Summer holidays are pretty overrated in general, I think. People would rather use them for going outdoors somewhere

The 4th of July is a lie, IMO. Movies never do very well on that weekend.

Universal was so smart with DM2 and Minions release. They had virtually no post release competition and were able to have incredible theater holds. If you look at Minions 7th and 8th weekends, it's theater counts were 1,000 more than IO 7th and 8th weekends despite IO having higherer weekend gross and theater averages than Minions. Minions has had no competition whatsoever to take away any of its theaters and still has 2,000 theaters in its 9th weekend. Universal has done everything correct with this franchise, except the fact that Minions could have been better. Doesn't seem to have had any effect however, domestically in large part to lack of any competition whatsoever.

Some studio still needs to have the balls to put something big here. The others all had 90M+ openers in them.

One of these days a studio will be brave enough to put a decent movie on that weekend and when that movie grosses $50m opening weekend then we'll see some musical chairs.

In admissions, the biggest 3-day weekend to fall on or around the 4th of July is actually 2013 (where the 4th was on the preceding Thursday) followed by 1996 (where the 4th also fell on Thursday). 2013 top 12 was $237.2m adj., 1996 was $229.7m adj.

The biggest weekend where the 4th was part of the weekend was 2004 (4th on Sunday, top 12 $214m adj.) followed by 1997 (4th on Friday, top 12 $211.1m adj.).

4th of July has only six years where a Fri-Sun top 12 adjusts to over $200m - the other two were 2002 and 2011.

Considering that mid to late September has seen $30-40m OW openers like The Equalizer, HT, Maze Runner etc it would be interesting to see a studio take a punt on Labor Day weekend. Perhaps WB could move up Storks or Sony with The Magnificent Seven next year to Labor Day weekend

October has no holidays apart but yet it's slowly become a popular month for adult dramas and things like The Martian.

It has an holiday and I am not sure why it doesn't show up as a 4 day weekend like the others. I don't remember the name but check Alexander and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day first Monday. That is where the holiday lands. Drops are as low as in MLK weekend or President's Weekend's respective Mondays.

I think it's either Canadian Thanksgiving or Veterans Day

It's Canadian Thanksgiving, and Columbus Day in the U.S. - though the latter isn't really observed that much these days, for reasons you can probably guess, the U.S. side probably does still contribute some to its holiday Monday status. (Up to 1995, it was actually tracked as a 4-day weekend.)

Hey when do you guys think SOC will pass Mad Max and San Andreas? It's getting close! I'm shocked by the success of this movie. BTW, I love MMFR tied with SOC as my top 2 movies of year so far.

I'm projecting it to happen sometime next weekend.

The 4th of July is a lie, IMO. Movies never do very well on that weekend.

But that's simply not true, it's usually one of the biggest weeks of the year.

2013 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekly/chart/?yr=2013&wk=26&p=.htm

2012 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekly/chart/?yr=2012&wk=26&p=.htm

2010 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekly/chart/?yr=2010&wk=27&p=.htm

2007 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekly/chart/?yr=2007&wk=26&p=.htm

2004 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekly/chart/?yr=2004&wk=27&p=.htm

Lots of tickets sold in those weeks.

Agreed, at least lately. Memorial Day & July 4th weekends have gotten smaller. Then again, President's Day and Valentine's have gotten bigger.

And it was only two years ago that Memorial Day looked like this:
