UNDERWATER | Fox | 10 JAN 2020 | William Eubank to direct

LOL. this looks like a cheap Alien rip off with charisma vacuum in the lead. Sorry Kstew but no matter how short you cut your hair you won't pass for a badass cause you're just not the type. It would suck if it made more than Crawl (that actually has a great lead in Kaya Scodelario) but dead month is going to work in its advantage. Streaming material.

Damn....that looks great. Must be expensive film. Say what you want about fox, but they made some really good edgy Pg-13 and R rated movies in the last 10 years or so. Movies that Disney would struggle to market and probably bomb much worse.

Was on the cheaper side $65M (gross probably under $55M net)

With a budget like that, Underwater can be to Jan. 2020 what Glass was to Jan. 2019. People might want to see a thrilling film like that instead of the holiday holdovers or the Oscar bait. If Glass and The Upside, two films that didn't necessarily receive the best reviews, could gross $100M+ as January releases, then theoreticallyUnderwater could achieve the same. Of course, that might be easier said than done because Jan. 2020 looks unusually crowded--The Grudge (2020)Bad Boys for LifeThe Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen, just to name a few. But with that budget, I'm not too worried about the film, because the film can gross similarly to Elysium and get its costs covered by international ticket sales.

Well, Grudge is a big competition since it's the same genre and coming out a week earlier. Unless it bombs like Child's Play but Child's Play directly competed with Annabelle 3 (more popular evil doll).

I also don't get comparison between Glass and Underwater. Glass was part of the movie series (well, they came up with that on a fly but still) and came on the heels of a surprise hit Split and declared itself its sequel. Underwater is technically a brand new thing (that resembles Crawl).

Not sure about all those comp

Specially Glass being a sequel in a very popular franchise and put it in a complete different category, Elysium was a much bigger movie(125M net budget, follow up to District 9 phenomenon director, Damon, $97m WW P&A), Upside a Kevin Hart in a often proven high concept.

This is a upper echelon for low/lower echelon of mid budget adventure-horror-thriller with some star power assemble but not the first tier kind, the closest could be Gyllenhaal, Ferguson, Reynolds movie Life ? That was also horror-adventure-thriller type, not ideal release date, very similar budget range.

Yep and unless they expect KStew to blow up with Charlie's Angels like Reynolds did with Deadpool (before Life), this has way less star power than Life. Also 4 movies open on Jan 10 (including Underwater) plus Just Mercy goes wide. Crowded af.

I think another good comparison is Cloverfield. It also came out in January and did well. You don't know with Disney but the old 20th Century Fox would've been able to market a movie like this internationally.

I just googled Cloverfield. It was released in 2008, which means at the height of Lost hype. I bet they heavily advertised JJ's name. So not the same situation unless they expect KStew to blow up with CA and/or her Oscar hopeful. if that's the case than it's more comparable to that shelves JLaw horror that they released after THG to bank on her exposure.

This actually wrapped shooting in May 2017. I wouldn't expect much.

True but it is also true that it hasn't been business as usual at Fox movies for the past 12-18 months and practically every one of their release this year has either been sitting on shelf or has been pushed back at least once.
