It has. We were really thin on films this trimester (we only had about 1-2 films on each weekend) but I think since we are getting into the summer season next trimester, you can bet that the number will most likely 2-3 films per date.

Monster Hunter's drop is fairly understandable coming after a holiday and I suspect it'll stabilize pretty easily. Run & Gun 2, on the other hand, I was expecting to hold up better in Weeks 2/3 considering the lack of action blockbuster competition. Oh well, when all's said and done, it's still almost certain to pass $150m and may have an shot at reaching $170m.

Looking at August I'm once again really regretting not throwing in some extra fillers in there. Boy was that a weak month. And that's even with it performing largely to expectations. Anyway, thanks again to Numbers for doing the.... numbers. Here are a few general thoughts on stuff.

 

Pleasantly surprised at PMD's legs. Maybe it's because of Numbers's constant painstaking reminders that the Pokemon franchise is frontloaded, but I was expecting the drops to be a lot harsher. As it is, it's fairly likely to pass $200 and I suspect will be the Number 2 of the summer after Monster Hunter (although it may be a tight race with Throne of Fire). It's probably not going to pass E.S.P, but it's still excellent news moving forward for that trilogy. At the moment, I'm interested to see if I can get 3 for 3 with my animations this years, since I've got my Traditional Animation, Giants of Asambhava, coming out this fall. And considering my last trad animation swept the Oscars and won Best Picture, I'd say it should be very interesting to see it perform against E.S.P (especially since, to date, my trad animation of the year has always come off ahead critically and financially against my CG animation)

 

Speaking of Throne of Fire, I guess that film's probably the more unexpected success of the summer. I'll admit, coming a year after a lukewarm and to some extent controversial 1st film (which I still don't think it should've been made), I didn't see it doing as well as it did. I guess being a more straightforward blockbuster in a summer lacking in them paid off. 

 

As for my other films, Monster Hunter performed largely as expected. Maybe a little less leggy than I was expecting, but it's still taking the Summer Crown by a comfortable amount. It doesn't quite look like it's going to pass $250m, but I've got my fingers crossed. Dresden Files also performed very admirably. It looks like it's probably scratch past $200m as well. Honestly, it's fairly difficult to get disappointed at a tri where all of my movies have a $60m+ OW and 3 of them have a good chance of crossing $200m dom (and R&G2 looks like it came fairly close).

 

Still, there weren't many big exciting breakouts this summer. We certainly had a lot of mid-level hits, but not even Monster Hunter was that big of a smash. I suppose they're all being saved for the fall. I know I've got Giants of Asambhava, Scar (possibly) and a certain surprise movie I'm announcing at Comic Con, all which I expect to be big players. I know other people have a lot of planned movies as well. And let's not forget Numbers's Star Wars which is probably going to win the year barring a surprise upset. Still, we've yet to see whether of that will actually be finished (since I know this isn't the first time an 'overcrowded' fall/winter has a fair number of dropouts) and how it will perform. I guess Numbers is going to enjoy himself.

I'm not all that concerned with making a huge blockbuster for the fall season. I've been concerned with more smaller projects (besides maybe The Thief and the Cobbler). I could care less if they were big successes (though it would be nice if they were) or not, I just want to hear the feedback you guys give. That's what I'll be concerned with most this trimester.

Also, Scar Dom > Star Wars Dom. Just saying
