With the summer season already begun and a lack of high-profile openers, this last weekend registered the lowest admission count of the year so far, with only 35,098 admissions. 'Doctor Strange 2' stayed in first place for a third weekend despite hemorrhaging profusely. It will definitely not beat 'The Batman', despite scoring a far bigger opening. 'My Beloved Smyrna' has returned with a shortened version (only two hours), which best serves the schedule of the outdoor cinemas that have opened for the summer season. Expect it to play throughout the summer, with a low but steady level of admissions. The best opener of the week was crime drama 'The Outfit', which was as disappointing as the re-expansion of 'My Beloved Smyrna'. 'The Protégé' changed its release date at the last minute to avoid last weeks cramped marketplace, but the change evidently did nothing to improve its box-office performance. As for holdovers, I bet you thought you'd never hear about 'Encanto' again, but you were wrong. It is back in the Top 10 for a 23rd week, with a small re-expansion, probably due to the outdoor cinemas which have opened over the last week. Most other films had small expansions and similarly small increases or small drops, except 'The Northman', which will likely not reach the 50K-admission milestone. 'Sonic 2' is edging closer to surpassing 'Turning Red' (79,863 admissions) to become the biggest kid flick of the year so far.

The last two weekends have been dominated by Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun' sequel. It had a mildly impressive opening, as well as hugely impressive sophomore hold, which now puts it well on its way to the 200K-admission blockbuster milestone. The performance of the 1986 original in Greece is unknown. However, 'Top Gun 2' is poised to overtake the last two 'Mission: Impossible' sequels. As you can see below, 'Ghost Protocol' and 'M:I 3' are also not safe.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation 31,378 41,749 Thu 27 Aug 15 139,695

'Doctor Strange 2' had its first less-than-50% drop on its 5th weekend, but is now guaranteed to run out of steam before 250K admissions. The shortened version of 'My Beloved Smyrna' was hoping for good legs throughout the summer, but dropped out of the Top 10 on its third weekend. A lot of newcomers appear and disappear quickly from the charts, while animated films 'Sonic 2' and DreamWorks Animation's 'The Bad Guys' have stayed in the Top 10 for several weeks. Next week sees the arrival of 'Jurassic: World: Dominion'.

The Whit Monday public holiday acted counter to what conventional knowledge tells us about Greek public holidays, i.e. that they usually do not boost the box office in any noticeable way. To the contrary, we saw very good increases and strong holds across the boards, as well as a decent opening from the latest Hollywood sequel. Indeed, 'Jurassic World: Dominion', the sixth film of the franchise dropped only 10.3% compared to 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom', which opened in June 2018. Such a drop is far above the post-pandemic average drop for sequels, which has been roughly around 50% in Greece. 'Fallen Kingdom' sold a total of 118,678 admissions – far less than 'Jurassic World's' 181,987 admissions from 2015. 'Dominion' has already achieved a solid debut (40,023 admissions including Monday), so whether it surpasses its predecessors will depend on its legs from now on. 'Maverick' also achieved a very solid hold for another weekend and is basically guaranteed to reach the 200K-admission blockbuster milestone – the third film of the year so far to do so. The only other opener to make the Top 10 was 'The Card Counter'.

Further down the list, a slew of holdovers have made impressive comebacks. The 'Doctor Strange' sequel achieved another sub-40% drop after having several precipitous weekend drops earlier in its run. However, there is no way it's beating 'The Batman' (263,224 admissions) and 'Maverick' could be giving it a run for its money. Animated films 'The Bad Guys', 'Elcano y Magallanes', 'Sonic 2' and 'Encanto' saw impressive boosts. The latter has now spent 24 weeks in the Top 10, which must be a modern-day all-time record (2000 onwards), although there is really no way to be certain about that, as I've only looked meticulously at records going back to about 2012. If you are sick of hearing about 'Encanto's' run, let me annoy you even more by telling you that it has now surpassed 'Venom: Let There Be Carnage' to rank as the ninth-biggest film of 2021.

Greek historical drama 'My Beloved Smyrna' completed the chart after spending its 16th week in the Top 10. It has been re-released in a shorter version playing at several outdoor cinemas, that are popular in Greece during the summer. Expect it to bounce in and out of the Top 10 during the next few months.

Disney-Pixar's first spin-off prequel, called 'Lightyear', will be released this coming weekend. Although the 'Toy Story' franchise has never been huge in Greece, the market has been starved of big animated tentpoles for quite a while. Something like 'Lightyear', which is based on a known franchise with instant recognition, could fare well – especially with Father's Day on Sunday.

'Lightyear', Pixar's first spin-off prequel and fifth entry in the 'Toy Story' franchise, was not the blockbuster Disney was hoping for, as it barely scraped past 'Top Gun 2's' fourth weekend, in what was the 17th closest photo finish in the Greek box office (the data I have go back to 2008). 'Lightyear' fared far worse than 'Toy Story 4' (43,642 admissions) and 'Toy Story 3' (56,358 admissions). Two factors probably contributed this failure: franchise fatigue and Disney's embracement of the LGBT agenda, which has clearly left many parents displeased.

Meanwhile, non-woke 'Top Gun 2' continues to soar with another 40% drop. Despite opening with half the admissions (57K vs 114K), it is in a good position to beat 'Doctor Strange 2', which has just about managed to achieve a 2x multiplier. Occasions such as these remind us that marketing makes the opening, but quality makes the legs.

On the other hand, 'Jurassic World: Dominion' dropped precipitously on its second weekend, suggesting poor word-of-mouth. As for other openers, Spanish comedy 'El buen patrón' scored an impressive five-figure tally in contrast to French comedy 'Haute Couture', which sold a fifth of the admissions from the same number of screens. The best hold of the weekend was achieved by Greek comedy 'Magnetic Fields', although the film's total is far from an achievement.

The news of the weekend is not so much 'Elvis's' first-place finish –this was kind of expected– but rather the horrific downfall of 'Lightyear', which must be Pixar's worst sophomore drop ever. Go woke, go broke. I hope Disney gets the message. In other news, Spanish comedy 'El buen patrón' increased by 7% and could be looking at a long run during the summer, helped by the Greek outdoor cinema culture. 'Top Gun 2' continued its impressive run with yet another 40% drop. With a nearly 10K-admission weekend and a nearly 220K-admission total, the odds are now in its favour to beat 'Doctor Strange 2' (231,901 admissions). 'Jurassic World: Dominion' had another big drop and will likely miss the 100K-admission milestone. It will be the worst-performing entry in the 'Jurassic World' saga by a significant margin. The best hold of the Top 10 was achieved by 'Strangers on a Train', a re-release from 1951 which is playing in a few outdoor cinemas. Finally, 'Encanto', which I am sure you are sick of hearing about, has now spent a whopping 26 weeks in the Top 10, a record that will likely not be broken for a long, long time. It is even nearing 100K admissions and, funnily enough, it could beat 'Sing 2', which had performed much better over the last Christmas holidays, selling 116,533 admissions in total.

We are halfway through the year! 2022 has clearly been far more lucrative than 2021 or 2020. It has sold 2.46 million tickets so far. However, it is still faring worse than the last pre-pandemic year, 2019, which had sold 4.39 million tickets at this point, meaning that 2022 is trailing 2019 by 44%. Hopefully with people gradually starting to leave the pandemic behind, they will become less scared of going to the cinema. This won't be helped by an empty slate, which is exactly what's happening next weekend, since there are no high-profile releases but only releases from 2021 and 2020, as well as a couple of re-releases from the 60s.

Last weekend sold 69,377 admissions, which is just below the 2022 median weekend of 70.1K admissions. It is reassuring in a sense that the summer traffic at the box office has not dropped significantly. The summer traffic in normal times would be way lower than the winter. Given that we are recovering from the earlier pandemic restrictions and the associated fear and that we are going through a period of insane inflation, there is even more reason for the summer box office to be quieter. All this probably means that last winter was suppressed due to fear of omicron and restrictions on who could enter cinemas. That all this is now behind us (hopefully forever) bodes well for the box office.

The weekend crown went to 'The Lost Daughter', which also scored the best per-screen average among the Top 10 (470 admissions per screen). The Maggie Gyllenhaal-directed psychological drama was filmed in Greece, a factor that has certainly boosted its performance. However, the fact that the film's release was delayed by 6 months means that it has been pirated relentlessly by, for all we know, potential cinemagoers. Other newcomers weren't nearly as impressive.

As for holdovers, 'Elvis' scored a decent sophomore hold in second place, although its total is nothing to get excited about. Meanwhile, 'Top Gun 2' stayed level and jumped up one spot in the rankings. It has now surpassed 'Doctor Strange 2' (232,227 admissions) to become the second biggest film of 2022. It is now pursuing 'The Batman's' 263,224-admission total in order to become the biggest film of the year. It will however have to deal with the arrival of 'Thor: Love and Thunder' and French comedy threequel 'Qu’est-ce qu’on a tous fait au bon Dieu?' this coming weekend. 'Jurassic World: Dominion' also enjoyed a very small drop but is still more likely than not to miss the 100K-admission milestone. This hasn't stopped it from surpassing Pixar's 'Turning Red' (82.7K admissions) and 'Sonic 2' (82.5K admissions) to rank 6th for the year, behind 'Uncharted' (96.5K admissions).

On the other hand, 'El buen patrón', which had seen an uptick last weekend, has now dropped quite hard and so has 'Lightyear'. The latter lost a huge number of screens after cinema owners abandoned it en masse due to its unsuccessful debut and subsequent steep sophomore drop.

This coming weekend, 'Thor: Love and Thunder' is hoping to sell close to its predecessor's 60,036 admissions, while French comedy threequel 'Qu’est-ce qu’on a tous fait au bon Dieu?' needs to beat its predecessor's 27,871 admissions. Both feats will not be easy and I would bet on both films missing the mark.

interesting... Turning Red really did well in the few markets it was released in. Compared to other movies, I mean.

Following the success of 'Doctor Strange 2', 'Thor 4' delivered yet another impressive result for the MCU, which continues to be the goose that lays golden eggs. The Waititi-directed fourquel scored the biggest opening for a Thor film, the 9th best opening for an MCU film and the 20th biggest superhero weekend overall. In the post-pandemic period, it is only one of few franchises that has built on its predecessor, although it has admittedly not grown as much as other MCU sequels, such as 'Doctor Strange 2' or 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'. That being said, 'Doctor Strange 2', which nearly doubled his predecessor's opening, had the worst multiplier for an MCU film, at 2.04x, worse even than 'Civil War', which was frontloaded due to opening on the lucrative post-Easter weekend.

The same positive climate did not extend further down the chart, since the French comedy and 'Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait' threequel opened to just more than half of its predecessor's opening. 'Top Gun 2' dropped less than 50% despite losing two thirds of its screens. It's still got chances of becoming the biggest film of the year, but it would have to beat 'The Batman's' 263,273-admission total. Finally, 'My Beloved Smyrna' spent its 18th weekend in the Top 10, making it the second best holdover of the last 20 years, second only to 'Encanto', which has spent 26 weekends in the Top 10.

'Thor 4' dropped heavily on its sophomore frame: worse than any other 'Thor' film, similar to 'Batman v Superman' (65.7%) and 'Justice League' (66.5%) and almost as bad as 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' (68.4%) and 'Black Widow' (69.7%). Its drops improved slightly in subsequent weekends. Even though it scored the best 'Thor' opening, it is now struggling to beat the total of 'Thor: Ragnarok' (165,522 admissions) and may have to settle for second-biggest film in the franchise.

After its threepeat, 'Thor 4' was succeeded by French historical drama 'Eiffel', but given that we are now heading into August, box office traffic is seeing a significant decline. No film sold more than 10K admissions, which is the first time this has happened since the (always quiet) Easter weekend. Before that, the last time was early February.

The most significant news of the week is that 'Top Gun 2' has surpassed 'The Batman' (263,273 admissions) to become the biggest film of the year in Greece so far. 'My Beloved Smyrna' has re-appeared in the Top 10, thanks to its outdoor cinema showings, as I have predicted since the beginning of the summer period.

Is Minions 2 releasing in Greece? If yes, what's the release date? Thanks!

IMDb doesn't have a release date yet for Greece. myfilm.gr also doesn't have a release date. I have found some TV ads for the film on Youtube, which came out a few days ago. They all say "coming to theaters in August".

Greeks are not known for planning ahead...

If I were to guess, I would say Thursday, August 18 or 25 or possibly on September 1.

I'm back! Sorry for the long delay. Brad Pitt's 'Bullet Train' opened well indeed. Given that we're talking about the heart of the summer, when everyone is lying on a beach far away from the multiplexes, this 24K-admission opening was quite the feat. Furthermore, as has been noted throughout the summer, Greek historical drama 'My Beloved Smyrna' has fluctuated significantly within the Top 10, as well as falling below the Top 10 and then jumping up a few ranks. 'Top Gun 2' had its first big drop, but is among several films that did so. Stay tuned for the remaining August weekends...

The two middle weekends of August were very quiet, as happens every year, selling 30,500 and 53,154 admissions respectively. Without new high-profile releases on August 11, a lot of holdovers saw screen expansions that boosted their earnings, even though the weekend as a whole was the second-worst of the year (after Easter weekend, which is always the quietest). On the other hand, the previous weekend's newcomers ('Bullet Train', 'Competencia oficial') saw sharp drops.

Here is a list of Brad Pitt's filmography, as an actor, in the last decade. Overall, 'Bullet Train' performed well, especially given that it opened in the heart of the summer.

The Lost City 13,916 Thu 24 Mar 22 46,363 3.33
Bullet Train 24,200 Thu 4 Aug 22 72,993* 3.02

*total as of September 4, 2022

On August 18, the English-language version of 'Minions 2' was released in select theaters, while the release date for the Greek-language version is August 25. Therefore, the comparison with other franchise entries is pointless. Comps with the rest of the franchise will be more relevant next weekend and projections for its total gross will become more accurate by its third weekend. Moreover, we cannot ignore 'Top Gun 2', which is the biggest film of the year and now seems to be wrapping up its run around 280K admissions. It has stayed in the Top 10 for 13 weekends which is a significant feat in itself for an action film. Such streaks in Greece are usually reserved for animated films. Last but not least, we must mention that 'Thor 4' has officially become the biggest ever 'Thor' film, beating 'Ragnarok's' 165.5K-admission total.

'Minions 2' was boosted significantly thanks to the release of the dubbed version (Greek), making it more accessible to children and families. Despite this, its opening is a far cry from that of 'Minions' (91,770 admissions) and 'Despicable Me 3' (82,418 admissions). The 11-day total is much closer to these numbers, but it is hard to make accurate comparisons due to the peculiar release pattern. Loads of newcomers took over the Top 10 list but none were particularly noteworthy. 'After Ever Happy', the fourth instalment in the 'After' franchise registered the franchise's worst opening, beating the record-low of 'After 3' (9,766 admissions), which was already far worse than the openings of the franchise's original title and first sequel. Brad Pitt's 'Bullet Train' has beaten 'Elvis's' total. 'Top Gun 2' has now spent 14 weeks in the Top 10.

Stay tuned for the results of the two first September weekends...

After is a money laundering scheme at this point made for Europe. The 4th one isn't performing well at all in any markets and a 5th one is still coming next year.

Also WTF at that Minions release pattern. One of the weirdest things I have ever seen.

I was looking and Greece and Portugal have more or less the same number of people but box office seems stronger in Portugal since the pandemic. Bullet Train for instance is sitting at ~145.000 tickets sold since opening weekend. However, both Allied and Once Upon a Time had similar performances in both countries.

'Minions 2' held quite well in its third weekend and is pretty much guaranteed to surpass 250K admissions. It may also give 'Top Gun 2' a run for its money to become the biggest 2022 film so far. Speaking of which, the Tom Cruise sequel has now matched 'Hotel Transylvania 3' at 15 consecutive weekends in the Top 10. This streak only trails 'Encanto' (22 consecutive weekends) and probably 'A Touch of Spice' (~17 weekends). If you thought it was the last you'd heard of 'Encanto', you were wrong. The film has now achieved its (probably final) feat: it has crossed the 100K-admission milestone, sitting at 100,039 admissions. Notably, 'Nope' plummeted by 80% after losing more than 100 screens, while on the other hand, 'Where the Crawdads Sing' added almost 100 screens (following last weekend's previews) and sold almost 10 times the number of tickets.

Wait what happened with Where The Crawdads Sing? Was it previews last weekend? Seems like a fantastic number to me. It only sold ~9.500 tickets here on opening weekend.

Yeah, last weekend's number came solely from Saturday previews. It didn't play on weekdays.

Dear friends, we finally got there. These are the numbers for the most recent weekend. George Clooney and Julia Roberts's 'Ticket to Paradise' is one of their most successful of the last decade. 'Minions 2' had a sizeable drop and is trailing its predecessor by a significant margin. Back in 2015, 'Minions' sold 38,423 admissions on its third weekend, with a 227,524-admission total. 'Minions 2' has a very similar total this weekend, but much lower weekend numbers, so I doubt it will manage to overtake its predecessor (290,513 admissions). The year's top film, 'Top Gun 2', is at 280K admissions and is also almost out of limits. However, I think that 'Minions 2' will more likely than not beat 'The Batman' (263K admissions). 'Where the Crawdads Sing' had a rather sharp drop, while the rest of the chart is abysmally uninteresting. Next weekend, Clooney & Roberts will most likely retain the weekend crown, since nothing of note will be released.
