Horror and thriller films are doing exceptionally well this year. 'The Snowman' has amazingly outdone the opening weekend of both 'The Girl on the Train' (32,260 admissions) and 'Gone Girl' (55,449 admissions). The latter went on to 276.9K admissions, which is a tough feat to achieve for 'The Snowman'. Even a total just above 200K admissions would leave me satisfied. 'Blade Runner 2049' held relatively well, probably reflecting good word of mouth, and there is a possibility it will reach 100K admissions. 'It' dropped hard in the face of 'The Snowman'. The clown has a very comfortable lead in total admissions but I do wonder how close to it the snowman can actually get. Quiet openings in #4 and #5, small drops for a string of animated films lower down the chart. 'Despicable Me 3' is still on its way to beat 'Minions' and 'Finding Dory'. It will be interesting to see whether it can reach 300K admissions, becoming the 3rd 2017 film to do so.

Hi Quigley if DM3 crosses 300K, where will it rank among all-time animated films in Greece?

Thx!

It's hard to say for sure. I have only found data going back to about 2003.

This is what I have for the Top 10:

Ranking Title Admissions
1 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 384,829
2 Ice Age: The Meltdown 346,500*

*my own estimate; very confident it's between 335,000 and 355,000

3 Finding Nemo 340,731 3D re-release: 28,110; Total: 368,841
4 Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa 323,607
5 Ratatouille 312,019
6 Inside Out 310,104
7 Ice Age: Continental Drift 305,445
8 Happy Feet 295,500
9 Finding Dory 295,338
10 Minions 290,513

I think 'Despicable Me 3' is very likely to end up at #8, even if it doesn't top 300K admissions.

Even if we had, the chart for CGI animation would be the same. All CGI animations were bombing in Greece before Nemo. The Toy Story's, Monsters, Shrek 1 even the first Ice Age which turned into a giant franchise with sequels didn't do much at the boxoffice, most kids discovered them on VHS/DVD/Cable. The Disney Renaissance movies were very popular in the 90s, though.

It has been a very snowy October for the Greek box office, due to the impressive performance of a film that bombed in most other countries. The same cannot be said for 'Geostorm' and 'mother!' which bombed here as much as everywhere else. The 'Snowman' dropped much worse than 'Gone Girl' (-20%) and 'The Girl on the Train' (-43%). It is bound to clear 150K admissions but 200K admissions is in no way guaranteed. 'Blade Runner 2049' might just inch past 100K admissions and 'It' will inch past 'Fifty Shades Darker' to rank 4th for the year. 300K admissions is not in the picture anymore, unlike 'Despicable Me 3' which will probably get there in about 3 weeks. It is looking to capitalise on next week's national holiday: schools will be closed on the 27th due to a holiday on Saturday the 28th of October. In Thessaloniki, Greece's second-biggest city, schools will also be closed on the 26th, due to the celebration of the city's patron saint and the city's liberation from the Ottoman Empire. Gru will have to put up with 'The LEGO Ninjago Movie', although it will probably not affect it in any major way. Nothing else exciting to report, except that I am very curious about the performance of next week's Greek film 'Το τελευταίο σημείωμα' ('The Last Note').

'The Last Note' didn't do as well as expected. It wasn't far off from previous Greek historical dramas, though, and it will need a big multiplier, as they all did, in order to reach a respectable number of admissions (300K+). It was not the best of numbers for the director, Pantelis Voulgaris, either.

As you can see, the opening weekend is hardly a predictor for success. We can only wait and see but with 'Thor 3', 'Justice League' and 'Star Wars 8' coming up, I doubt that this can hold well enough to get far past 300K admissions. Even 200K admissions are not guaranteed at this point.

Among other openers, 'Ninjago' did relatively well. 'The LEGO Movie' sold 18,123 admissions on opening weekend and 'The LEGO Batman Movie' sold 21,173 admissions. There is nothing notable about other openers. Holdovers in general dropped heavily. 'The Snowman' will likely not get far past 150K admissions. 'Despicable Me 3' was the only holdover in the Top 10 to increase from last weekend. It has past 'Minions' (290.5K admissions) in the meantime, to become the biggest animated film of the franchise, the biggest film for Illumination Entertainment and the 10th biggest animated film of all time. Admittedly, this was a school holiday frame, so its numbers could drop sharply from here. Overall, though, its chances of reaching 300K admissions are quite high and it could even surpass 'Pirates 5' (309.7K admissions) in the long run. '2049' is still trying to push itself past 100K admissions and 'It' is days away from topping 'Fifty Shades Darker'. It will not get much further though.

Next week, 'Thor 3' will enter the scene. An opening around 60K admissions would be solid and certainly enough for a 1st-place finish. With 10 months of the year behind us, 2017 is 6% behind 2016, 1% behind 2015, on par with 2012 and way ahead of 2013 and 2014. Barring major surprises, 2017 should finish with around 9.5-10 million admissions.

'Thor 3' opened spot on, with a bit more than 60K admissions. It was the biggest 'Thor' opening. Interestingly enough, neither the 'Iron Man' films nor 'Thor' have seen as huge increases as the 'Captain America' films have seen. 'Ragnarok' nevertheless scored the biggest superhero opening of the year, but 'Justice League' will likely top that. If 'Ragnarok' were to follow the sequel's trajectory, which also opened in November, it would reach 150K admissions. With 'Justice League' opening in 2 weeks, that will be a tough feat I think.

'The Last Note' has a very impressive sophomore hold. It has crossed 100K admissions already. If it were to maintain the same % drops for the rest of its run, it would reach about 330K admissions. It seems almost impossible for it not to cross 200K admissions but whether it can reach 300K admissions is not clear. A number of other Greek films open in the next few weeks, with 'Kazantazkis' being another historical drama by the director of 'El Greco' (767K admissions). It's difficult to tell which ones will break out and which ones will bomb but this one is about a very famous Greek poet; the film seems to strike the proper tone; the release date is ideal, but of course it will all boil down to "wait and see". There is another film, though, that will certainly reach 300K admissions and that is 'Despicable Me 3'. It has just crossed 'Dory' and is gonna give 'Pirates 5' a run for its money (309.7K admissions). 'Ninjago' had a solid drop but is behind both its predecessors at the same point in their run.

A trio of smaller films opened mid-chart, the most impressive being "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" which scored a 1,306-admission per-screen average. Other holdovers held poorly. The 'Snowman' had a promising opening but ended up doing much worse then 'Gone Girl'. [UPDATE:] Total weekend admissions reached 171K, which is higher than last year but does not break into this year's Top 5 weekends.

Regarding 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer', I think it is relevant to point out that it is directed by Giorgos Lanthimos, a Greek director who has received many international awards for his past films. He does not produce films in Greece anymore but they remain popular arthouse films in Greece.

Director: Giorgos Lanthimos
Title National OW Release date Total admissions
Ὁ καλύτερός μου φίλος (My Best Friend) Fri 2 Mar 01 350,000
Κινέττα (Kinetta) <1,000 Thu 22 Mar 07
Κυνόδοντας (Dogtooth) 4,500 Thu 22 Oct 09 40,000
Ἄλπεις (Alps) 3,290 Thu 27 Oct 11 9,064

Ὁ θάνατος τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐλαφιοῦ (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) 9,139 Thu 2 Nov 17

'My Best Friend' was more of a blockbuster comedy. His later films are the most critically acclaimed ones. It will be interesting to see if 'The Killing of a Scared Deer' can beat 'The Lobster'.

It probably won't. Dogtooth was a very big deal in the arthouse circuit because of the Cannes win and it became a much much bigger deal a year after when it got nominated at the oscars. And then Lobster was his english-speaking debut with famous international actors and got screens even outside metropolitan areas which was unprecedent for arthouse movies.

Greek filmmakers getting oscar nominations and working with world famous actors is very rare. It hadn't happened since the 1960s until Lanthimos and the hype was huge for a few years. I think it has died down considerably and Lanthimos being an "international" filmmaker is old hat by now. It will probably do a little better than any non-Lanthimos arthouse movie of its ilk but that's about it.

There was an unexpected twist this weekend, with 'Murder on the Orient Express' doing exceedingly well compared to its North American opening. It scored the 5th best opening of 2017:

1 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales 108,145
2 It 101,387
3 Fifty Shades Darker 88,426
4 Despicable Me 3 82,418
5 Murder on the Orient Express 70,308

In the face of this sleeper hit, 'Thor 3' held quite well, with a smaller drop than both its predecessors and last year's 'Doctor Strange'. 'The Last Note' had another small drop and it is basically on par with 'With Heart & Soul', a 2009 film from the same director which just about managed to cross 200K admissions. That film had reached 148,576 admissions at the same point in its run. 'Jigsaw' opened lower than any of the 7 'Saw' films:

Saw
Title Athens OW National OW Release date Total admissions
Saw 16,000 25,200 Fri 25 Mar 05
Saw II 27,200 39,700 Thu 8 Dec 05

Saw 3D 12,993 20,628 Thu 4 Nov 10 63,369
Jigsaw 6,741 12,878 Thu 9 Nov 17

*The numbers in parentheses denote my estimate. The other number is the total admissions on the last weekend of the film's run for which data were available.

'Ninjago' has fallen far behind its predecessors. 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' had a small drop, on par with 'The Lobster's drop from 2 years ago. Similarly small were the drops for 'Gnome Alone' and 'Despicable Me 3', while 'Success Story' plummeted.

We witnessed a fair amount of surprises this weekend at the Greek box office. In general, the 17 November holiday (schools and and universities are closed), which fell on a Friday this year, helped boost earnings. Cumulative admissions were 206,306, which is the second best number for the year, following the first weekend of January! 'Justice League' opened to lackluster numbers, much lower than 'The Dark Knight', 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Batman v Superman'. It was actually very close to 'Suicide Squad's opening last year (61,555 admissions) and less than the 4-day (Friday-to-Monday) opening of 'Batman Begins' back in 2005 – 70,000 admissions. It still scored the best superhero opening of 2017, slightly above 'Ragnarok'. Chances of reaching 200K admissions are not very high.

'Murder on the Orient Express' saw an amazing hold and was very close to retaining first place. It scored the second-biggest second weekend of 2017, but it certainly deserves more credit than that, because the first place goes to the second weekend of 'The Fate of the Furious', which opened on Easter weekend, which is a very quiet weekend and usually leads to rebound second weekend anyway. If this hold for 'Orient Express' was not purely because of the holiday, but due to word of mouth, I think that it has chances of appraoching 300K admissions. 250K admissions are a given at this point.

Greek film 'The Last Note' continues to follow an identical trajectory to 'With Heart & Soul', a film by the same director that opened in October 2009 and reached 173,328 admissions by the end of its fourth weekend. Its run is basically over since 'Kazantzakis' opens next week, a Greek film about an important Greek poet. Historical dramas are often very successful but not always. It is hard to predict how well this film will do, but it has the same director as 'El Greco' (767K admissions), which is also a historical drama. This does not mean much in terms of chances for commercial success, as we have seen before with uber-hit 'Touch of Spice' (1.3M admissions) and the mediocre run of 'Mythopathy' (134K admissions). 'Happy Family' saw an increase in its second weekend, as did 'The Killing of a Scared Deer'. 'Thor 3' was the one film that plummeted despite the holiday, probably due to the opening of 'Justice League'. Nevertheless, it has crossed 150K admissions, it has surpassed both predecessors and it has also achieved a higher multiplier than both of them. It is about to surpass 'Iron Man 2' (154K admissions) and the question is whether it can beat 'Doctor Strange's 169K-admission total.

In other news, 'Despicable Me' finally crossed 300K admissions. It is now at 302,285 admissions and still has chances of beating 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' (309.7K admissions). It is very likely to top 'Ice Age 4' (305.4K admissions) and rank 7th among all-time animated films.

The box office may have been busy elsewhere but coming off last week's holiday, Greek cinemas were noticeably more quiet, even with the arrival of 'Kazantzakis'. The film scored the biggest opening of the year (as yet) for a Greek film. It was less than half of 'El Greco' (141,585 admissions), which opened in 2007, and lower than 'God Loves Caviar' (85,115 admissions), which opened in 2012, both from the same director. With three more Greek films coming out this year:

  • Θησαυρός (Treasure) – comedy, December 7
  • Πολυξένη (Polyxeni) – historical drama, December 14
  • Τζαμάικα (Jamaica) – dramedy, December 21

'Kazantzakis' has few chances of a long run. Anything above 200K admissions and up to 250K admissions should be satisfactory. We now move on to 'Justice League' which dropped precipitously from its middling debut and actually recorded a worse drop than 'Batman v Superman' (-66.5% vs -65.7%). By the looks of it, it may not even manage to top 'Thor 3', since it is already 10K admissions behind through the same point in its run. 'Orient Express' held better than most other films this weekend. It has already done an impressive job and, in fact, 50% drops from now on could push it past 300K admissions. We will keep our eyes open for what happens next, but it is a certainty that it will surpass 'It' and reaching around 280K admissions is a foregone conclusion. Three minor openers scored 2,649, 2,011 and 1,994 admissions respectively.

'The Last Note' continues, remarkably, to follow an identical path to 'With Heart & Soul', which had reached 185,464 admissions through the same point in its run. Therefore it seems that a total just above or just below 200K admissions seems likely. 'Thor 3' has now moved ahead of 'Iron Man 2', thus ranking 6th among the 17 MCU films released so far. The only other it could surpass is last fall's 'Doctor Strange' (169K admissions) although it is rather unlikely. Other films have been quite unremarkable: 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' will probably surpass 'Dogtooth' but not 'The Lobster' (both from the same director).

Despite the sharp drop from last week, business remained significantly higher than last November throughout all 4 weekends of the month. The year-to-date is still 1% behind 2015, on par with 2012 and far ahead of 2013 or 2014, however, in comparison to 2016, it has managed to cut the difference down from -6% at the end of October to -2.7% by the end of November (which is not even over yet technically). In addition to that, next month has 5 full weekends so by the looks of it the year may manage to top 10 million admissions after all.

Do You know what the highest grossing film of all time in Euros is?

No idea. In all my (desperate) searches I have come across very few mentions of grosses rather than admissions. Only Box Office Mojo has grosses but the international section of BOM is not very accurate so I can't really trust it. I found one source that explicitly states the gross in euros (dryfrost) for 2006-2008: http://dryfrost.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/box-office-2006-08.html. I have no idea if this blog is accurate or where it got its data from. The rest that I have added are either calculated by multiplying the final admission total by the average yearly ticket price (avg) or mutliplying the last BOM gross for the film by the exchange rate on that weekend (BOM). As you can see, the results are very variable so I can't say anything for sure.

1 Loufa & Parallagi 9.73M € (BOM) or 8.68M € (avg)
2 Titanic 9.15-9.6M € (avg)
3 300 8.85M € (dryfrost) or 8.36M € (BOM) or 8.91M € (avg)
4 Avatar 7.81M € (BOM)
5 Touch of Spice 7.16M € (BOM)
6 Safe Sex 6.48M € (avg)
7 El Greco 6.41M € (dryfrost) or 5.61M € (BOM) or 5.75M € (avg)
8 Lord of the Rings 3 6.32M € (BOM)
9 Mamma Mia! 5.75M € (dryfrost)
10 Troy 5.58M € (BOM)

By the looks of it I don't think any film has ever crossed 10M €. The top spot is a 3-way draw between 'Loufa & Parallagi', 'Titanic' and '300' but as you can see each source gives wildly different results so I could not tell you with confidence which one of the 3 is actually in first place. (I have put the numbers in bold according to this priority dryfrost > BOM > avg but this ranking is very subjective).

Just like 'The Last Note' before it, historical drama 'Kazantzakis' had a minor drop, a bit bigger than 20%. Reaching the 200K-admission milestone is a foregone conclusion. With three new Greek films being released on the next three consecutive weeekends it could drop hard from now on. 'Murder on the Orient Express' is undoubtedly the biggest surprise of the year for the Greek box office. It could top 'Pirates 5' as early as next weekend to rank #1 for the year and a 350K-admission finish is within the realm of possibilities. Yes, 'It' was also a surprise but with a (then) all-time record of worldwide trailer views within 24 hours, the signs were there beforehand.

'Paddington 2' achieved a significant bump from the original's opening (12,730 admissions) but it still quite low nevertheless. 'Justice League' has surpassed fellow DC films 'Wonder Woman' (125,196 admissions) and 'Man of Steel' (129,721 admissions) and this year's 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' (127,663 admissions) but will fall behind this year's 'Thor 3' and 'Logan' (189,928 admissions) and fellow DC film 'Suidice Squad' (207,982 admissions). A couple of minor openings in the middel chart were followed by 'The Last Note' which is still on course to cross 200K admissions, even if only by a little. 'Jigsaw' had a small bump which makes it seem that it will manage to surpass 'Saw VI' (upper estimate: 48K admissions), but none of the other 'Saw' films. Finally, 'Thor 3' had a nice hold and will get close to last year's 'Doctor Strange' (169,010 admissions) even if it doesn't overtake it.

With around 145K admissions, this weekend is the 5th in a row that remains above last year. The slate for December looks quite strong, so there are still hopes that this year will end up above the last one. Check the first page of this thread for updated yearly and all-time charts.

'Kazantzakis' became the third film to three-peat this year, following 'Fifty Shades Darker' in February and 'The Fate of the Furious' in April. It was, however, a Pyrrhic victory since it dropped 55%, due to the release of a Greek comedy called 'Treasure'. The remaining run of 'Kazantzakis' is likely to short-lived, since it will face fierce competition from 2 other Greek films on the following weekends. 'Treasure' had a rather quiet debut at #2. Of the three other openers in the Top 10, only 'The Square' is worth noting, for achieving an 858-admission per-screen average.

'Paddington 2' had an imrpessive hold, but with 'Coco' and 'Ferdinand' being released over the next two weekends, it is difficult to tell if it can match its predecessor's 92,307-admission total. 'Orient Express' continued its phenomenal (for these grim times) run and is days away from becoming the biggest film of the year. Its final total should be somewhere around 330–340K admissions. 'The Last Note' will almost certainly cross 200K admissions, just like 'With Heart & Soul' (2009), but will not get much further.

Total admissions this weekend were slightly higher than last year. The fun starts next weekend, when 'Polyxeni' (another Greek historical drama), 'The Last Jedi' and 'Coco' are being released. It will be a very busy weekend, 'The Last Jedi' being the most likely winner.

The weekend was not as explosive as one would have hoped. 'The Last Jedi' settled for the third best opening weekend of 2017, following 'Pirates 5' (108.1K admissions) and 'It' (101.4K admissions). It was a 27% drop from 'The Force Awakens' (137.1K admissions) yet far ahead of 'Rogue One' (60.2K admissions). 'Coco' scored the lowest opening for a Pixar film, but hopefully it will not end up with lowest total of any Pixar film ('Brave' at 86.1K admissions) and will enjoy a long run and top 100K admissions, in similar fashion to last year's 'Moana'. Two Greek films, 'Kazantzakis' and 'The Last Note' crossed the 200K-admission milestone, becoming the only Greek films of the year to have achieved it so far. Despite the fact that Greek historical drama 'Polyxeni' tanked completely with its opening not even making it into the Top 10, 'Kazantzakis' and many other films dropped hard due to the arrival of 'The Last Jedi'. 'Murder on the Orient Express' became the biggest film of the year, surpassing previous #1, 'Pirates 5' (309.7K admissions). It had an impressive hold, despite the arrival of the Jedi, therefore it looks like it will continue to have good holds in the future. Barring 'Jamaica', a Greek film of unknown box office potential that will be released next week, it looks like 'Orient Express' will end as the biggest film of the year, since if 'The Last Jedi' follows the trajectory of 'The Force Awakens', it will end up with 320–330K admissions. This is definitely a drastic overturn of previous expectations.

Notably, a Hungarian film scored an 800-admission per-screen average, while 'The Square' doubled its number of screens after last week's successful arthouse opening. The total admissions sold this weekend were 184K, which is 30K admissions higher than last year.
