"Two things, okay? Shut. Up."

Released: 2001

Director: Andrew Adamson, Vicky Jenson

Revitalising a film genre, launching a new studio in to the stratosphere, changing perceptions and expectations from audiences of all ages, SHREK is a true icon of 21st Century film. It peels away the layers of our list to find its true self at #14.

"This is what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps"

Released: 1998

Director: Joel Coen

Could it be? The Coen Brothers made a well-received comedy? How such a lazy film can get to #13 on this list is anyone's guess, but you know, that's just because of like like, your opinions and votes, man.

"You want to find an outlaw, hire an outlaw. You want to find a Dunkin Donuts, call a cop."

Released: 1987

Director: Joel Coen

This time, the Coens' very first comedy film - and one of Nic Cage's first performances (widely cited as his best, too). RAISING ARIZONA steals #12.

Not in the top ten? Surely you can't be serious...

"Who ya gonna call?"

Released: 1984

Director: Ivan Reitman

There's little surprise to see this film on any comedy list, thanks to its popular appeal and unique aesthetic. GHOSTBUSTERS tears down our list to #10.

"I got a good mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it."

Released: 1933

Director: Leo McCarey

And now for the Marx Brothers. Undisputably their best movie, this is now one of the ultimate icons of comedy. DUCK SOUP is the #9 funniest film in Freedonia.

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Released: 1987

Director: Rob Reiner

Quotable, rewatchable, timeless. Fantasy romance is rarely a genre that works, but over thirty years, THE PRINCESS BRIDE has become a cult classic, and charmed its way up to the #8 spot in our list.

"Never give up. Never surrender."

Released: 1999

Director: Dean Parisot

I gotta be honest, I love GALAXY QUEST. It's great fun, it's full of heart and it is absolutely hysterical. I haven't seen much of Star Trek, but it's clear that everyone behind this movie has a genuine love for what they're parodying. But the best part of the film is the late Alan Rickman. He's a great comedic performer, something that people sometimes forget; and watching this film is a wonderful way to remember him. His character's cynicism and development arc is a great thing to behold, and he holds the key to this film's charm. Alan Rickman was an intelligent, funny, charismatic and inspirational performer, and he will be missed greatly.

By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Worvan, you shall be avenged.

Dumb-Dumber-9621-358.jpg

"According to the map, we've only gone four inches."

Released: 1994

Director: Farrelly Brothers

Now something a bit lighter... this buddy movie was a massive blockbuster hit upon release, and clearly has held up well enough to earn the respect of the Box Office Theory crowd. DUMB AND DUMBER is at #6, though how its characters found their way there is anyone's guess.

Dr.-Strangelove-Poster-2.jpg

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

Released: 1964

Director: God

Yes, Stanley Kubrick's politically satirical comedy made it here. One of the most influential comedy films of all time and Kubrick's only foray into comedy at all, DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB decides that it will indeed be #5 on our list.

"Yes! We're all individuals!"

Released: 1979

Director: Terry Jones

Monty Python has landed. The wise men of Box Office Theory followed my posts here and found the very naughty boy that is MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN. Controversial, endlessly quotable, and genuinely edgy, it's nailed in to the top of this list at #4.

"This is heavy."

Released: 1985

Director: Robert Zemeckis

This Fifty Funniest Films list is a curious thing. Some entries have made members weep; others have made members sing.

One thing's for sure, though, everyone loves BACK TO THE FUTURE. It's gone back to #3.
