The question is whether he's been asking for big budgets and getting denied, or whether he's just using sensible budgets for his projects. He's a really savvy filmmaker and knows exactly how to maximize his VFX and shoot efficiently, so it's not like he's been really cramped with his last two movies.

On that note, Ridley is the same way. The Martian could have cost a lot more than 108m. Veteran filmmakers seem to be much better with budgets (which makes sense).

Yeah, but aside from Beowulf, I don't think any of his mo-cap films were substantial money losers. It wouldn't surprise me at all if people in Hollywood think he directed Mars Attack, when he really didn't, he was just spearheading it.

I mean, Scott's made plenty of bombs, even a few in a row, yet Hollywood has no problem giving him money. Jeez! Maybe Zemeckis was able to make the film for a smaller budget, I dunna. I'm assuming it was the second of those.

I suspect it's the latter, The Martian needed a big budget whereas The Walk aside from the walk itself is small scale so didn't require a huge budget. I imagine if there is a big budget project that Zemeckis is interested in doing, I'm sure he'd do it but does seem to concentrating on mid budget films at the moment.

I'm surprised The Martian only cost $108m even with big salaries for Damon, Scott and a decent salary for Chastain. I guess filming in Hungary and Jordan saved a ton of money plus I imagine they got tax breaks.

Zemeckis put his mo-cap knowledge to work as well. He shot a mo-cap session with the real Phillipe and used that data for digital stunt shots.

Probably a good thing, although I imagine that upcoming Pitt World War 2 romance, will probably have a 80m+ budget or something.

Since I hadn't seen anything since Phoenix and Mistress America on Labor Day weekend, I went crazy this weekend and saw FOUR flicks. Sicario and The Walk in IMAX 3D on Friday, The Martian and 99 Homes yesterday. I'm riding a nice movie high since I really liked all four. Wouldn't label any as a classic, but I'd recommend all of them. On the box office, I was wrong about Martian seriously challenging Gravity. I don't think Martian is anywhere near the movie Gravity is but it deserves its success. Feel bad for The Walk. As others have pointed out, it's certainly not perfect, but I wish it made more.

The Martian had a 42% 3D share. Saturday estimate is now 22.27M and Fox have given it a pretty realistic 34% Sunday drop.

The lack of IMAX may end up being the difference between getting the October OW record or not.

I don't care how much Gravity made, this alone will make it the more impressive run.

Unless The Martian makes 44M second weekend with a 12% drop, Gravity will still have the more impressive run.

Scary Movie 3 sold more OW tickets in October than either Martian or Gravity if that is what you are implying toward.

It's more of less the 3D share. Chances are The Martian ends up in the 200M range so the gap could be only about 30-50M.

HT2 has pretty much no similar competition unless Goosebumps breaks out. OS it has a much easier time as it's only Pan and in limited markets Goosebumps it had to face, the first film faced two animated films OS with Madagascar 3 and Frankenweenie, it will see a big increase OS. It might end up being SPA's highest grossing film in the US, it'll be tough to beat The Smurfs OS total

Goosebumps is probably gonna make 50-55m, Pan around the same as well.I dont see either breaking out, or hurting HT2.

Zemeckis put his mo-cap knowledge to work as well. He shot a mo-cap session with the real Phillipe and used that data for digital stunt shots.

Even if the mo-cap films weren't financial power-houses, they did allow Zemeckis to assemble a technical toolkit unlike anyone else in Hollywood.

Just waiting for him to team up with Andy Serkis on something.
