Already posted here?

In the WE thread, but not here yet.

This combined with the stronger than originally estimated Fri makes it look like Aladdin might be finding an audience.  Let's see if this holds over the coming days.

Aladdin was great.

I appreciated the longer takes. And some Guy Ritchie sprinkled throughout.

Naomi scott is a superstar and is the best part of this film. Will Smith is fantastic.

I hope it has legs, and I hope people get out and see it.

My showing went from 1/3rd full to sold out tonight in a few hours, so I’m hopeful that maybe WOM will carry it.

If you want a fun film that entertains and somehow finds a way to make Jam hilarious, then go see it. It’s worth it.

EXACLTY LOL. I didn’t fell for that one.

And I feel really stupid for seeing this.

I'm glad you said something, 'cause I was falling into "the trap" and thinking about seeing it.

Then I breezed through the new soundtrack again (the vocal parts are bad, and so is generic, forgettable "Speechless") and knew that I would be having huge remorse if I contributed to it's theater run. "It's better than I thought" isn't doesn't qualify. This isn't a decent or good remake of a decent or bad movie - it's a remake of one the best animated films of all time, and my favorite animated film of all time, and a half-ass, cash grab effort just will not cut it for me.

You are totally out of your mind, man. Like: maniacal.

Here, let me try to explain it to you:

1. Suppose your life ends in some 50 years.

2. And then you find out you may be reborn and live another life - you just need to wish for it.

3. But then your stubborn ass says: LOL, no, I don't want another life if it is not exactly the same or better than the one I already had.

4. And so you stay dead - and it is all over. Eternal nothingness.

5. While all the other, sane people get to live again and have fun again.

That is your case.

Yeah, we enjoyed this a lot. Best remake since Cinderella (didn't bother with JB for talking animals are not my thing so couldn't compare). Naomi/Jasmine is the MVP but the main trio overall was great. lol jafar made the already fun movie unintentionaly funnier.

Quoting myself from the weekend thread:

Quote

Saw Aladdin last night.

I would call it an improvement over BATB, and as a remake, it could've been worse. But it's still a far cry from either Cinderella or The Jungle Book, and hardly what I'd call a good movie overall.

Pros:

+ Naomi Scott is really good as Jasmine. She captures the original character's spirit while also adding her some weight - including her ambitious of becoming a good kingdom ruler, which is actually interesting and a good layer to the character - and has a very nice singing voice. I liked her a lot, she was the one character who actually got an upgrade compared to the 1992 classic. And I hope she gets benefitted by this role, whitewashing controversy notwithstanding.

+ On that note, they try a couple of extra layers to the story that I actually like, even if they are more nitpicky pros than anything. But yeah, if you're doing a remake to something that was already great to begin with, trying to fix little problems is trying something good to begin with and I'm more than okay with the layers they added. Not something BATB did very well, apart from a much more interesting exploration of Belle's relationship with her father.

+ Will Smith as the Genie, while not exactly anywhere near as good as Robin Williams, isn't really trying to be either and that's fine. He goes off and does his own thing. And while his own thing is sometimes bogged down by awkward jokes and bad CGI (yeah, Blue Willie is just as bad in the movie as it is in the trailer), he still brings his charm and his smoothness to the role in a way that stands out just fine. A charismatic, charming new take on something that was always going to be hard to top. Fine, I guess.

+ Mena Messoud was good casting, both look and acting-wise, for the main part. I found it cool that he brought Aladdin's awkwardly smart charms to life solidly. He was in no way better or more charismatic and likeable than the animated character, but at least he didn't bother me either (unlike Emma Watson did when she played Belle in the blandest, most uncharismatic way possible; and this is coming from someone who likes her as an actress).

+ The end credits are fun. Yup, the end credits. That's a pro here.

+ And song-wise, this is a million times better than BATB was. Even though I really only liked two songs, those being the songs that I sung the praises of in the Aladdin thread: Speechless, which is basically this movie's version of Evermore but way more impactful and less forgettable; and Friend Like Me, which is done in a really fun way that, similarly to the Genie, homages the original version without killing its charm and does its own thing without crossing the line. Prince Ali sounds a little better in the movie than just on audio too, but that's because the instrumental part - at least at the beginning - is actually quite bold and strong, and one could argue an improvement over the orchestration of the original song...... but then Willie starts singing it and it's just a much blander version of the same song. Which is a perfect segway for....

Cons:

- Narratively, this tries to swap the order of some reveals and things that happen. It's fine that you're trying that with a remake, bbbbbbut it was short-sighted here. Because the changes done to the story degrade it rather than improve it. They're done basically for the effect of keeping surprises closer to heart, but at the same time, it really takes away some of the weight that the original version had when it tried the same scenes. I didn't like them.

- Jafar. WOOOF. I'll give them credit as one of those extra layers I mentioned as pros was related to Jafar, but my God, was he a bland, uncharismatic, uninteresting, boring ass, horribly casted villain with absolutely no charm whatsoever. Give me Luke Evans' Gaston over this piece of shit anyday of the week, and that's saying something, since Luke Evans' Gaston was the blandest version of that character that Disney could've possibly come up with.

- The script. The movie is trying to be comedy, and it's not a very funny one. The characterizations are basically the same as the original film with a few extra things, and the extra things are cool, but again, apart from the characters that I mentioned up top, no one is really given much of interesting to be or do at all. And the story itself is compacted in a bizarre way, which is extra weird since the movie is basically half an hour longer than the original.

- The CGI. It looked terrible. On the Genie, on Iago, on Abu, on the Cave of Wonders...... it looked just bad all over the place. Maybe not BATB bad (holy crap, that was some nightmarish CG work on that movie), but certainly bad.

- The technical design of the film. BATB suffered a little bit from somewhat desaturated color schemes, but it still mostly resembled the 1991 classic, and one of the praise-worthy aspects of that remake was the fact that it actually got the set and costume design correctly. And while it looked very much identical to the animated version, I feel like getting those technical elements right in live-action stands out more, since animation will always have the advantage of being more luscious and eye-popping than reality. The vividness of the set and costume design of BATB, therefore, was one of that movie's few bright lights. Here, in Aladdin, the movie looks more like a porn parody of Aladdin rather than an actually believable take on Agrabah and its citizens. The sets look like fake movie sets, the costume design is kinda awkward and even ugly in a lot of ways, the movie looks painfully desaturated and the colors do not pop out at all, with the exception of a few scenes. An Aladdin remake with no colors is like a Jaws remake with no sharks: the soul of the movie is gone right there.

- The majority of the songs. Again, it never gets to the lows of BATB, but it's basically just a blander, uncharming and padded version of the original soundtrack. There are points in which I'm like: "wow, the instrumentals might even be a little cooler and bolder than the ones from 1992" and then the song loses me from the moment the lyrics begin (I mentioned Prince Ali as the prime example of this). Friend Like Me and Speechless being the exceptions all the way through, and only the former is a remade song from the original anyway.

- And on the Prince Ali note, the spectacle of the movie is completely dwarfed by the 1992 movie. This is a Guy Ritchiemovie, and the things you assume a Guy Ritchie movie will do well - the visual style, and the action - are actually really bland and downplayed compared to the original. The Cave of Wonders stuff is just the exact same scene as in the original. Prince Ali is nothing like the animated version, and that's just not on the singing. A Whole New World - both the song and the scene itself - despite having good singing by the actors, is also booooooooooooooring, lyrically awkward compared to the song's pace, and.... feels so nothing next to how energic, romantic and powerful the original version was. But the biggest culprit of this is the third act/climax. Do you remember the incredible spectacle of the third act of Aladdin, with Jafar becoming an unstoppable sorcerer, turning into a giant snake, swords rain from above, all of Aladdin's friends are reduced to metaphorical rubble, Jasmine trapped in a giant hourglass, the dark red sky with lightning coming from above matching perfectly with the gold and orange tones of the Palace and the brutality and emergency of the situation? Aladdin literally surfing a giant diamond as he dodged Snakafar's bites and stabbed him in his back? The Genie cheering on Al for the brief moments of comic relief? And the ultimate twist of fate, with Jafar's own power greed becoming his ultimate downfall as he turns into a genie himself and gets trapped in a lamp as a consequence? Do you remember all of that??? Well, prepare to be incredibly disappointed by how terrible this is by comparison.

So yeah. I think it's better than BATB, because it brings more improvements + charmingly unique takes on what was done before, as well as it has much better casting (and I like the BATB cast a lot..... on paper, because the casting for the characters themselves was mostly poor), much better songs, and is just more investing overall. The movie takes less charm out of the original than BATB did. BATB has the technical advantage, and that's it. I guess it's slightly more narratively cohesive too since it stays far closer to the original's structure, but I will still say that Aladdin's narrative changes - even the ones that didn't quite work - were at least attempts at differentiation that still mostly knew to stay within the line of reason, unlike the Alice and Maleficent way of just crossing that line into becoming different things altogether. That being said, I still don't think it's a good movie, and as a remake, it's mediocre and I would still handily recommend the original over it. But it was a lot better than I thought it would be...... so, yay? I guess?

  1. The Jungle Book
  2. Cinderella
  3. Aladdin
  4. Beauty And The Beast
  5. Alice In Wonderland
  6. Maleficent

(haven't seen Dumbo yet)

Going to see this with the family at 1:00 pm. I would LOVE for this to beat Pets 2. I think my daughter wants to see Pets 2 too. Snore! I will probably fall asleep. At least she wants to see TS4 also. But no LK. She's dreadfully scared of Scar (even on Disney Junior).

My brother took his son last night. He said it was pretty awful and my nephew just said he liked the animated version a lot better.  So, I guess that leaves me thinking I should just watch the original and save my money.

Does anyone have a ranking for the Disney villains in the live action remakes that were released between 1996 (with 101 Dalmatians) to today (with most recently: Aladdin)? From most best to least best.

I’m surprised we haven’t made a list for the villains in their live action counterparts. Here are the ones so far and those who played them:

Cruella DeVil (Glenn Close)

Iracebeth ”The Red Queen/Queen of Hearts” (Helena Bonham Carter)

Maleficent (Angelina Jolie)

Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett)

Shere Khan (Idris Elba)

Gaston (Luke Evans)

Jafar (Marvan Kenzari)

What the....?

Is this another case of critics getting influenced by the bad buzz prior to a movie's release?

What? No, half of them are just officially idiots. Have you tried reading their "reviews"? They can barely form a coherent thought - and, much worse, they are full of all kinds of inferiority complexes so they snidely attack the movies to feel better about themselves.

With big movies, like most Marvel, the little slimy cowards don't dare oppose the others and are forced to stay in the pack. Also - the herd mentality is very strong with such basic creatures. But any sign of blood in the water (and often they try to create these "controversies" on purpose, out of nothing) - and the keyboard Nazis are out in full force, to prove that they are better than something else, and that they matter, and that they can hurt a movie. All a bunch of delusional lies - but hey, these are why they do what they do in the first place, so they can't just change that.

So yeah, they ARE influenced. But those subject to influence can not be called critics. :)

Excellent write-up. Even more of a justification in my steadfastness to not ruin my love for the original by seeing this watered down version. Every time I watch the animated "Beauty and the Beast" (twice since seeing the remake) I can't help but think of they got so much wrong in remade version and it really saddens me I can't enjoy the movie as much as I used to because of that.
