So am I right in guessing that this tops out at about $250 - $275 pre-China release? Or is there some market like South Korea that's really going to boost it? Its totals seem a little soft to be honest.

China and Japan will likely give it another 200m which would lift its OS to Gravity's or beyond.  Anything but soft.

Assuming Japan does $20 - $30 mil, do you really think China will pull in $170 - $180 mil? The year has been phenomenal thus far so I guess anything's possible.

Outside of China and North America, Gravity did $378 mil and Interstellar did $365. The Martian is trending $100 mil lower. That's what I was calling soft.

Still early going though. I'll be happy to eat my words.

As it did in the U.S., Fox’s The Martian returned to the No. 1 spot internationally this frame with $30.2M from 9,198 screens in 72 markets. That takes it past $200M at the offshore box office after four weekends in release with $218.77M.France launched at No. 1 with $6.7M, besting the starts of Interstellar (+40%) and helmer Ridley Scott’s own Prometheus (+10%). France was the only new play this week while holdovers clearly continued to engage. Koreagrossed another $4.4M dropping just 33% and bringing the cume to $27.8M for Fox’s 4th biggest earner in the market ever. The UK added $2.6M for a 28% drop and a cume of $31.2M. Australia is also a very strong hold at No. 1 after four straight weeks with a cume of $15M. In the competitive German and Spanish markets, Matt Damon’s Mark Watney has grown $11.8M and $6.6M, respectively over three and two frames’ worth of sols. The Martian has confirmed its China date on November 25 and will then travel to Japan on February 5.

Is there a reason this movie will be so big in China?

As others pointed out earlier, it's hoped a sub-plot in the movie involving China will increase its take there. It doesn't have a lot screen time but is presented positively. And really, is $100 million in China that big a prediction anymore? Any major action flick with sufficient marketing has a shot now.

What I'm curious about is how well The Martian has been presented as a straight up action flick in non-Western markets, which has a lot of bearing on China. At the risk of presenting the Chinese audience as unsophisticated, what they seem to like about Hollywood is mindless action like Transformers. It's been other elements -- the ensemble, the science, a bit of campiness -- that has appealed to North Americans with The Martian.

The Japanese audience seems to be the polar opposite in their tastes compared to China so is interesting for reverse reasons. Gravity did an excellent $30 million in Japan.

The Martian scored an additional $9.3 million from 50 overseas markets, raising its cume to $261.4 million overseas and $458.5 million worldwide. France retained its top spot this weekend with $2.5 million for a $16.4 million cume. The Martian will touch down in China on November 25 and in Japan sometime in February.
