In a movie move that portends a clash of giant monsters, Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull is moving his untitled Skull Island King Kong film to Warner Bros.

This is being done to unite the property with Legendary’s other giant franchise,
Godzilla. In what would be a pretty epic pairing, the Godzilla sequel that is in the works will be followed by a movie that pits the giant ape versus the giant fire breathing reptile.

I’m told this is happening very quickly with moves going all the way to Japan, where Godzilla rights holder Toho is based. Legendary, which moved from Warner Bros to Universal, had developed the
Skull Island film at the latter studio. It is unclear at the moment what Universal’s position will be, but I heard the studio move is being done because it is just easier to have all the pieces under one roof, something that Marvel Studios has done with superheroes like The Hulk. King Kongis in the public domain, while Legendary got the Godzilla rights from Toho.

This movie would be a tad one-sided unless SKULL ISLAND's Kong is 20x the size he has previously been portrayed as...

I told people this would happen in the Skull Island thread a while ago and I was told this had no chance of happening.

If Godzilla alone can pull in $200m and hoping Skull Island can do the same, this could do $450m+.

Godzilla was 350 feet tall in that movie, so they'll have to REALLY change the size of King Kong in Skull Island or this will be laughable.

Of course they'll adjust Kongs size for this......

I wonder if this will be in the same world as Edwards Godzilla trilogy or if this is a standalone BONUS Godzilla film not related to anything. Or if maybe not Edwards but Skull Island(Kind of like Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman are in the same world but not Nolans trilogy).

Tohos been wanting this for a LONG time... just not with Universal. Switching over King Kong to Warner Brothers was probably the only way Toho okd this

Following Legendary’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2014 success with the global reinvention of the Godzilla franchise, the companies have come together to create an epic, new shared cinematic franchise. All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.

The announcement that the reinvention of monsters continues was made today by Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull, and Kevin Tsujihara, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. The initial trio of films are 2017’s KONG: SKULL ISLAND; GODZILLA 2 in 2018; and then GODZILLA VS. KONG, arriving in theaters in 2020. While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the GODZILLA films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute KONG as a part of this franchise. Production on KONG: SKULL ISLAND begins October 19th.

Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla in May 2014 with an agreement to release Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018. Both films feature the human Monarch organization. Shortly following Legendary’s pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho’s Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures.

Tull is an idiot. Once both Godzilla 2 and Skull Island underperform then maybe they'll call this shit show off.

I went to the closest IMAX theater yesterday to see The Walk and asked if I could buy tickets for this. Unfortunately it is not possible yet.

The actual title is GODZILLA vs. KONG

While KONG: SKULL ISLAND and GODZILLA 2 will probably make similar numbers as Gareth Edward's GODZILLA from 2014, GODZILLA vs. KONG should easily make a extra 100-300m globally. There is plenty of hype for the film.

I want to be excited for this. I really do. But unless Godzilla 2 and Skull Island are MILES better than the incompetent 2014 film, I'll "see it if I have time".

I am expecting 150M for both the individual movies coming next and a small increase from Godzilla for this one.

This will be the quickest fight ever if you throw logic into this.. No way KONG survives GODZILLA'S Fire breathing blast of radiation.. It'll look like this fight in how quick it will end: Just Substitute GINO for KONG:

I'm expecting 72/155 for Godzilla 2

81/210 for Skull Island

102/239 for this.

Hoping Godzilla 2 is a littler closer to the 200m. G2 and K:SI should easily hit 500m worldwide. GvsKK should hit 600+m worldwide.

Honestly, Godzilla vs Kong doesn't look like a mismatch at all when you consider the fact that Godzilla's been given a hard time by:

Mothra, a giant moth.

Ebirah, a lobster.

Kumonga, a spider.

And Mothra's larvae.
