Universal Pictures International Sets Industry Record With $3.78B At Offshore Box Office

After setting records for the fastest climb to $1B, then $2B and then $3B at theinternational box office, it was just a matter of time before Universal Pictures International set yet another benchmark. With recent titles like Minions and Jurassic World still making waves overseas, and with last week’s receipts factored in, Universal Pictures International has grossed $3.78B in offshore box office. That is an industry record for the highest-grossing year ever, overtaking the $3.73B record previously set by 20th Century Fox’s 2014 year-end international haul.

Dunanc Clark, UPI president of distribution shared the news today saying, “There are countless people who contribute to this level of success. First and foremost our studio executive ranks, led by Jeff Shell and Donna Langley, then of course our filmmakers and talent. This record-breaking milestone is also a testament to the tireless work of those invaluable team members at our head offices in Los Angeles and London as well as those in our operating companies, joint ventures and local distributors around the world. With nine titles on our main slate still awaiting release, we are excited at what the remainder of the year has to offer.”

Overseas highlights of 2015 so far include four of the Top Five highest-grossing films of the year: No. 1 Fast & Furious 7 ($1.162B), No. 2 Jurassic World ($983.5M), No. 4Minions ($670.2M) and No. 5 Fifty Shades Of Grey ($404.1M).

Universal has had four No. 1 worldwide openings, and has been No. 1 at the international box office for 10 weeks, more than any other studio.

Jurassic World had the biggest opening weekend of all time internationally, domestically and worldwide, debuting at No. 1 in 69 territories. It was the fastest film to reach $1B worldwide after only 13 days and is currently the 3rd-highest-grossing film worldwide ever, behind only Avatar and Titanic.

Furious 7, which was released as Fast & Furious 7 abroad, is the highest-grossing film ever in China ($391.2M) and became the 3rd film in history to cross $1B at the international box office, making Universal only the second studio ever to achieve the milestone.

Can't believe cmaster's prediction for Universal came to fruition, lol. Universal is smashing everything. Disney has one more trick up its sleeve though. We'll see if it can even come close to the world dominance of Universal this year.
