GREECE: 'Gladiator II' conquers quiet weekend box office a second time, but the emperor has no clothes.

Posted (edited)

Hey guys, I have found consistent sources that report weekend box office and total box office admissions for Greece. I shall post the results every week once the charts are published (between Monday and Wednesday usually). Grosses are harder to find (there may not even be a source).

I will also post some yearly charts and other data that I have compiled from weekend box office data and yearly reports.

NOTES:

  1. FreeCinema puts 'Titanic's' total at 1,208,373 admissions, which sounds outrageous to me. It the real number isn't 1.9 million, it should still be above 1.5 million admissions. Other sources put it at 1.85 million admissions.
  2. For positions 2-5, FreeCinema has slightly lower estimates for all four films, but the order remains the same.
    • 'A Touch of Spice' – Other reports put it at 1.6, 1.5 or 1.3 million admissions. Cine.gr, which has weekly data, stopped tracking 'Politiki Kouzina' when it had earned 1,255,000 admissions.
    • 'Safe Sex' – Other reports put it at 1.5 million or 1.4 million admissions.
  3. Cine.gr says that 'Troy' reached 950,000 admissions, but FreeCinema's number (916K) seems more plausible.
  4. 'Gladiator' and 'LOTR2' are nowhere to be found on FreeCinema's Top 10 list.
  5. 'Big Fat Greek Wedding's' number has been reported by at least two reliable sources (ethnos.gr and CINEMA magazine). FreeCinema puts it at 857,926 admissions.
  6. The number for 'LOTR1' comes from the CINEMA magazine. FreeCinema says 'LOTR1' sold 782,709 admissions.
  7. I feel that this is the best I could do to get numbers that are closest to the truth. This chart will never be perfect, but if there are any glaring omissions or mistakes, let me know what you think.

Notes: Before August 2005, films were traditionally released on a Friday, hence the 3-day figures above, whereas after that date, the official opening day was moved to Thursday, hence the 4-day figures above. This obviously creates some valid questions:

  1. In order to make it a fair comparison, should we remove the Thursday gross for films released after August 2005? ANSWER: For most films we don't have daily grosses anyway since distributors just report the 4-day figure usually. So we will stick with the 4-day figure.
  2. What should we do with films released before August 2005 that opened on a Thursday or a Wednesday? Should we include the Thrusday gross in the opening weekend figure? ANSWER: There are three ways to look at this: You can either (a) define the opening weekend as all admissions sold up to the film's first Sunday, which is what Box Office Mojo does for "overseas opening weekends" OR (b) you can just stick to the official 3-day weekend for films released before August 2005 OR (c) add solely the Thursday gross to the weekend figure, but not Wednesday or any earlier days. This is an issue for few films, such as 'The Matrix Reloaded', 'Harry Potter the Prisoner of Azkaban', 'Spider-Man 2' and 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy, which all opened on a Wednesday before August 2005. Every option is a compromise. If you do option (a), you obviously have to do that with all films, regardless of whether they were released before or after August 2005, but it just creates a complete mess, since comparisons become unfair and inconsistent. Few films actually were released earlier than the official weekend starting day, so this is a method that attempts to "satisfy" a minority of films at the expense of the majority. If you go with option (c), i.e. include the Thursday gross in the weekend figure, you can make a more fair comparison with films released after August 2005, but you make it less fair for films released on a Friday before August 2005. Since the above films were released before August 2005, I think it is better to be able to make fair comparisons with films released around the same time, rather than with films released much later. This leaves us with option (b).

**Admissions for these two films are from Athens only. The nationwide admissions are roughly double the Athens admissions. In dollar gross, they rank 3rd and 5th for 2005, so my estimate is that their admission totals are both in the range 300,000-350,000.

Inside Out dominated the top of the charts for 3 weeks, followed by 3 weeks of Minions domination. Minions had a bigger opening weekend, but Inside Out had better weekly % holds. It is unlikely that Minions will surpass Inside Out in total admissions.

They've made more than $2 million.

Weekly charts will published soon...

Hello fellow greek friend. I had compiled data from pretty much the same sources over the years, but didn't post them here because the market was always small and now it has collapsed due to the economic crisis.

Hi Joel M. Crisis or no crisis, I still find interest in this kind of information. Whether or not I am the only one or not, we shall find out soon. Thank you though for contributing. Do you mind if incorporate your data into my original post?

Minions will not surpass Inside Out. Everest will stay well ahead of Martian. The Lobster did very well in a limited release (it played in only 8 theaters, whereas as usual wide release is around 100 theaters). Hotel Transylvania 2 started well and with mid-week holidays (27th and 28th of October, and even the 26th in the second biggest city), this film will enjoy a significant boost. The question remains about whether Inside Out can cross 300,000 admissions but the holidays will certainly help it.

Of course you can use them. I just don't have a specific source for any of the numbers, but they are mostly from the same places (cine.gr,grandmagazine, myfilm.gr etc)

Are the rankings for 2008 and 2009 wrong, or are the admissions wrong?

The mid-week holidays really boosted the box office. Newcomers failed to attract viewers, leaving holdovers 'Hotel Transylvania 2' and 'Crimson Peak' to reign. Italian film 'Youth' and Greek film 'The Lobster' have been doing great business in limited release (17 and 9 theaters respectively). 'Inside Out' had a 13% drop and is now at 293,749 admissions. 300,000 is very likely to be reached. Both that film and 'Minions' have performed exceptionally: 'Inside Out' is the most successful Pixar film since 'Ratatouille' by a large margin. 'Minions' outgrossed 'Despicable Me 2' by more than 40%.

By next week, 'Inside Out', 'Minions' and 'Transylvania' will be 3 out of the 4 highest-grossing films of the past 2 months. This is just a point made to demonstrate that kids are one of the main driving forces in the cinema market and that competition is not as important a factor as we think. All three of these films have been quite successful which means that making a good or attractive film is at least as important as competition, if not more important.

Several films come out next week, including 'The Peanuts Movie', but none of them are expected to do significant business, especially since 'Spectre' is being released on November 12. Let me remind you that 'Skyfall' was the highest-grossing film of 2012 with 580,000 admissions, the biggest amount since 'Avatar'...

For a fourth time in the past three months, an animated feature film opened in first place. This time there was definitely a nostalgia factor although some older fans may have chosen not to watch the dubbed version of 'The Peanuts Movie'. The original English version was not offered in all venues. The weekend saw some impressive holds for many films. Most notably, 'O Astakos' expanded to 24 venues and stayed about flat from last weekend. The hype around this movie in Athens was definitely expected to fuel its grosses elsewhere however the admissions increase was not as big as some were hoping for. It remains to be seen whether word-of-mouth is good enough to propel it to above 100,000 admissions. 'The Last Witch Hunter' and 'No Escape', both in their sophomore frame, had impressive holds, whereas films in their third weekend dropped slightly more ('Hotel Transylvania 2', 'Crimson Peak' and 'Pan'). The most impressive results were posted by 'Minions' and 'Inside Out', the latter which re-entered the Top 10, despite the competition from other animated entries. Most hurt from 'The Peanuts Movie''s launch were family/kid-oriented films 'Hotel Transylvania 2' and 'Pan'. The weekend was generally quiet since adult and teenage moviegoers are anticipating 'Spectre', which comes out next weekend.

'Spectre' managed to surpass 'Skyfall''s opening weekend (165,301 admissions) but only by a bit, which means it remains to be seen whether 'Spectre' will surpass its predecessor in total gross. It nevertheless posted the biggest opening weekend of the year, pushing 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (140,443) and 'Fast and Furious 7' (137,711) to second and third place respectively. With the lurking threat of 'Star Wars 7', 'Spectre' may or may not finish in first place for the year but it will almost certainly be in 2015's Top 2 [update: it's been suggested that 'Star Wars 7' isn't actually much of a threat, based on the performance of the prequels]. None of the above was unexpected but the ongoing financial crisis always raises worries when it comes to moviegoing behaviour. Clearly playing as an adult and teen film, 'Spectre' annihilated all copmetition with no other major release opening above 10,000 admissions and most other non-kid films dropping by more than 50%. Only 'O Astakos' managed to drop less than that, although not much less. The latter has now reached 50,000 admissions, playing in only 20 venues last weekend, but seems to be losing steam. It remains a significant achievement for the director, George Lanthimos, whose films often enjoy critical appraisal (one of his films even receieved an Oscar nomination for foreign films).

Animated films seemed to be the only genre immune to 'Spectre''s onslaught, since 'The Peanuts Movie', 'Hotel Transylvania 2' and 'Minions' all dropped less than 35%. 'Inside Out', which dropped out of the Top 10, reached 300,000 admissions, becoming the first Pixar film to do so since 2007's 'Ratatouille'. Unless 'The Good Dinosaur' becomes a major hit, 'Inside Out' will be the highest-grossing animated film of the year. On another note, Hungarian film and foreign-Oscar contender 'Saul Fia' scored a higher per-theater average (1,338) than 'Spectre' and earned much more than 'Love the Coopers', despite playing in only 4 theaters (compared to 19 for the latter). Furthermore, Italian film 'Youth' re-entered the Top 10 and has now earned more than 40,000 admissions, which is nothing to frown upon, since it never played in more than 20 venues and played in only 12 last weekend.

Next weekend will see the release of 8 (!) new films, including Greek film 'The Republic', although none of them are expected to stand a chance against the second weekend of 'Spectre'.

Spectre has already won the year. Star Wars is iconic even in Greece but the movies were never that big. The prequels if I remember correctly were in the 200.000 admissions territory, and that number pre-crisis couldn't even get you in the yearly top10.

Thanks for the input. Had you ever compiled a list with the biggest opening weekends of all time?

No I was always checking what admissions this or that movie did since the late 90s but not Opening weekends, or second weekends. Also the data that was released to magazines and movie sites were scattered before the mid 00s.
