""Bumblebee" is basically the movie that fans of the 1980s animated series wanted all along."

Thank you.

People will blame Bay, undeserved

They absolutely should blame Bay, and Paramount. They ran the series into the ground and an actual Transformers 6 wouldn't have done any better.

A little perspective, please.

1 Transformers: Dark of the Moon P/DW $1,123.8 $352.4 31.4% $771.4 68.6% 2011
2 Transformers: Age of Extinction Par. $1,104.1 $245.4 22.2% $858.6 77.8% 2014

5 Transformers: The Last Knight Par. $605.4 $130.2 21.5% $475.3 78.5% 2017

There wouldn't be a Bumblebee or possibly any Transformer movie any time soon without the success of Bay movies.

I think it will do well. Budget is apparently much lower than Bayformers.

Bay is quite good at putting a lot on the screen by dollars and rely very little on CGI, this is probably still quite expensive, they spent a bit over 100m below the line in California.

Each of the 3 lastest TF Bay films had enough action for 3 "normal" blockbusters, that s how huge Bay films are in terms of spectacle.

And he was the guy pushing the envelope as far as spectacle goes.

Cameron was not there so Bay was leading the charge.

TF  in 2007 was a huge film for its time one of the most spectacular one for sure and it costs only 150m.

Pirates 2&3 had  huge spectacle and set pieces but they are some of the most expensive films in film history.

Bay forced the other studios and producers to have huge set pieces to compete with him because he sets the standard.

MCU managed to reach Bay s epicness only with Avengers and onward.

My point is that they ran that success into the ground. Paramount wouldn’t be canning TF6 and openly talking about rebooting the whole thing after this one if it weren’t for the last one on that list.

Bay absolutely deserves all the credit for the success but he and Paramount also deserve the blame for the state the series is now in.

Idk how at this point one could reasonably defend Bay after the series of declining returns since Revenge of The Fallen that has only gotten worse and worse with each movie.

The series was rejuvenated with Age of Extinction after the low point of Dark of the Moon

I think there was a point where his singular style as well as Shia LaBeouf's presence was a legit draw for the franchise. Even though critics hated his movies, they were bad in spectacular and memetic ways that could still be mocked for entertainment value. The last two movies were just bad in boring ways, and there's a shorter shelf life for a commitment to poor quality.

He deserves credit for making Transformers a blockbuster franchise, but it still needed to be handed off to someone else to stay viable.
