Respect | August 13 2021 | Aretha Franklin biopic | Jennifer Hudson to star

Recommended Posts

Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar for her role in Dreamgirls, is set to once again take center stage as iconic singer Aretha Franklin in a biopic chronicling the famed musician’s rise to fame. The pic, which is currently untitled, will see Hudson portraying Franklin in her transition from gospel singer to mainstream artist in the early sixties to mid-seventies.

The film will also explore the Queen of Soul’s interpersonal relationships, most notably how her abusive husband and autocratic father helped inspire and shape her epochal music during that time. Universal Pictures executive and prolific producer Scott Bernstein is spearheading the project, having acquired Franklin’s life rights.

While we're at it, let's do a Run DMC biopic.  How about Mase and p-diddy.  Maybe Public Enemy.

After those, we can get to LL Cool J, Eric B and Rakim entitled Paid ion Full.  Maybe then we can do Digiital Underground, Biz Marquee and any other black group from the 80's and 90's.

Awesome! During the whole Dreamgirls frenzy, Hudson was supposedly going to play Aretha in a stage musical, and I always hoped that it would be a big screen endeavor instead. After a while, the project went nowhere, and Hudson's film career also seemed to go nowhere, so I hope that this turns out to be a good film that helps Hudson, who I think is an extraordinary talent, regain some of the luster that she had right after her Oscar win.

My dream cast would also include Angela Bassett and Keke Palmer!

Yep it is. Also Mary J. Blige and Marc Maron are in this too. Shaping up to be a promising project.

Odd release date for a film like this, isn't it?

It's the same spot where movies like The Help, Lee Daniels' The Butler, Straight Outta Compton, and Crazy Rich Asians all made huge amounts of cash. If this delivers, expect it to do very well.
