Benedict Cumberbatch is set to join The Weinstein Company’s THE CURRENT WAR. The biopic, penned by The Giver writer Michael Mitnick, was featured on the 2012 HIT LIST and 2011 Black List before being set up with The Weinstein Co. in 2012. Cumberbatch is set to portray famed inventor Thomas Edison in the pic, which chronicles the true story behind the direct/alternate current debate and follows the intense rivalry between inventors Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse as they battled to be the first to commercially implement a practical system of electricity.

Director Timur Bekmambetov will produce via his shingle Bazelevs Productions, along with Steven Zaillian and Garrett Basch producing under their Film Rites banner. Harvey Weinstein will also produce, while Julie Rapaport and Collin Creighton will oversee for The Weinstein Co. Ben Stiller and Bekmambetov were both previously attached to direct in different instances, with no director currently on board.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch are in talks to play George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison in the Weinstein Company’s “The Current War.”

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is in talks to direct the film written by Michael Mitnick.

The movie takes place in the late 1880s and revolves around power titans Edison and Westinghouse’s battle over the supply of electricity. Edison championed the use of a direct current for electric power distribution over an alternating current, which was backed by several European companies and Westinghouse Electric.

I'd rather see Benedict Cumberbatch play Nikola Tesla in a movie instead.

Since Tesla was working for Westinghouse, he might well show up in this movie, but not played by Cumerbatch. I just  hope they avoid the nonsense about Tesla .

The Weinstein Company (TWC), which was behind the multi-Oscar-nominated film Lion has added three additional films to their 2017 slate, according to a press release. ...The second is The Current War, which stars Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) as Thomas Edison and Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) as George Westinghouse. The film will open on December 22, 2017

The Current War is described as, “the story of two powerful moguls battling over the supply of electricity in the late 1880s. Edison is on the verge of creating a marketable and sustainable electricity system for the first time in history, when Westinghouse notices a grand weakness in Edison’s design and ignites a war of currents between these two rivals.” The film will be directed by Alfonso Gomez‐Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and also stars Katherine Waterston, Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland, Matthew Macfayden and Tuppence Middleton.
