On one of the quietest weekends of 2018 so far, 'Adrift' managed a first-place finish it would never have dreamed of. Its closest competitor was not 'Solo, of course, which tanked with a 71% drop, headed for a final total around 50K admissions. We can all agree to pretend this film never existed... As I was saying, 'Adrift's closest competitor was 'Deadpool 2' which dropped nearly as bad as its predecessor did on its third weekend. That one earned slightly less, 10,251 admissions, and 'Deadpool 2' is in fact still ahead in total admissions by about 3.5K admissions. It remains to be seen if 'Deadpool 2' can retain this lead, but with 'Jurassic World 2' arriving this Thursday, it's hard to tell. 'Infinity War' continued its uninterrupted streak of 50%+ drops but has now crossed 360K admissions and is within breathing distance of 'Spider-Man 3' (367K admissions), although it looks like it won't be able to surpass it. The animated market is dead-quiet, which bodes well for 'The Incredibles 2', which arrives in 2 weeks. Among other openers, the 1955 British comedy 'The Ladykillers' was re-released in 3 'summer cinemas' – these are outdoor cinemas, a tradition that still survives in Greece. This film proves the state of modern cinema: apart from blockbuster popcorn flicks, other films are becoming less and less relevant, with very little quality and very little to say to audiences. Look no further than the whopping 988-admission per-screen average that this 1955 film achieved, while all the other films in the Top 10 managed per-screen averages less than one third of this.

'Jurassic World' is a falling kingdom for sure. Its predecessor wasn't very big in Greece anyway, scoring 45,739 admissions during its opening on its way to a 181,987-admission total. 'Fallen Kingdom's' opening represents a 15% drop, which is higher than the 6% average drop achieved by the markets that opened this weekend. It will certainly cross 100K admissions, although its is unlikely to achieve the same 4.0x multiplier achieved by its predecessor, which would propel it to a total north of 150K admissions. My guess is 120–140K admissions. In the meantime, other openers failed to gain any significant traction.

In terms of holdovers, last weekend's champion 'Adrift' dropped heavily, 'Solo' will probably miss 50K admissions and 'Deadpool 2' is slowing down faster than its predecessor but is still ahead in total admissions by about 1,500 admissions. Its total will be very similar to the 218K-admission of the first one. 'Money' had a nice bump but an inconsequential total of less than 9K admissions and 'Nut Job 2' is enjoying its (most likely) last week in the Top 10, since 'The Incredibles 2' will take over the market this Thursday. The first one opened to about 38,700 admissions back in November 2004, which was quite high for an animated film at the time, ranking third all time (my data go back to 2003) behind 'Finding Nemo' (45,615 admissions) and 'Shrek 2' (40,600 admissions). 'Incredibles 2' is unlikely to score the third-biggest opening weekend for an animated film – that would require something around 91K admissions. However, Pixar has released other sequels in June too: 'Toy Story 3' and 'Cars 3', which made 56,358 and 51,698 admissions respectively. One would like to think that Incredibles has left a better legacy than the 'Cars' franchise, so I would expect it to top that film's opening. The film is likely to attract not only children but old fans too, so an opening at or above the level of 'Toy Story 3' seems reasonable.

'Incredibles 2' debuted at exactly the same level that its predecessor opened 13-and-a-half years ago. In the current state of the Greek market, this could probably be seen as a victory for the film, although comparison with other Pixar sequels ('Cars 3', 'Toy Story 3' and 'Finding Dory') suggest that it is rather disappointing. It debuted at the same exact level as last week's 'Jurassic World 2', which saw a big drop this week – far worse than the 38% drop of its predecessor. It is now trailing it by 31K admissions. In the meantime, other openers disappointed (the best per-screen average was 192). 'Deadpool 2' has, for the first time, fallen behind its predecessor, which had sold 212,893 admissions by its 5th weekend. Total weekend admissions reached 87K, which is 32% less than last year, when 'Cars 3' had opened to 51,698 admissions.

Another blockbuster opened to mediocre levels, another June weekend gathered fewer admissions than last year (82,767 vs 92,398), another boring box office report. This time it was 'Ocean's' turn to disappoint: 'Ocean's Twelve' scored a 3-day opening of 83,000 admissions back in December 2004, while 'Ocean's Thirteen' scored a 4-day opening of 101,900 admissions. There are no data for 'Ocean's Eleven'. In total admissions, 'Twleve' sold about 460K and 'Thirteen' sold 266K. 'Ocean's 8' wil be lucky to reach 100K admissions.

With regard to holdovers, 'Incredibles 2' is running ahead of its predecessor, which was at 74,300 admissions by its second Sunday. It has chances of reaching 150K admissions, but it will not get further than that since 'Hotel Transylvania 3' opens in 3 weeks. The Pixar average of 196K admissions is out of reach. 'Jurassic World 2' is running far behind its predecessor, which dropped 54% on its 3rd weekend, selling 13,005 admissions, for a total of 140,878 admissions. 'Deadpool 2' has done well in Greece, needing only a few hundred admissions to surpass its predecessor's total.

Cumulative admissions remained once again below 100K this weekend. Drops were not as bad for the big blockbusters although there was no real competition anyway. 'Ocean's 8' may just about manage to scrape past 100K admissions. 'Incredibles 2' is 22K admissions ahead of its predecessor, meaning that it is on course to top 150K admissions. 'Fallen Kingdom' is about 50K admissions behind 'Jurassic World' and will probably finish around 120K admissions, compared to 'Jurassic World's' 182K admissions.

In other news, 'Deadpool 2' has officially surpassed its predecessor and is cashing in at 219.9K admissions. 'Infinity War' ended its run at 363.4K admissions. We are at the year's mid-point. 2018 is running about 5-10% behind the last 3 years (2015–2017), all 3 of which ended between 9.8 and 10.1 million admissions. However, it is 8-9% ahead of 2013 and 2014 and 1% ahead of 2012. If the second semester does not recover, we are headed for about 9.5 million admissions at the year's end.

The second semester of 2018 started just like last year's second semester: with an MCU film at #1. Then, it was 'Spider-Man: Homecoming', which opened to 41.6K admissions. This year, 'Ant-Man 2' opened to less than half the admissions, matching its predecessor (18,674 admissions). It may be the time of year, it may be that Ant-Man didn't even play in 'Infinity War', it may be that Marvel just hasn't persuaded Greeks that 'Ant-Man' is a thing. For whatever reason, the two 'Ant-Man' films have scored the two worst openings of the MCU. 'Ant-Man' is also at the bottom of the list in terms of total admissions (47,895). It seems reasonable to expect 'Ant-Man 2' to follow the same pattern and finish around 50K admissions. 'Hotel Transylvania 3' had previews this weekend, which were lower than its predecessor (11K admissions) and also lower than the last Hollywood animated film that had previews: Kung Fu Panda 3 (12K admissions).

As for holdovers, 'Incredibles 2' continued its solid path to 150K admissions but 'Ocean's 8' may miss the 100K-admission milestone. 'Fallen Kingdom' had another sharpd drop (like most films this weekend, to be fair) and 'Deadpool 2' has passed 220K admissions.

In an unexpected twist of evetns, 'Hotel Transylvania 3' beat 'Incredibles 2' and scored the biggest animated opening of the year, even when not taking previews into account. It almost matched its predecessor, which opened to 45,815 admissions (56,824 admissions when including previews) in October of 2015, a month that is busier than July at the box office. That one finished with 175K admissions, a total that this one is aiming for too. It is worth noting that 'C'est la vie!' enjoyed a nice bump – will it be this summer's 'Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu?' (130K admissions in summer 2014). 'American Animals' scored the best per-screen average of the weekend (679 admissions).

'Mamma Mia 2' managed a resepctable decline from its predecessor's 130,798-admission weekend, which is all we could have hoped for. That film's 622K-admission total is far out of reach and it seems that anything above 250K admissions will be a success, since it will be lurking at similar levels to the 'Fifty Shades' franchise. The weekend's total admissions were 122,993 admissions, which was thte highest total for a weekend in the month of July, since the weekend that 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2' opened, seven years ago. That weekend's total was 146,525 admissions.

As for holdovers, 'Hotel Transylvania 3' had a precipitous drop – far worse than its predecessor's 42% drop. It is now trailing that film by 7K admissions. It will probably finish between the first and second film (135K and 175K admissions), although if the sharp drops continue, it may hit rock bottom. 'Ant-Man 2' has now successfully surpassed its predecessor and has a small chance of topping 'Captain America: The First Avenger' (65,938 admissions) but will otherwise remain second from the bottom in the MCU. I could talk about other films but I have little time and I also don't see the point.

'Mamma Mia 2' had a sharp drop, meaning that it still hasn't made, in 10 days, what its predecessor made in 4. 200K admissions is a target that is slowly fading into the distance, unless the film recovers next week. 'Hotel Transylvania 3' had a nice comeback this week and is only trailing its predecessor by 2.2K admissions. 'The First Purge', the top opener, has scored the best opening of the franchise. I should note though that 'The Purge' and 'The Purge: Anarchy' did not qualify for a theatrical release in Greece and went straight to DVD/Bluray. 'The Purge: Election Year' was the first to open in theaters, achieving a 3,545-admission opening and a 16,873-admission total. 'Charming' opened in the shadow of 'Hotel Transylvania 3'. 'C'est la vie!' is had the best hold of the Top 10.

What a horrific weekend! 'Mamma Mia 2' crashed once again but still managed to retain first place for a 3rd weekend in a row. It has actually dropped so badly that 'Drac Pack 3', which stayed in second place for a 3rd weekend in a row, has chances of surpassing 'Mamma Mia 2' in total admissions by the end of their runs. Three French comedies finished off the Top 5, although, as noted in the original source, the state of the Greek box office is probably funnier (if you like black humour) than the comedies themselves. 'C'est la vie!' is interestingly managing to capitalise on good word-of-mouth, and with a whole month of summer left, it could get close to 100K admissions, if cinema owners don't take it off their screens.

The bottom half of the chart is as uninteresting as you'd expect. 2 films did manage to get a boost from last weekend (boy, was that 'Mamma Mia' drop hard) but it is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. 'The Darkest Minds' was a total disaster, as in the US & Canada, possibly since young people are enjoying their holidays at the beach or in their grandparents' village, rather than in the big cities.

Weekend 09–12/08/2018

There isn't enough data to compile a table for this weekend. However, we do know that 'Mamma Mia 2' sold 6,708 admissions and ranked first for the fourth weekend in a row. It is the first time that this happened in two-and-a-half years, since 'The Revenant'. Cumulative admissions for the weekend reached a dreadful 54,106 admissions – the second-worst figure for the year, only ahead of Easter weekend's 53,492 admissions. The summer box office seems to be full of French films, which rarely achieve anything notable though.

Cumulative admissions were only slightly better than last weekend – 61,191. Newcomers were numerous yet tanked once again. 'Hotel Transylvania 3' is ahead of its predecessor in terms of total admissions by 3K, but earned about 2K admissions less than its predecessor during its 6th weekend. Therefore, it looks like it will finish at around the same level (175K admissions). 'Mamma Mia 2' is certainly going to miss 200K admissions. 'Ocean's 8' did manage to surpass the 100K-admission milestone but it has sold less than half the admissions of 'Ocean's 13' (266K), not to mention 'Ocean's 12's' 460K...

Next week comes 'The Meg' which I'm hoping will at least churn out a decent 30K-admission opening.

Seven new films made their way into the Top 10 last weekend. However, this happened because holdovers dropped sharply, rather than because of the new films' overperformance. Total admissions were at 85,452 admissions, off 8% from last year, when 'Dunkirk' earned nearly as much as this year's 7 openers combined. With two thirds of the year behind us, 2018 is trailing 2017 by 3.7% and 2016 by 8.5%. It is on par with 2012 and 2015, while being far ahead of 2013 and 2014. It therefore seems to be headed for about 9.5–10 million admissions.

Back to the weekend specifics: 'The Meg' was far from a mega hit. Most other action flicks of the past year opened higher but, whatever the comps may be, a 26K-admission opening weekend is never good news anyway.  Legs do not look promising either, since 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout' is coming out this Thursday. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Tom Cruise's 5th reprise of Ethan Hunt is also far more enjoyable than 'The Meg', for both critics and audiences.

As for other openers, yet another French film made it into the Top 3 and also achieved the highest per-screen average among openers – although 304 admissions is hardly an impressive number. Regarding holdovers, 'Hotel Transylavania 3' continued unabated, staying effectively unchanged from last weekend. It is now ahead of its predecessor at the same point in its run. Therefore, it should probably beat its 175,304-admission total. Here is a table of animated threequels:

Rank Title Opening weekend Release date Total Multiple
1 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 80.337 Mon 29 Jun 09 384.829 4,79
2 Despicable Me 3 82.418 Thu 31 Aug 17 308.997 3,75
3 Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted 57.560 Thu 30 Aug 12 256.200 4,45
4 Toy Story 3 56.358 Thu 24 Jun 10 202.242 3,59
5 Shrek the Third 28.400 Thu 6 Sep 07 181.250 6,38
6 Cars 3 51.698 Thu 15 Jun 17 175.915 3,40
7 Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation 44.672 Thu 12 Jul 18 165.218 3,70
8 Smurfs: The Lost Village 52.324 Thu 30 Mar 17 156.267 2,99
9 Kung Fu Panda 3 35.335 Thu 17 Mar 16 123.831 3,50

Looks poised to reach 5th place on the chart, ahead of 'Shrek 3'. Hard to imagine it getting any higher than that. 'Mamma Mia 2' will die off between 180–185K admissions, so the two films will be neck-and-neck for 4th place (currently) on the yearly chart.

'M:I6' should open to at least 40K admissions to receive a pass, although I am hoping for at least 50K and maybe close to 60K admissions.

Regarding 'M:I6':

"Also new this session were Italy and Greece. In the former, Fallout topped Rogue Nation by 4% with $2.7M. The latter was 20% above at $397K."

According to my crude calculations, this translates to 48,000–49,000 admissions, ahead of both 'Ghost Protocol' and 'Rogue Nation'.

In Greece, September is considered, for all intents and purposes, the beginning of the new season (no, I don't mean fall), whether we are talking about TV, about school or any other major social activity. Therefore, the first weekend of the new season (which may start in August) is usually reserved for one of the most high-profile releases of the year, especially since very few franchises dare to release a film in the middle of the summer and with good reason (they usually don't get the best results). This year, the lucrative spot was occupied by 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout', the latest chapter in a two-decade long franchise. It definitely did not disappoint, and given that it is actually one of the more enjoyable instalments in the series, it may achieve a good multiplier. However, cumulative admissions overall were very weak (103,918) – the weakest for the first September weekend since 2011, when 'Captain America: The First Avenger' led a weekend that sold 102,190 admissions in total. And no wonder cinemas are so quiet – there is a film released 8 weeks ago in this weekend's Top 3...

So here is a comparison of 'Fallout' with the rest of the Tom Cruise franchise:

Mission: Impossible
Title Athens OW National OW Release date Total admissions
Mission: Impossible II Fri 27 Oct 00 368,464
Mission: Impossible Fri 15 Nov 96 228,832
Mission: Impossible III 65,500 98,900 Wed 3 May 06 209,927
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol 31,140 46,440 Thu 15 Dec 11 185,264
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation 31,378 41,749 Thu 27 Aug 15 139,695
Mission: Impossible – Fallout 39,107 52,700 Thu 30 Aug 18 52,700

After reaching a peak with its second outing, the franchise has been in steady decline, a trend that 'Fallout' is aiming to reverse. Should it have good holds from now on, it could certainly aim for a total above 200K admissions and maybe even give the original a run for its money. However, that is quite unrealistic. 'M:I5' had a 3.3x multiplier while having to deal with competition from 'Inside Out', 'Ant-Man', 'Minions', 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' and 'Maze Runner 2', among others. This one has far less competition from high-profile franchises, so it should at least match that multiplier, which would lead to north of 175,000 admissions. Reaching 'Ghost Protocol's' total is not out of the question but it will have a tough time reaching 200K admissions. 'Dunkirk' managed to do so a year ago, after opening to 53,457 admissions, so we'll see...

Looking below the top spot, 'The Meg' [UPDATE: had a standard 52% drop. Yesterday, it was mistakenly reported that it had sold 90,597 admissions so far. That is extremely unlikely since it means its Monday-to-Wednesday total would add up to more than its two first weekends (51,868 vs 38,739 admissions). I think the other source (grandmagazine.gr) has a more accurate number which I have updated above (60,068). The film will probably miss the 100K-admission milestone.] 'Drac Pack 3' has capitalised on the absence of animated fare and could even reach 200K admissions, if the holds keep being so strong. 'The Children Act' and 'Sueño en otro idioma' had good, but not great, per-screen averages (596 and 708 admissions, respectively), but admissions for most films have been below a level that would merit an... honourable mention.

'The Nun' had an asbolutely stunning debut, the 3rd biggest of the year, only behind 'Avengers 3' and 'Deadpool 2'. It was by far the biggest debut of the franchise, as seen in the table below. If it follows the trajectory of the most frontloaded film of the fanchise so far, 'Annabelle' (3.1x mutliplier), it would still make 236K admissions, enough to rank second for the year. However, even a 2.7x multiplier would be enough for it to get past 200K admissions so I'm gonna bet this milestone will be crossed soon.

The Nun 34,242 76,026 Thu 6 Sep 18

'Mission: Impossible – Fallout' had a pretty standard drop and is ahead of both 'Ghost Protocol' and 'Rogue Nation' at the same point in their runs by about 13K admissions. A safe lead for the moment, even though it is hard to predict its final total. 'Christopher Robin' opened among the ranks of 'Alice 2' (13,083 admissions) and 'The BFG' (11,951 admissions). Thanks to a significant boost, 'Hotel Transylvania 3' has topped its predecessor, as well as 'Cars 3' and Shrek 3', among other animated threequels. It is therefore looking poised to cross 200K admissions by the looks of it and it may even top 'Toy Story 3'.

'The Nun' comfortably retained the lead at the weekend chart. It took it only 11 days to top all previous films of the 'Conjuring' franchise. Interestingly, it had a hold identical to last year's 'It'. If it follows the same trajectory as that film, it would reach 205K admissions. However, that film dropped quite heavily after its 2nd weekend. This one needs to hold only slightly better to become 2018's second biggest film, ahead of 'Deadpool 2' (221K admissions). This seems doable. If it continued to drop by 54% from now on, it would get to 230K admissions.

'The Equalizer 2' opened 20.4% lower than its predecessor (22,288 admissions). That film finished its run with 76,181 admissions, a number which the sequel can only achieve with an unlikely 4.3x mutliplier. 'The Predator' performed even worse as a sequel of the once popular 'Predator' franchise, which has seen every new film decline from the previous one:

  • 'Alien vs Predator' (2004): opened to 16,400 admissions in Athens (nationwide opening unknown)
  • 'Alien vs Predator – Requiem' (2007): opened to 10,600 admissions in Athens (nationwide opening unknown) – 35% drop
  • 'Predator' (2010): opened to 9,570 admissions nationwide – 34% drop in Athens. Reached 25,294 total admissions.
  • 'The Predator' (2018): 11% drop nationwide

'Fallout' is still leading 'Rogue Nation' by 9K admissions at the same point in its run but has fallen behind 'Ghost Protocol', which, boosted by the Christmas holidays, had reached 144K admissions by its 3rd weekend. 'Drac Pack 3' is continuing its impressive run. It is poised to top 200K admissions and 'Toy Story 3' very soon. It is close to surpassing other recent animated films such as 'The Secret Life of Pets' (208K admissions) and 'Ice Age 5' (215 admissions). 'Christopher Robin' had a sharp drop, while 'The Meg' will definitely miss 100K admissions, and maybe even 90K admissions.

The 'Johnny English' franchise struck cinemas a third time since the start of the millenium, with a middling a result. The original had opened to 15,000 admissions in April 2003 and finished its run north of 150,000 admissions (the exact total is unknown but this is the admission total on the last weekend before dropping below the Top 10). The sequel, 'Johnny English Reborn', opened to a significantly higher 40,740-admission weekend in September 2011 but was also more frontloaded, resulting in a final total of 151,449 admissions. The threequel will be lucky to cross the 100K-admission milestone, by the look of things. No other openers did notable numbers.

Meanwhile, 'The Nun' has crossed 200K admissions and seems poised to become the 2nd-biggest film of the year. It may even do so by next weekend. 'The Equalizer 2' is looking at a final tally of 50K admissions, which is significantly lower than its predecessor's 76K-admission total. The weekend before the last, 'Hotel Transylvania 3' achieved the unprecedented feat (since 2015) of remaining in the Top 5 for 10 consecutive weekends. Add in the preview weekend, on which it ranked second, and that makes it 11 weekends in the Top 5.  It has also matched 'La La Land' for the longest stay in the Top 10: 12 weekends (when including the preview weekend). It is likely to break that record as it also crosses the 200K-admission milestone – clearly remaining unaffected by the arrival of 'Smallfoot'. It is by far the most successful film of the summer (June to August). 'M:I6 – Fallout' is days away from topping 'Rogue Nation' and is headed for about 150K admissions in total. 'Ghost Protocol's' total remains out of reach.

Cumulative admissions were around 100K admissions (give or take) in what has clearly been the weakest September since 2014. No wonder, if you take into account that there hasn't been an 'Inside Out', a 'Minions', a 'Dory' or a 'Despicable Me 3' to boost it.

We have just witnessed one of the worst September weekends of the last decade. Total admissions were around 90,000 admissions, a further drop from the previous weekend's 98,264 admissions. An animated film was the only film to sell more than 10,000 admissions. 'Smallfoot', which was boosted by last weekend's previews, still failed to attract a significant number of followers, although animated films are known for their staying power rather than strong openings. No better example than 'Transylvania 3', which has crossed 200,000 admissions and is showing no signs of slowing down, after a 30% boost. 'The Nun' is days away from topping 'Deadpool 2' for the year's 2nd place. That being said, the Drac Pack is now seriously in pursuit of 2nd place too. 'Johhny English 3' crashed on its sophomore frame and is unlikely to reach 100,000 admissions.

With only a quarter of the year left, 2018 has fallen further behind 2017 and 2016, trailing them by 6.2% and 10.1% respectively. It is 1.2% behind 2015, but that year was boosted significantly in its final quarter by films like 'Hotel Transylvania 2', 'Spectre', 'Star Wars 7' and the year's winner, 'Worlds Apart'. It looks like 2018 will finish below previous years, around 9.5 million admissions.

After an anemic September, the box office is back on track with a decent-but-not-impressive 147,050 admissions sold over the weekend. This was exclusively thanks to 'Venom', in which Tom Hardy continues the theme of playing roles that involve covering his face in some way. For a solo superhero film, it has done quite well, opening lower than 'Deadpool' but higher than 'Hancock', 'Iron Man' (61.4K admissions) and 'Doctor Strange' (58.2K admissions). It was also far off from its archenemy, 'Spider-Man', but no one was expecting it to go that high:

*3-day (Fri-Sun) opening

'Venom' is probably going to finish around 180,000 admissions. The 200K-admission milestone is possible but not probable at this stage. It will greatly depend on its legs but the 3x multiplier required to achieve that is uncommon among superhero films.

'A Star is Born' and 'The Old Man & the Gun' both topped 10K admissions and, when taking into account 'Smallfoot', it is the first time in 7 months that at least 4 films top 10K admissions in a single weekend. 'Hotel Transylvania 3' is back in the Top 5 and has broken a record (since 2015) for the longest stay in the Top 10: 13 (consecutive) weekends. It should get to at least 15. The previous high was achieved by 'Home' and 'La La Land', tied at 12. When taking into account its preview weekend, it has spent 14 consecutive weekends in the Top 10 and 12 weekends in the Top 5. 'The Nun' is now the second-biggest release of 2018, behind 'Avengers: Infinity War'. At the moment, the only contender to take its place is 'Transylvania 3'. 'The Nun' has surpassed all previous instalments of the 'Conjuring' franchise by far and should finish very close to 250K admissions.

The weekend saw the top triad remain the same as last weekend. Openers were weak, while holdovers exhibited rare stamina. Starting with the weekend's winner, 'Venom' comfortably retained its lead. What was unexpected though was its solid 47% drop. That was in the same league as 'Marvel's the Avengers' and 'Wonder Woman'. All superhero films that dropped less than 50% on their sophomore frame had a multiplier of at least 3.2x. That would send 'Venom' to a 214K-admission total – good for the year's 5th place. Anything higher than that could push it past 'Deadpool 2' to rank as the second-best superhero film of the year, behind 'Infinity War'. Not bad at all.

'A Star is Born' stayed in second place and held spectacularly well. Can it top 100K admissions? It undoubtedly will if drops stay this small. 'Smallfoot' is capitalising on the empty animated market and could also be aiming for a six-digit total. 'Transylvania 3' has now stayed in the Top 10 for a whopping 14 weeks (15 weeks including previews). Its admission total is far from record-breaking but it currently ranks 4th on the yearly chart and could even reach 3rd place.

No opener merits analysis. An honorable mention goes to 'Alpha' for topping 10K admissions. Next week seems to be very quiet, with 'Venom' probably threepeating at the top. For an updated 2018 yearly chart, click here.
