how’s the tone of the movie? Is it closer to the seriousness of 2014? Or is it more lighthearted fun like Kong: Skull Island and KOTM?

Less than two hours doesn't means it's super short, Kong Skull Island was 118 minutes so it can be done. I reckon it's probably around 110-115 minutes.

If anything, the biggest problem with KOTM was that it didn't have enough fun with itself. All the human shit was so serious.

Interesting that you say that, since there have been people who argued that the movie’s attempts at comic relief were forced.

Indeed, everything to do with the monsters themselves is played dead serious, and by far the best parts of the film. If anything it felt like they thought it was too grim and felt obligated to throw in some blockbuster humour. Making it even more obvious is literally all the comedy of the film comes from just two side characters, their only purpose is to do jokes. If you cut them out you'd lose nothing plotwise.

 

Godzilla 14 was played very seriously, I can't recall a single joke in the whole film actually. Then again most Godzilla films are serious, even when cheesy, it's the 60s-70s period that put the idea of purely wacky Godzilla in popular memory, as well as the goofball dubs they all got.

Moving this to 2021 would be absolutely insane, considering how long ago it finished filming. Jesus Christ, these coronavirus concerns are really screwing over the film industry.

I think if it's between GvK and Dune to keep in December, I'd go for Dune.

This movie has felt doomed ever since King of the Monsters underperformed but yeah, I bet this moves to 2021.

Dune is too inaccessible to audiences.

People thought Sonic and Bad Boys For Life were gonna flop and that BOP was gonna succeed. This might be another one of those cases.
 

KOTM may have underperformed but this movie has a bigger hook and only 3 recurring characters, so if they won’t market it as a direct sequel it is safe.
