GREECE: 'Kung Fu Panda 4' scores biggest opening of the franchise, 4th best for DreamWorks Animation

Recommended Posts

According to the distributor, 'Endgame' has sold approximately 60,000 admissions on its second day.

This means that, in two days, it has already sold more than 'Infinity War's opening weekend (129K admissions, without previews).

Great Friday and Saturday will be quiet, but the film will pick up steam again on Easter Sunday. It should be at 200K admissions by then.

Official numbers will be out on Tuesday, hopefully. Wednesday is also a public holiday, so if we are unlucky, we'll have to wait 'til Thursday for official numbers.

The wait for box-office numbers was painful but well worth it. 'Avengers: Endgame's' global earthquake did not affect Greece in the same way that it did elsewhere. However, in these grim times, performing better than it did would have been almost impossible. The Greek box office is going through one of its quietest periods in the last 15 years (since last September and even worse from January onwards). The country is in a decade-long economic recession with little hope on the horizon. More than half a million people, most of them young and educated, have abandoned the country (the total population is only about 11 million). The MCU may be a decade-long franchise, but barring 'Inifinity War', its previous instalments had managed very moderate results: the best yearly ranking for a film was #7 for 'Civil War' in 2016. Taking all the above into account, when 'Endgame' broke the opening-day record on its first Wednesday, it didn't happen without raising a few eyebrows. Its total up to Sunday was a whopping 171,478 admissions (the traditional weekend is Thursday to Sunday). However, since most cinemas were closed on Friday and Saturday, it was basically a 3-day weekend. Even so, it broke the superhero opening-weekend record (held by 'Spider-Man 3' at 159,000 admissions). If it were a normal 4-day weekend, it would rank 8th among all-time opening weekends:

Ranking Title Weekend admissions
1 300 317,000–325,000
2 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 219,696
3 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End 213,490
4 Troy 200,000
5 2012 184,475
6 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 178,200
7 The Da Vinci Code 177,811
8 The Twilight Saga: New Moon 170,392
9 Loufa kai Parallagi: Seirines sto Aigaio [GR] 169,000
10 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 166,211

'Endgame' did not stop there though. With public holidays on Monday and Wednesday and with many workplaces closed on Tuesday, it scored a shocking 303,616 admissions in 8 days. Here is the day-by-day breakdown:

  Admissions
Wed, 24/4 78,261
Thu, 25/4 59,471
Fri, 26/4 1,144
Sat, 27/4 7,785
Sun, 28/4 24,817
Mon, 29/4 42,956
Tue, 30/4 50,154
Wed, 1/5 39,028

It is already the 2nd-biggest MCU film, with 'Marvel's the Avengers' being a distant third at 242,565 admissions and 'Infinity War's' 363,487-admission tally soon to be eclipsed. Among all superhero films, it already ranks 6th and will reach first place within a matter of days:

Biggest superhero films (since 2003)
Rank Title Opening weekend Total
1 Spider-Man 2 82,300 385,700
2 Spider-Man 3 159,000 366,987
3 Avengers: Infinity War 129,549 363,487
4 The Dark Knight Rises 74,530 346,585
5 The Dark Knight 100,000 339,520
6 Avengers: Endgame 93,217 303,616
7 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 122,428 276,311
8 The Avengers 75,755 242,565
9 Avengers: Age of Ultron 94,250 224,334
10 Deadpool 2 82,773 221,697

It's been a while since a movie has had such a satisfying opening frame, albeit this frame was quite extended.

Moving on to holdovers, the situation is worse than one could imagine. 'Endgame' commanded a ridiculous 88% market share. Even if we compare the entire week's earnings (Thu-to-Wed) with the preceding 4-day weekend, no holdover managed to increase. In fact out of 9 holdovers in this week's Top 10, only 3 managed to drop less than 50%: 'Dragon 3' (-33%), 'Missing Link' (-4%) and 'Dumbo' (-45%), when comparing the 7-day week to the preceding 4-day weekend.

A rebound is to be expected this weekend. I guesstimate that 'Endgame' will drop 50% on Thursday to 20K admissions. If that daily number is maintained on average throughout the weekend, that would lead to 80-90K admissions over the weekend and a 390,000-admission total by Sunday. Reaching 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens's' 446,258-admission tally should then be a piece of cake. The half-million mark is the ultimate goal. If it gets there, that would be truly remarkable. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. In the meantime, 'Dragon 3' and 'After' both have the 100K-admission milestone within sight and are fighting for who's gonna get there first. 'Dumbo' might also get there, although it will probably miss it by a little. This one certainly didn't fly!

And here are the admissions for every single film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As we can see, 'Captain Marvel' has done noticeably well and 'Endgame' will become the biggest film of the franchise by Sunday.

'Endgame' has exceeded expectations on every step of the way so far. After an initial rush leading to massively crowded theaters and numerous days of public holidays, it seems like this movie is reaching out to more than just die-hard fans. During the post-Easter weekend frame, it increased compared to its first 4-day weekend. Even when taking into account its opening Wednesday, it only dropped 37.5%. It reminds of 'Clash of the Titans' which opened on Easter Sunday (in 2010) to 36,000 admissions and went on to sell 114,484 admissions on its second weekend. 'Endgame's sophomore frame is also on par with 'Avatar's 2nd weekend (108,500 admissions) and it is higher than the opening weekends of all MCU films, except for 'Infinity War'. However, the biggest second weekend of all time is '300's' 285,000 admissions, which was an inconceivably strong hold (-12%) compared to its record-breaking opening frame. 'Endgame' has already become the biggest superhero film since 2003 (and maybe of all time?), by surpassing 'Spider-Man 2's' 385,700 admissions (the total admission count of 2002's 'Spider-Man' remains unknown though). All this is good news whichever way you slice it. I have done a few projections by comparing 'Endgame's' 2nd weekend to the trajectory of other MCU films that opened on the post-Easter weekend. One such film is 'Civil War', which also happens to be the most front-loaded MCU film (a detailed chart for all MCU films can be found in the above post). Even if 'Endgame' drops that bad from now on, it would still reach 530,000 admissions. If it follows 'Iron Man's' slightly less front-loaded trajectory (also released on the post-Easter weekend), it should reach 560,000 admissions. I would bet it ends up somewhere within that range. With 500K admissions a foregone conclusion by now, it would only be the 4th film since 'Avatar' to reach this remarkable milestone – the other three being 'Nisos' (a.k.a. 'The Island', a Greek comedy released 10 days after 'Avatar') at 549K admissions, 'Skyfall' at 580K admissions and 'Enas allos kosmos' (a.k.a. 'Worlds Apart', a Greek film released right before Christmas 2015) at 669K admissions. 'Worlds Apart' is far out of reach, but topping 'Skyfall' would be extremely impressive. I doubt it will happen, but the film has already achieved far more than anyone could ever dream of. The penetration of most MCU films in Greece has been noticeably low (mirroring most European countries); therefore seeing such numbers, especially during these dreadful box office doldrums, is truly mind-blowing.

In other news, 'Dragon 3' has crossed 100K admissions and is headed to become the franchise's biggest film (needs 131K admissions to do so). 'After' will soon reach 100K admissions too, a milestone that 'Dumbo' also has hopes of reaching. Otherwise, the market has been very quiet. It will be another 2 weeks by the time 'Pokemon Detective Pikachu' arrives and 3 weeks for 'Aladdin'. I wouldn't expect either film to break out, but even then, 'Endgame' has plenty of time to continue its ascent unabated.

'Endgame' experienced a precipitous drop this weekend but it was nothing outside the ordinary. 'Civil War' had a similar drop on the weekend that followed the end of the Easter holidays (-69%). 'Endgame' will soon cross the half-a-million milestone in terms of admissions, which is a truly remarkable feat. It has already moved ahead of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (446,258 admissions) and 'Spectre' (487,347 admissions), to become the biggest non-local film since 'Skyfall'. Other films were so weak, that this weekend marked the third consecutive weekend that 'Endgame' commanded more than 50% of the market share. This market would be dead otherwise and I wonder if the summer will ever recover from now on. Cumulative weekend admissions reached 65,049, which was a record-low for the year by a large margin. The only other film that performed decently was 'Cliffs of Freedom', an American film that deals with the Greek War for Independence against the Ottoman Empire. It expanded from 43 to 67 screens and managed to retain a decent number of viewers compared to last weekend. 'After' will soon reach 100K admissions and 'Dragon 3' will overtake 'Dragon 2' by next Sunday.

The 'John Wick' franchise has gone from better to good in a short space of time. Mimicking its American and overseas performance, the franchise started with a minuscule first chapter and exponential growth thereafter. One can only expect the fourth fiilm to expand further. Now it seems that 'John Wick 3' has the quality and word-of-mouth required to reach 100,000 admissions. It would need a much smaller multiplier than 'John Wick 2' to achieve this.

John Wick
Title National OW Release date Total admissions Multiple
John Wick 6,300 Thu 26 Feb 15 14,823 2.35
John Wick: Chapter Two 14,335 Thu 16 Feb 17 58,919 4.11
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum 31,789 Thu 16 May 19

'Endgame' settled for second place after three weekends on top. Despite another weekend in free-fall, the film has now crossed the 500K-admission mark. It has become the first film to achieve this since Greek film 'Worlds Apart' in January 2016. It is also the first non-local film since 'Skyfall' to reach 500K admissions. It is the fourth highest-grossing film of the last decade, behind the prior two films and 'What If...', a Greek film made by the same director as 'Worlds Apart'. It will probably beat 'What If...' (531,447 admissions) but has little to achieve in terms of milestones. It is still on its way to finish at 530–540K admissions. At the higher end, it would top 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' (539,622 admissions). Among films released in the modern era (data is incomplete but goes back to 1998), it would rank around 30th place. I know it's not what one would expect of a film contending to become the biggest film of all time worldwide, but given Greece's socio-economic situation, it is an amazing result.

'How to Train Your Dragon 3' just managed to surpass 'Dragon 2' but it may fall short the original film's 131,130-admission total. It will however top 'Kung Fu Panda 3' (123,831 admissions), saving it from the embarassment of ranking as the lowest-grossing animated threequel (among big Hollywood studios) – it will only rank second-to-last.

Everything else does not deserve a special mention. The yearly box office is currently running 7% behind 2018. That is a significant improvement over the 15% year-to-year difference that existed before 'Endgame's' opening. Next week, 'Aladdin' will be hoping to beat 'John Wick' for first place. I am willing to bet that 'Aladdin' will open higher than this year's 'Dumbo' (35,181 admissions) and it will probably match or surpass 'Cinderella' and 'Maleficent' (both opened to ~45K admissions). We'll find out next week!

On another rather quiet weekend, yet another Disney classic earns the top spot on the big screen. We are nearing the end of this exhausting 12-month journey which started last August with 'Christopher Robin' and will finish in July with 'The Lion King'. Disney released a whopping 6 live-action sequels/adaptations of old films within this time period. 'Aladdin' was marketed and released like an uber-blockbuster, playing in an eye-popping 267 screens. Certainly within the last decade, but maybe even all time, this is a record-high number of screens. For comparison, 'Avengers: Endgame' was released on 247 screens. 'Infinity War' was released in 207 screens. I did a quick search and managed to gather the following list of widest releases. It is probably not exhaustive, especially for films released in the 2000s.

Film Number of screens
Aladdin 267
Dumbo 261
Avengers: Endgame 247*
Mary Poppins Returns 245
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms 234
Beauty and the Beast 228

Avengers: Infinity War 207
Despicable Me 3 207
Star Wars: The Last Jedi 203
Cars 3 202
The Da Vinci Code 200
The Kings of Mykonos 200

*Opened on 241 screens, then expanded

**Opened on 218 screens, then expanded

It's weird that all of the Top 5 have been released with the last 7 months and they are all from Disney (the distributor for Disney's films in Greece is Feelgood Entertainment). I don't know if this is a new strategy by the distributor to maximise awareness but it must be quite costly. And for a film to be released in ~250 screens and only make ~30,000 admissions ('Nutcracker', 'Dumbo'), it's hard to understand what sort of business model they're running on.

While in other countries 'Aladdin' did better than 'Cinderella' or 'Maleficent', it failed to achieve the same in Greece. It is nevertheless the best Disney live-action film to be released since 2017's 'Beauty and the Beast' (there have been 5 such films since then). This obviously excludes the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise. Here is a more extensive chart:

'John Wick 3' has already surpassed the lifetime admissions of its predecessors. If its drops are only slightly better than the sophomore drop, then it will cross the 100K-admission milestone. 'Endgame' had another sharp drop (it has really never recovered since its second weekend – neither in Greece nor anywhere else) and will probably finish a tad higher than 530K admissions. 'Dragon 3' is still struggling to edge past 'Kung Fu Panda 3' (123,831 admissions). If it doesn't, it will be the worst animated threequel of all time (there are 10 such high-profile Hollywood films). Other openers performed as notoriously as usual. Nothing to say there. The weekend's cumulative admissions reached about 80,000 admissions – another disappointing figure. Each weekend from now on for the next two months will probably feature one high-profile Hollywood release. To be honest, I will probably enjoy watching them crumble one after the other. Next weekend there is 'Godzilla 2', then 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix', then 'Pokemon: Detective Pikachu'.

The 67,397 admissions sold in Greek cinemas this weekend were close to the 2019 record-low. The good news is that the box office has stopped following the dismal trend of late 2018–early 2019, which was one of the worst periods of the last decade. With 5 months of the year behind us, 2019 is trailing 2018 by 4.4%. However, it has moved ahead of 2013 (+8.2%) and 2014 (+4.0%), mostly thanks to 'Endgame'. Overall, the year seems to be heading for another tally between 9-10 million admissions, just like the year before it, barring any pleasant or dreadful surprises.

Diving into the specifics, 'Godzilla 2's' opening was less than a third of the first 'Godzilla', which opened back in May 2014 with 41,542 admissions. The average drop for most countries (save for China) was around 50%, suggesting that Greeks are in no mood for Godzilla at all. None of the other openers performed well either.

The genie managed to work its magic again, as 'Aladdin' stayed in first place and secured a small drop (although 'Dumbo' dropped 26% on its sophomore frame). It will easily cruise past 100K admissions. It will probably top the 'Nutcracker' and will set its eyes on 'Cinderella' (totals in the above post). Mediocre overall but could've been worse. 'John Wick 3' was annihilated. Reaching 100K admissions is no guarantee but it has already achieved more than anyone would've hoped for. 'Endgame' faced similar annihilation in what is the worst drop it has experienced since opening. 'Dragon 3' will soon top 'Panda 3'. It will thus only be the second-worst animated threequel from a major Hollywood studio. It will probably not surpass the original's 131,130-admission total.

Despite the Holy Spirit Monday (aka Whit Monday) holiday, this weekend was equally disappointing to the last one. I have actually started suspecting that holidays in Greece cause decreases to cinema attendace – with the exception of the Christmas holidays. However, it was an interesting weekend from a historic point of view. We had the closest photo finish since 2008. An unbelieveably small difference of 16 admissions separated first and second place. Even more impressively, the 3rd film was also a mere 433 admissions behind #1. On the Monday holiday, the first 4 films' tallies were in reverse order, with 'Aladdin' stealing the day. This led to even smaller differences, with all four films being within less than 1,000 admissions of each other. It is unlikely that this has ever happened in the recent past. For the 5-day holiday frame, 'Le Grand Bain' managed to beat 'The White Crow', which was the weekend's winner. The totals for the first 4 films were as follows:

Le Grand Bain 11,243
The White Crow 11,150
Men in Black International 11,029
Aladdin 10,334

'Le Grand Bain's' victory was even more impressive given that it was released on less than half the screens as 'The White Crow'. Its per-screen average was a decent 534 admissions. However, the highest per-screen average of the Top 10 was recorded by the re-release of 1957 film 'Witness for the Prosecution' (710 admissions). This is indicative of the dire state of the Greek box office but also of the embarassingly low quality of new films – it is so bad that people prefer to re-watch films released decades in the past.

In the meantime, 'Men in Black 4' completely tanked, just like last week's 'X-Men' sequel and 'Godzilla 2' before that. We don't know the opening-weekend performance of 'Men in Black' and 'Men in Black II' but the threequel sold 23,570 admissions in late May 2012. That's two-and-a-half times more than the latest sequel. These are the predecessor totals:

Men in Black 210,000
Men in Black II 180,000
Men in Black 3 61,857
Men in Black International 11,029

Next week, 'Toy Story 4' invades Greek cinemas. It will be interesting to see if it can live up to the heights of its predecessor, 'Toy Story 3', both quality-wise and commercially. That one sold north of 200K admissions in Greece back in summer 2010.

The weekend reached the same level as last year, when 'Ocean's 8' and 'Incredibles 2' were at the top. The latest Pixar sequel, 'Toy Story 4', opened 22.6% lower than its predecessor, which opened in June 2010. If it follows the same trajectoryas its predecessor, it will reach 155–160K admissions. Hardly a break-through success but it could've been worse. This is how it compares to other Pixar titles.

Brave 21,040 Thu 20 Sep 12 86,067 4.09

Notably, 'Toy Story 4's' opening was even worse than 'Cars 3' (ouch!) and very close to 'Wall-E'. As you can see, there are no official numbers for 'Toy Story' and 'Toy Story 2', but the article mentions that they both earned "a bit more than half" of their projected total for 'TS4' (140–150K admissions), which means about 80K admissions.

'Aladdin' is on its way to out-gross 'Cinderella' (138,850 admissions), after achieveing better % drops. Other openers and holdovers continued to tank. The best drop of the weekend was scored by the re-release of 1957 film 'Witness for the Prosecution'.

It was certainly unusual to have 3 films top 20K admissions in the same weekend during the month of June. 'Toy Story 4' held slightly better than its predecessor, which dropped 48% to 29,144 admissions for a 110,509-admission total. At this point, it is running 11% behind 'Toy Story 3', despite opening 23% lower. 'Annabelle Comes Home' scored the worst opening for the 'Conjuring' franchise by far. It is not a coincidence that the two worst-performing films of the franchise (this one and 'Conjuring 2') were the only ones not released during the fall season but during the quieter month of June.

'Far from Home' fared much better than its predecessor, which opened to 41,556 admissions exactly two years ago. Its opening was higher, even though it opened a day earlier, which means that it will almost certainly out-gross its predecessor's total. Furthermore, its opening was just below the MCU's average. The previous weekend's Top 3 all dropped heavily. 'Aladdin' has surpassed 'Cinderella' (138,850 admissions) and has generally fared much better than its opening suggested – both in Greece and worldwide.

French comedy sequel 'Qu'est-ce qu'on a encore fait au Bon Dieu?' deservedly topped the box office, while the latest 'Spider-Man' flick faced the expected front-loadedness. The comedy's predecessor opened in 4th place in early June 2014 to 6,081 admissions but had such good word of mouth that it managed to climb to first place on its 10th (!) weekend. It finished its run with 130,419 admissions and a whopping 21.4x multiplier. If the sequel were to score such heights, it would reach 600,000 admissions, enough to top 'Endgame's' 537K-admission total as the year's best. Such a total is very unlikely, but 100K admissions is the bare minimum. I would like to see a total above 200K admissions but of course, it is almost impossible to make an informed prediction. As for 'Far from Home', the film has already topped its predecessor (127,663 admissions). It remains to be seen if it can reach the MCU average of 166K admissions. 'Toy Story 4' enjoyed a bigger 4th weekend than the threequel. It is now trailing it by only 8.3%. Who knows though, 'The Lion King' may prevent it from catching up with 'Toy Story 3'.

A string of European films and re-releases of old films have occupied parts of the Top 10 for the last few weeks. 'Murder by Death' has managed to stay at #8 for 3 weeks, interestingly. Cumulative box office receipts reached 93,000 this weekend, which isn't bad for this time of year. Other than 'The Lion King' I can hardly see anything that could rock the boat in the coming weeks.

'The Lion King' roared proudly across 247 screens in Greece – the thrid biggest release ever (data are available for the last 10 years approximately). It is only behind 'Dumbo' (261 screens) and 'Aladdin' (267 screens). Its opening-weekend figure was far better than both aforementioned films. It was also the second-best opening among live-action re-imaginings of classical Disney animated films, only behind 'Alice in Wonderland's' 83,183-admission opening back in March 2010. That was when 3–D and Johnny Depp were still very popular. Nevertheless, the film is unlikely to reach the heights of the original 'Lion King', which was released in 1994 to the tune of 390,000 admissions, according to flix.gr. This piece of information, which I hadn't been able to find before, means that the film is actually the biggest animated film of all time, in Greece. As we go back in time though, the data get less and less reliable, with many theaters not having any electronic systems and a significant number of theaters not issuing receipts in order to avoid taxes.

'Qu'este-ce qu'on a fait 2' had a much higher drop than its predecessor. However, that one had opened to 6K admissions and had very small holds that led to a 130K-admission total. Such a multiplier was never going to happen for the sequel, which will be successful even if it matches its predecessor's total – an apparently achievable feat. 'Spider-Man: Far from Home' had another precipitous drop typical of comic-book films. 'Toy Story 4' was obliterated by 'The Lion King' but with no major animated opening until late August, it should manage good holds for the next few weeks. It remains to be seen whether it can match its predecessor's 202K-admission total. 'Annabelle Comes Home' will be by far the least-attended film of the franchise.

'The Lion King' had a bigger drop than 'Aladdin' or 'Dumbo' but it has already surpassed both in total admissions. In fact, thanks to strong weekdays, it has moved ahead of 'Alice in Wonderland' at the same point in its run. That film scored a 52,853-admission sophomore frame (-36%) for a 161,751-admission 11-day total. At this point, it is possible that 'The Lion King' will surpass 'Alice's' 243,710-admission total, to become the biggest live-action re-imagining of a classical Disney animated film. 'Qu'este-ce qu'on a fait 2', 'Far From Home' and 'Toy Story 4' had strong holds, which are likely to continue throughout August. The highest per-screen average of the weekend goes to French dramedy 'Celle que vous croyez' (480 admissions).

Sorry for the veeeeery long break since my last post. It was mainly because Greek distributors had not reported numbers for the August 8–11 weekend until a few days ago (despite reporting results for the August 15–18 weekend two weeks ago). I was still hoping that one of the Greek box-office websites would eventually report these results, which happened 2 days ago, thanks to freeciname.gr. Hopefully, this marks a return to normality after a very quiet summer.

Early August is generally the most quiet period of the year for Greek cineams. This year was not exception. The weekend of the 15th–18th was the quietest weekend of the year, thanks to the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which is a public holiday and everyone's –literally everyone's– excuse to escape their routine in search for a beach or their parents' and grandparents' village.

These were the cumulative admissions for each of the above four weekends:

Weekend Admissions
August 1st–4th 65,657
August 8th–11th 52,902
August 15th–18th 43,028
August 22nd–25th 120,209

Early August was therefore dominated by July leftovers: 'The Lion King' and French comedy sequel 'Qu'est-ce qu'on a encore fait au Bon Dieu?'. The prior has become the second-biggest film of the year. By Wednesday, August 28, it reached 272,929 admissions, having surpassed 'Alice in Wonderland' (243,710 admissions) and even 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' (272,700 admissions) to become the biggest live-action Disney film outside none other than... the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise. Depending on how well it holds, it may even cross the 300K-admission milestone, but it will probably finish around 290K admissions. Despite posting small drops, 'Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait 2' has lost all hope of topping its predecessor (130.4K admissions), in what was one of the bigger disappointments of the summer.

Then, however, came the big surge thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. Many of you may remember that DiCaprio's most recent film, 'The Revenant', had become the highest-grossing foreign film in Greece in 2016. His track record has been very consistent in Greece.

With 'Hobbs & Shaw' coming out next weekend and 'It: Chapter Two' the weekend after, it is unclear how well 'Once Upon a Time' will hold. However, it is hard to imagine it end with fewer than 240,000 admissions. If it remains relatively unaffected by the above films, it could even reach 300,000 admissions. Let's wait and find out!

As for Woody Allen's 'A Rainy Day in New York', it scored an opening slightly lower his most recent 15-year average (34K admissions). To reach the 15-year average for total admissions, the film would have to reach about 125,000 admissions – certainly not an impossible feat, but by no means a guarantee either. Clearly, Leo is the more popular of the two...

As for other films, 'Toy Story 4' has had good late legs, althought it will fail to reach its 'Toy Story 3 (202,242 admissions), and 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' has also enjoyed a better-than-average run for a Marvel film. It will still finish behind 'Captain Marvel' (202,622 admissions) but it finished above every other MCU film outside of the 'Avengers' films, 'Iron Man 3' and 'Captain America 3'. It is, of course, nowhere near the Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, whose films scored north of 300,000 admissions.

Random FYI: 'The Mule' re-entered the Top 10 on its 33rd weekend (it was released in January) with 896 admissions...

The 2018–2019 season finished with 7.3% fewer admissions than the 2017–2018 season. However, if we compare years instead of seasons, the first seven-and-a-half months of 2019 are trailing the same period of 2018 by only 2.9%, thanks to a better summer. Cinema owners must be worshipping Disney by now, since the top 5 summer titles belong to them: 'Endgame', 'The Lion King', 'Far From Home', 'Toy Story 4' and 'Aladdin'. These numbers do not take 'Once Upon a Time' into account, which has helped close the difference between 2018 and 2019 even more.

Next weekend will be an interesting competition between 'Once Upon a Time', The Secret Life of Pets 2' and 'Hobbs & Shaw'. Stay tuned...
