'Deadpool' maintained a definite lead at the box office although it dropped significantly from its stellar opening. Its 59% drop was average, I would say, for a superhero film. Even if it continues the trajectory of ~60% drops, it can reach 200,000 admissions, the second film of the year to reach the milestone. Hopefully a third one is on its way next weekend, Disney's own Zootopia. This weekend had the lowest admission total of the year so far (118,074 admissions) by a wide margin. Newcomers were generally unimpressive, with 'Gods of Egypt' leading the pack. 'Spotlight', however, is bound to post good holds following its Oscar Best Picture win (baseδ on historical comparisons we can expect a big increase next weekend). I don't exclude the possibility of it crossing 100,000 admissions but it's too early for any serious predictions. All other openers earned nothing much and 'To xipnima tis anixis' was dreadful (725 admissions from 17 screens).

Among other holdovers, no comment on 'Hail, Ceasar!'. 'Suffragettes' haδ a 2nd-weekend drop of 77%! 'The Revenant' had its biggest drop yet (I really miss that 2nd weekend drop of 27%), while 'Worlds Apart' is looking for a final total around 670,000 admissions. Nice holds, as always, were posted by the animated bunch. No major news for films below the Top 10.

Really sorry for not posting this earlier. I've been quite busy this week. It was not a surprise to anyone that 'Zootopia' topped the charts although it underperformed slightly. What was a surprise was the difference between first and second place: 629 tickets. It's been quite some time since we saw such a photo finish. 'Zootopia' is thus unlikely to reach 200,000 admissions but I think 150,000 is possible, given its stellar ratings and universal appraisal. 'London Has Fallen' opened to more the 'Olympus Has Fallen' (19,266 admissions) but it is still far from a success. Among other openers 'Daddy's Home' and 'The 5th Wave' both underperformed. 'Loreak' was the only respectable opening, since it played in 5 theaters.

Furthermore it was surprising how most movies dropped precipitously: 'Deadpool', 'Gods of Egypt', 'The Forest', 'The Brothers Grimsby', 'Hail, Ceasar!', 'Un plus une' and many more dropped more than 50% this weekend. Most of them actually dropped dramatically - around 70 or 80% which is truly puzzling. Most Oscar nominees and winners were the only ones that survived the plague that hit the box office: 'Spotlight', Best Picture winner, had a rather mild boost of 2% but it can easily reach 100,000 admissions if it manages to hold well for a couple more weeks. 'The Revenant' had its smallest drop yet and has now surpassed 'Shutter Island' and 'The Departed' to become the third -not second (kudos to Joel M) - biggest film starring DiCaprio (behind 'Inception' and 'Titanic'). 'Danish Girl' also held well but 'The Big Short' on the hand plummeted.

New films released this weekend:

  • Η Μικρή Άρκτος (I Mikri Arktos; Ursa Minor) [GR]
  • The Divergent Series: Allegiant
  • Zoolander 2
  • Where to Invade Next
  • Sunset Song
  • L'Hermine [French]
  • Felix and Meira [Canadian]
  • El Ardor [Multi-country co-production]
  • Taxi [Iranian]

'Divergent' earned 11,116 admissions on its opening, while 'Insurgent' made 20,412 admissions. 'Allegiant', the penultimate film of the series, may follow this upward trend (similarly to 'Mockingjay - Part 1'). Expect a very small drop from 'Zootopia' especially with a Monday holiday on the 14th, so the race to the top will be interesting.

This past weekend was the third in a row to record the lowest admission total of the year (i.e. each weekend beat the previous weekend's record-low) with 113,989 admissions. Expect the next weekend to beat this record again. At least Monday saved the day, being a holiday. 'Zootopia' unsurprisingly retained the #1 spot with a stunning 1% drop. Its run is far from over, keeping in mind that a two-day holiday is coming up on the 24th and 25th of March (a Thursday and Friday). 150,000 admissions remain a possibility. The news is even better consdering the competition it faced from 'Kung Fu Panda 3', which scored 12,100 admissions worth of previews this weekend from 63 theaters. To put that in perspective, it suffices to say that 'Kung Fu Panda 2' earned the comparable amount of 12,583 admissions on its third weekend from 82 thetaers. In second place came 'London Has Fallen' again, posting an impressive 27% drop from its opening. Its predecessor, 'Olympus Has Fallen', earned a total of 74,345 admissions, which the film will surpass by next weekend the very latest.

The top opener, 'Allegiant', had a lower opening than 'Insurgent' (even when factoring in Monday's grosses) but higher than the original 'Divergent'. 'Panda 3' actually earned more than 'Allegiant' on Monday, as expected for an animated film. All other openers were truly disappointing with only two others making it into the Top 10 (at #9 and #10).

Among other holdovers, 'Spotlight' had a rather meh drop of 39% and crossed 50,000 admissions, as did 'Gods of Egypt'. 'Deadpool' crossed 200,000 admissions, the second film to do so this year after 'The Revenant'. It is the biggest Marvel film released by Fox and is only days away from surpassing 'Iron Man 3' to become the biggest Marvel film outside the two Avengers and the original Spider-Man trilogy. Definitely not an outcome I expected. 'Loreak' had a minor drop and it very positive word-of-mouth. I'll refrain though from praising it too much since its survival depends on how many screens it will lose next weekend, which sees the release of eight new films.

'Kung Fu Panda 3' had a solid performance this weekend, grabbing first place with an opening significantly higher than its predecessor (27K admissions) and only slightly lower than the original 'Panda' film (38.6K admisisons). Including the previews it has already surpassed 50K admissions and will undoubtedly reach 100K admissions. The original had a 5.2x multiplier, with a final total of 200,600 admissions, while the second one had a 4.1x mulitplier, with a final total of 110,185 admissions. Even if its mulitplier is as low as 'Panda 2', it can still reach 150K admisisons, and given the approaching national holiday on the 25th March with schools closed on both the 24th and 25th, a 4x mulitplier is a foregone conclusion. A similar fate is awaiting 'Zootopia', which is also headed for around 150K admissions. The race between them will be close. In the meantime, 'London Has Fallen' has been outpacing 'Zootopia', since it has been selling enough admissions on non-holiday weekdays to make up for the difference by which 'Zootopia' has been leading on weekends.

Among newcomers, no other movie - apart from 'Panda 3' - really impressed and some ('Pride and Prejudice and Zombies', 'Ein Atem') were complete disappointments, even when considering their per-theater average (1,111 admissions from 16 theaters and 1,192 admissions from 17 theaters respectively). 'The Finest Hours' and 'The Lady in the Van' played in a similar number of theaters (18 and 15 respectively) yet they earned much much more. The best per-theater average, though, was achieved by 'Krigen', which only played in 7 theaters.

'Allegiant' had a significantly better drop than its predecessor (and on par with the original) but it is trailing it by about 14K admissions. Holdovers generally performed well, with none dropping more than 42%. 'Spotlight' and 'Gods of Egypt' are nearing the end of their mediocre runs and 'Deadpool' is moving ever closer to 'Age of Ultron'. However, it remains questionable whether the next weekend's holiday will boost the above films since 'Batman vs Superman' is opening this Thursday. Based on past 'Batman' and 'Superman' film performance, this one should be happy to match the opening of 'Deadpool', although, given that this weekend is a holiday, it will probably go slightly higher.

Wow. Gods of Egypt was such a huge hit here. Panda made about the same on OW. Matching Deadpool on OW would be pretty good right?

I wouldn't call Gods of Egypt a "huge hit" but it was decent I guess.

What do you mean by "Panda made about the same on OW"? Are you referring to the first movie?

I think matching Deadpool would be pretty good although it should really come closer to 100K admissions, being Batman vs Superman.

In both cases I meant here as in in my country. I tend to do this comparison since a lot of movies make similar numbers in Romania and Greece. Gods of Egypt opened with over 70.000 adm here and will easily finish over 200.000. KFP3 just debuted with 43.000. And BvS will probably do around 70.000 here this weekend, but has no chance of even coming close to Deadpool's 118.000 adm opening.

Interesting article about the Greek hits of the last 15 years: http://www.kathimerini.gr/851782/article/politismos/kinhmatografos/h-timh-toy-ellhnikoy-sinema

The numbers may differ slightly from the ones I've posted on the first page. Which source is right, I cannot know.

The report mentions that 'A Touch of Spice' (1.3 million) is the biggest Greek film ever with a claim to second place shared between 'Loufa kai Parallagi: Seirines sto Aigaio' and 'Safe Sex' (~1.2 million).

Non-Greek films we know for sure reached 1 million admissions are 'Titanic' (~1.9 million) and '300' (1,210,022).

The article also reports that 'Brides' sold ~680K admissions, which means that 'Worlds Apart' has not surpassed it.

Batman v Superman sold 122,000 admissions for the biggest opening of the year and possibly the biggest 4-day superhero opening ever!!! (can't confirm since I don't have numbers from Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3). More to come soon...

It was exactly three months ago (24-27/12/2015) that 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' exploded on the scene with 137,000 admissions. Just as unexpectedly (then again, maybe not so much), 'Batman v Superman' owned this frame with a stellar opening from a probably record-breaking 208 screens (!). The most I've seen before is around 160. It should be able to reach 300,000 admissions although the mediocre word-of-mouth and the negative reviews could hold it back significantly. Don't forget that it was also a holiday weekend, so the drop will be quite big next weekend. The opening day mustered up 34,735 admissions, a number that was not matched by any of the following three days, which indicates at least some frontloadedness. Overall, it was the second biggest superhero opening ever, which is nevertheless an impressive result. It reaffirms that Batman is Greece's second most popular superhero after Spider-Man. It will be interesting to see if the inclusion of Spider-Man in 'Captain America: Civil War' will improve its performance at all. It would be wise if they included him in the marketing - at least in Greece - although the reboot has been a complete disappointment. These are the superhero openings above 60,000 admissions:

Superhero openings and totals
Rank Title Opening weekend Total
1 Spider-Man 3 159,000 366,987
2 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 122,428 -
3 Spider-Man 2 100,000* 385,700
4 The Dark Knight 100,000 339,520
5 Avengers: Age of Ultron 94,250 224,334
6 Deadpool 77,774 217,088**
7 The Avengers 75,755 242,565
8 The Dark Knight Rises 74,530 346,585
9 Iron Man 3 66,278 206,006
10 Iron Man 61,400 146,800
11 Iron Man 2 61,080 150,000

*This is my estimate for the 4-day weekend (Thu-to-Sun). The 5-day opening (Wed-to-Sun) was officially 127,500 admissions and the 3-day weekend (Fri-to-Sun) was around 82,000 admissions.

**Still in theaters.

Other notes: 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' may have also earned more than 60,000 admissions. The Athens number is 43,193 admissions. There are no numbers for 'Spider-Man' (2002), but I can only assume it opened significantly higher than 60,000 admissions, given the performance of its sequels.

'Kung Fu Panda 3' and 'Zootopia' also expectedly retained their audiences and it looks like a close race between them for the biggest final tally. 'London Has Fallen', in the meantime, has consistently out-grossed 'Zootopia' during weekdays and by a significant enough margin to compensate for the better performance of 'Zootopia' on weekends. The gap is closing though and this trend should continue. As expected, all non-animated films dropped hard. 'Allegiant' will most likely fail to surpass the total admissions of 'Insurgent' (61,171), while Best Picture-winner 'Spotlight' has come near the end of its run with a disappointing 70,000-admission total. Not much news below the Top 10, except that films dropped precipitously in the presence of BvS. Other newcomers were almost non-existent, but they were limited releases anyway.

It'll be very hard to reach 300.000 even with good WOM. The weekend was heavily inflated by the national holiday. No one worked on friday and all schools were closed. But even over 250.000 will be more than great. Only Raimi's Spiderman trilogy and the last two Batmans went over that.

Taking into account the following:

  • No significant competition in the coming weeks
  • If it returns to drops of less than 50% by its third weekend (since the 2nd is almost guaranteed to drop much more than 50%)
  • If it makes more than 150,000 admissions in its first 7 days
  • The WOM was mediocre in US but if this doesn't transmit to Greece

It could still inch past 300,000 admissions.

I agree though that it will be an uphill battle.
