King Kong is arguably a bigger global phenomenon than Godzilla, so it remains to be seen if the novelty of him fighting the Big G would help this movie in anyway. In any case, I’m not expecting this movie to do huge business.

Hell, King Kong in 1933 started the whole "Giant Monster" genre.

No Kong, No Godzilla.

Based on a picture floating around, the plot of GvK may have leaked and it sounds absolutely stupid

Its a skyscraper-sized radioactive lizard fighting a skyscraper-sized Ape.

That in itself is so stupid that anything else becomes tolerable in my eyes (though some people know that im not the most objective person regarding this franchise lol).

In short don't pay much attention to early reactions.

BOP and Godzilla 2 are the recent example from WB which were hailed as masterpiece after the early reaction. In the end both underperformed/flopped.

BoP got good reviews. Not sure what box office has to do with how screening reactions went 🤦‍♂️

In the end these movies are for box office.

Beside, BOP reviews are average just like Captain Marvel. Nothing extraordinary.

I do believe that the central conceit of Godzilla Vs Kong is enough to drive up audience interest. Not by a significant factor, but by a noticeable one. It's easily a better hook than Godzilla vs a bunch of monsters.

That said, the marketing campaign needs to be on point. Similar to G14, which emphasized the chaos surrounding Godzilla much more than Godzilla himself, told through the eyes of a single character's emotional investment. We all remember that Bryan Cranston and his incredible monologuing was the big marketing hook.

KotM's marketing was just focused on action and destruction. Filled the trailers with the film's best money shots, left little to surprise. There was nothing to emotionally invest in as an audience, unless you really cared about Millie Bobby Brown for some reason. From what I can tell, Alexander Skarsgård is the primary human this time. The marketing for this really needs to put us in his shoes as he witnesses chaos unfolding around him.

Kong also did good because of the cast.

Samuel L Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, John C Riley and Brie Larson won the Oscar last year and was cast as Captain Marvel.

Human cast is as important as Monsters.

MBB is new talent she has done nothing remarkable expect being Eleven.
