GREECE: 'Kung Fu Panda 4' scores biggest opening of the franchise, 4th best for DreamWorks Animation

Recommended Posts

New films released this weekend:

  • X-Men: Apocalypse
  • Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
  • Le Grand Partage [French]
  • El cuerpo [Spanish]
  • Fathers and Daughters [American-Italian]
  • Melbourne [Iranian]
  • Projekt A [German]

'Apocalypse' should be the winner of the weekend, with 'winner' being a very relative term since I doubt it can even approach 50,000 admissions (most likely below 40,000 admisions too).

What a weekend! Very unexpected results with dramatic drops across the board and anemic openers. The biggest surprise is definitely the dissapointing opening of 'Alice 2'. What a complete waste of those 181 screens it played on. It has registered the lowest opening for a Disney live-action film since 2008 (I haven't compiled data for years before that). A truly horrifying opening, which, coupled with the dismal opening of 'The Jungle Book', indicates that Disney is in big trouble. Of course, in the bigger scheme, Disney has hit it out of the park this year and a shortfall in a small market like Greece is something they can easily ignore.

Disney live-action (since 2008)
Title Opening weekend Totals Multiple
National Treasures: Book of Secrets 85,000 187,428 2.21
Alice in Wonderland 83,183 243,710 2.93
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time 60,569 176,791 2.92
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian 49,818 141,755 2.85
Maleficent 45,705 164,394 3.60
Cinderella 44,917 138,850 3.09
The Lone Ranger 33,255 96,000-99,000 2.93
John Carter 22,066 49,530 2.24
Oz the Great and Powerful 21,936 80,104 3.65
Tomorrowland 21,441 42,039 1.96
The Jungle Book 20,488 76,734 3.75
The Sorcerer's Apprentice 20,479 77,303 3.77
Tron: Legacy 19,262 48,375 2.51
Alice Through the Looking Glass 13,083

(Films in yellow are still playing)

Surprisingly, though, as seen in the above table, 'The Jungle Book' will likely end up with the biggest multiple. No doubt this is an indication of how good the film was, something I am not expecting to happen for 'Alice 2'. The fact that its predecessor had such a large opening makes this opening even worse than it may seem. 'Alice 2' actually came close to opening in 3rd place because of 'The Nice Guys', which had potential, apart from the fact that no one knew what sort of movie it is or that it even exists, thanks to the lack of promotion.

As a result, 'Apocalypse' managed another 1st place finish in its sophomore frame. Its % drop was noticeably better than both 'BvS' and 'Civil War' and somewhat worse than 'Deadpool'.

Title 2nd-weekend drop Notes
Marvel's the Avengers 49.9%
The Dark Knight 52.0%
Iron Man 52.9% (Athens only)
Deadpool 59.1%
Iron Man 2 59.2% (Athens only)
Avengers: Age of Ultron 62.6%
Spider-Man 3 62.7% (Athens only)
X-Men: Apocalypse 62.7%
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 65.7%
Captain America: Civil War 69.0%

It was also worse than the 46.6% drop of 'Days of Future Past' and the 54.5% drop of 'First Class'. It doesn't look like it can reach far over 100K and surpassing 'Days of Future Past' will be quite tough, despite its promising opening. As for other holdovers, 'Angry Birds' will likely miss 100K and 'Civil War' won't out-run 'Deadpool', although it has at least surpassed 'Iron Man 3', a feat it will not manage in worldwide grosses. 'Truth', 'Neighbors 2', 'Comme un avion' and 'The Man Who Knew Infinity' have generated completely uninteresting results, while 'The Jungle Book' may just about surpass 'Oz'. It really feels like Disney live action is a hit-or-miss business. Next week, we've got 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2'. The first one made 4,595 admissions upon opening in 10th place, so if you thought that the 64,439 admissions sold this frame in Greece were very low, wait 'til next week for a number even more horrendous. Of course, it's nothing bizarre for this time of year but it does make following the box office quite boring.

New films released this weekend:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
  • Colonia [German-Luxembourgish-French]
  • The Dressmaker
  • El olivo [Spanish]
  • Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément! [French]

This may be the first time this year that no film sells more than 10,000 admissions over the weekend. Fun times.

WHat do u think about Warcraft, Rumors say it has very decent pre-sales in Greece.PLus it is a popular brand among gamers. It will open in 1st place right?

I think it will probably open in first place purely due to lack of competition. What do you mean by "rumors"? Where did you hear these rumors?

Another point to make is that Warcraft is selling strongly in Romania and since they are similar markets to a certain extent (culturally), it is possible that it could perform quite well in Greece.

If Greece will mirror Romania on this one, then it should be headed for a huge ass debut. I'm starting to think it might have a chance to enter Top 3 highest OW ever. That would mean around 150.000 admissions for OW.

Total admissions fell to a dismal 54,420 although 'The Nice Guys' did manage to remain above 10K admissions. Word-of-mouth for the film has been strong and may propagate in the following weeks – the film has already surpassed 'Alice 2' in total admissions despite opening lower. This easily made it the weekend's winner with both 'Apocalypse' and 'Alice 2' dropping sizeably. The former will come close to 'Days of Future Past' while the latter is really trying to beat the record-low of 'Tomorrowland' for a Disney live-action film (since 2008). 'El Olivo' and 'The Dressmaker' both did a good job, playing on only 13 and 11 screens respcetively, while the 'Un peu, beaucoup, aveuglément!' did OK from twice the number of screens as the other two. It will be interesting to see if any of those movies breaks out in the coming weeks. 'Angry Birds' and 'Civil War' both had terrible drops: the former will barely scrape a 2.5x muliptlier and the latter could miss 'Deadpool's total of 217,088 admissions. As for 'TMNT 2', it opened 19.5% lower than its predecessor – that % drop may not be as big as in the US & Canada, but its predecessor's 4,595-admission opening was very low in the first place. This franchise was clearly never a thing in Greece and no will it ever be. Finally, 'Colonia' could have done better, but even the fact that all 5 new releases entered the Top 10 isn't a reason to celebrate, given the abysmal numbers reported.

As for next week, we've got sequels to two highly successful films, 'The Conjuring' (opening: 32,740 admissions; total: 158,366 admissions) and 'Now You See Me' (opening: 22,574 admissions; 96,000 admissions), and 'Warcraft'. There thus seems to be something for everyone next week. The gaming culture in Greece is quite significant so it does seem like 'Warcraft' can outgun the competition, while we should also keep in mind the hold of 'The Nice Guys' and 'El Olivo'.

Sorry for reporting late this week. It took 3 high-profile releases to propel the weekend's admissions to above 100K admissions, which is the first June weekend this happens in June 2013. 'Warcraft' expectedly scored a respectable first-place finish; the pre-release hype was quite big, but given it opened in June, this is not a disappointing opening. This of course pales in comparison to the openings of other video-game adaptations, like 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' (60,569 admissions), but in these recessionary times such an opening is good enough. 'The Conjuring 2' barely dropped from its predecessor's opening (32,740 admissions), while 'Now You See Me 2' dropped 17.3%. Both are impressive given the 3-way competition of this weekend, however whether they can match the large mutliples of their predecessors is an entirely different question. All six top movies this weekend had, in fact, a per-screen average of more than 250 admissions, which hasn't been the case for more than a month now. 'Truman' and 'Lolo' had OK launches and 'El Olivo' held well, albeit slightly worse than I hoped. 'Angry Birds' is experiencing some holding power – the next family film will be 'The BFG' on the 30th of June, while 'Finding Dory' comes out in September, so the app adaptation should be able to surpass 90K in the coming weeks. Other films dropped horrendously, with both 'Apocalypse' and 'Alice 2' failing to reach the heights of their predecessors.

New films released this weekend:

  • Central Intelligence
  • El Clan [Argentinian]
  • Florence Foster Jenkins
  • Babysitting 2 [French]

Monday is a public holiday. I doubt 'CI' has any chance of finishing first so it will be a two-way race between 'Warcraft' and 'The Conjuring 2'.

In what was a pleasant and unexpected surprise, this weekend's first-place finisher was 'Florence Foster Jenkins'. Much like the star of its story, this film rose very quickly is likely to become a sustained success. It started from 2,812 admissions on Thursday and nearly quadrupled on Saturday with 10,073 admissions. 100K admissions should be a piece of cake for this film. 'El Clan' did not open as well as some other recent arthouse hits like 'Truman' and 'El Olivo' but it still earned a 500-admission screen average. The other two new releases were quite disappointing though, 'Central Intelligence' and 'Babysitting 2' opened below 5K admissions and with a less-than-150-admission screen average.

Apart from the top opener, what was also interesting (albeit less surprising) was that 'Conjuring 2' jumped ahead of 'Warcraft'. The latter did not manage to attract many more than the fanboys which rushed to watch it on opening weekend, hence the sizeable drop, in line with what happened to the film in other countries around the world. It was also probably not well-received, making the drop even bigger. On the other hand, horror films tend to have decent legs (not more than 50% drops) and 'Conjuring 2' continued that trend. However, it came nowhere near matching its predecessor's 8.4% second-weekend drop to 29,995 admisisons and, at the same time, dropping 50% on holiday weekend cannot be considered a success, realistically speaking. 'Now You See Me 2' also dropped more than its predecessor (26.0% drop to 16,712 admissions), so it looks like both sequels are unlikely to come close to their predecessor's totals. 'Now You See Me 2' nevertheless had the best hold of last weekend's Top 3, which may or may not be a sign of what happens later on.

'Truman' and 'El Olivo' both marched on, with the prior performing decidedly better though. 'Angry Birds' expectedly dropped very little, being the only animated option in the market. The distributor Feelgood made an admittedly smart decision to release 'Finding Dory' in early September when everyone is back from their holidays and there will be less competition from other animated offerings – 'Ice Age 5' being the main obstacle, which comes out in July. This of course meant that 'Angry Birds' would capitalise from this scarcity, although this is not at all evident from its middling 84K-admission total – an indication that lack of competition is only one factor contributing to success.

New films released this weekend:

  • Independence Day: Resurgence
  • Genius
  • En man som heter Ove [Swedish]
  • Jeux d'enfants [French–Belgian]
  • Paris, Texas [English-language German–French–British]
  • Der Himmel über Berlin [German–French]

Expect a race between 'Florence Foster Jenkins' and 'Independence Day: Resurgence'. Given that the latter is flopping everywhere, I'm giving the prior the edge.

The UK was not the only country celebrating its... Independence Day last week, as the Greek box office was celebrating it too. However, the sequel actually performed quite badly - even worse than last year's 'San Andras'. 'Florence' had a surprisingly and inexpilcably big drop. Hopefully the reason is that last weekend was a holiday weekend, and not bad word of mouth. 'Warcraft' expectedly had another steep drop, which made it fall behind 'Now You See Me 2'. The rest had nice small drops and the 'Conjuring 2' will soon be crossing 100K admissions. (Hooray?) As for newcomers, 'Genius' and 'Jeux d'Enfants' had really good per-screen averages (~600 admissions). We'll see if either manages anything exceptional in the coming weeks (rather unlikely).

Last weekend was 3% better than last year (only a couple thousand admissions). Compared to last year (and using only weekend admissions), 2016's first half is 3.2% ahead of 2015's first half. With things quite volatile and unstable in Greece at the moment, no one knows if 2016 will manage to maintain this lead, but this stat is nothing to frown upon.
