Sorry for being late. No big surprises this week. The box office was quite boring. Disney live-action reached a new low with 'The BFG', which was made worse by the fact that the film wasn't dubbed, depsite being a film targeting families and children. The opening was even lower than 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' from last month. That's three disappointing openings in three months, when taking 'The Jungle Book' into account. 'Money Monster' had a decent debut, but lower than 'Florence Foster Jenkins' and not all interesting or impressive. The rest of the lot dropped more than 50%, with the two sophomores dropping the worst. 'Angry Birds' is still trying to drag its way to 100K admissions but it will need to sustain small drops for quite a few more weekends.

Another quiet weekend passed by without any notable developments. Total admissions were on par with last year. All holdovers remained in free-fall mode (most dropped by more than 50%) while openers only managed to reach the Top 10 because of the market's dire state. The Euro cup final definitely had its impact on Sunday, although I doubt it could have made that big a difference for a film like 'Independence Day 2', which I believe would have dropped hard anyway. It still seems weird to me that 'Florence' hasn't had one decent drop – I guess that's how bad the effect of the Greek summer is on moviegoing. Frontrunner 'The Legend of Tarzan' may seem to have performed decently but it earned only slightly more than 'BFG's opening and less than 'The Jungle Book' – neither of them being a sort of film you would wanna be compared with.

Next week comes the fifth (!) 'Ice Age' film. It is the only animated fivequel in recent memory (possibly ever) and by the looks of it, the odds are not in its favour. Its predecessor dropped 20% from the third one, which dropped by about the same percentage from the second. The second 'Ice Age' seems to be the most attended animated film on record (since 2003) although I have only been able to find its admission count in Athens, when it dropped out of the Top 10 (213,300). A similar drop for 'Ice Age 5' would lead to 240-245K admissions, but I believe it will go even lower – reaching 200K admissions will be tough.

'Ice Age 5' managed to retain the majority of the audience of its predecessor on what was a very solid weekend that ranks as the 10th largest opening weekend among animated films (since 2003). It is however the lowest opening weekend for an 'Ice Age' sequel – there are no data for the original one. There is very little precedent for an animated film opening in July – only the best of the best would ever dare open on this extremely quiet month for the box office – but the most appropriate comparison is its predecessor which opened in early July, 4 years ago. That film managed a 4.5x mulitple. It actually dropped around 50% or more on its first four weekends but then showed ridiculous staying power through August, September and October (despite the release of 'Madagascar 3' and 'Brave'). This time we may see a similar pattern but I'm making a (probably wrong) prediction that it won't exceed 250,000 admissions. Just last week, I said it will be tough for the film to reach 200,000 admissions, but with a mere 11% drop from its predecessor on opening weekend, that prediction has gone down the drain.

Biggest animated openings (and their totals)
Title Opening weekend Release date Total Multiple
1 Ice Age: The Meltdown 93,000 06/04/06 335,000-345,000 3.66
2 Minions 91,770 24/09/15 290,513 3.17
3 Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 80,337 29/06/09 381,097 4.74
4 Tangled 77,247 06/01/11 232,500 3.01
5 A Christmas Carol 72,323 24/12/09 175,456 2.43
6 The Smurfs 71,600 08/09/11 283,010 3.95
7 Ratatouille 68,000-70,000 27/09/07 312,019 4.52
8 Ice Age: Continental Drift 67,836 05/07/12 305,445 4.50
9 Inside Out 62,766 03/09/15 310,104 4.94
10 Ice Age: Collision Course 60,312 14/07/16

In the meantime, the Top 3 holdovers did horrid business while the rest of the pack held very well. 'The Conjuring 2' and 'Now You See Me 2' have retained a sizeable chunk of their predecessor's corresponding gross (more than 70%, with the prior approaching 80%), which is definitely a respectable feat. 'Independence Day 2' and 'Florence' had their first good holds, after weeks of free fall, but that will do nothing to save their disappointing totals. Finally, a French and an Italian film managed to make some waves, with very good averages. We'll see if they can hold on for the next few weeks, which – just like the weather – are expected to be very dry.

Another quiet summer weekend where another 'Ice Age' sequel monopolizes cinematic audiences. The fifth instalment of the franch-ice dropped big though, in a similar manner to its predecessor, which fell 50%. That film still had a larger weekend by 16% and a larger 11-day total by 13%. If 'Collision Course' follows 'Continental Drift's trajectory from now on, it will earn 260K admissions. In the meantime, 'Un homme à la hauteur' managed to be the top new opener this week, even outrunning 'Star Trek Beyond', which opened on more than double the screens (32 vs 75). The threequel posted the lowest debut of the series as yet, with 'Into Darkness' selling 11,275 admissions on opening weekend (~30K-admission total), a number less than half of the series original 'Star Trek's 25,070-admission opening (~50K-admission total). I assume the series was dead anyway, otherwise they wouldn't risk opening it in the middle of the summer (and one week after an 'Ice Age' sequel). 'Our Kind of Traitor' also did really well from just 15 screens, almost beating 'Star Trek Beyond' and way ahead of 'The Shallows' (50 screens). Finally, 'Bone Tomahawk' and 'Babettes Gæstebud' (1,560 admissions at #11), both did really well from just 3 screeens. As usual, holdovers crumbled to the ground, with the exception of 'A Hologram for the King' which had a very light drop, although its total is not expected to reach any respectable level.

This is the 8th consecutive weekend (essentially since the start of June) that had a higher admission total compared to last year. My estimates put this year's lead at 5.3% and it is in good shape to retain this lead or, in the worst-case scenario, end up around the same admission levels as 2015.

New films released this weekend:

  • Cien años de perdón [Spanish–Argentinian]
  • Bad Moms
  • Maggie's Plan
  • Ghostbusters
  • Quo Vado? [Italian]
  • Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter [German–Austrian]
  • Funny Face
  • Brzezina [Polish]
  • Father's Little Dividend

With 'Ghostbusters' being the only (still unlikely) contender for first place, I see a threepeat for 'Collision Course'.

During another dismal weekend, the 'Ice Age' franchise demonstrated that it hasn't (yet?) become a frozen fossil in Greece – in contrast to nearly every other country in the world. However, it did experience another precipitous fall despite retaining the weekend's top spot. Its third weekend is 39% smaller than its predecessor's and its total is 17% behind. Based on its predecssor's trajectory from week 3 onwards, 'Collision Course' may reach 227,000 admissions, but it looks like it will be far more frontloaded – at least until everyone returns from their holidays in end-August, but by then 'The Secret Life of Pets' (August 18) and 'Finding Dory' (September 1) will have arrived. The second biggest film of the weekend was more of a surprise; beating its American competitors, the Italian record-breaker achieved a decent debut (let's not forget it's late July) from only 13 screens. The third and fourth-place finishers were equally satisfactory, showing on only 15 and 14 screens respectively. 'Ghostbusters' and 'Bad Moms', on ther other hand, were totally embarassing, earning about 5K admissions each from 45 and 27 screens respectively. What is really helping the non-American films do so well is the large number of summer (outdoor) cinemas, to which audiences are drawn by nostalgia and, of course, the cooler evenings, that make the experience much more pleasant (after a day of exhausting heat).

As for holdovers, none of them really managed to stick around, with the average drop being about 60%. I'd never thought I would say this before, but I want September to come quickly (the box office is so boring).

New films released this weekend:

  • Me Before You
  • Storia d'amore [Italian]
  • A Bigger Splash [English-language Italian–French]
  • Eye in the Sky
  • All Roads Lead to Rome

I'm betting 'Me Before You' tops the weekend but don't expect much more than 10K admissions.

I finally made a reasonably accurate prediction for once (not bragging at all, as you can see), since 'Me Before You' did come on top and finished with slightly more than 11K admissions. It really isn't an opening to wish for, but the film could benefit from word of mouth if it manages to survive the torrent of new releases flooding theaters over the next two weeks. Most impressively, Italian comedy 'Quo Vado?' achieved a minuscule drop of which the likes we haven't seen all summer with the exception of 'Nice Guys' and even that film plummeted 82% on its third weekend (after losing 60% of its screens). I'm hoping for a more interesting run for 'Quo Vado?' although it is quite unlikely. The 'Ice Age' franchise has definitely reached a new low as the fourth sequel has shown little recovery from its previous weekends of free fall. Its fourth weekend is half that of its predecessor and, even if it follows 'Continetnal Drift's trajectory from now on (very generous projection), it will only make it to about 218K admissions. I have started feeling that my initial 200K-admission prediction was actually quite accurate!

Other newcomers were not particularly notable, although 'A Bigger Splash' and 'Storia d'amore' both achieved per-screen averages above 500 admissions. Holdovers also dropped significanlty, although there were some drops of less than 50%. Next week will see 9 new entries (including 2 re-releases) so expect a bloodbath.

This weekend seems to be the get-rid-of-all-these-foreign-films-that-no-one-is-gonna-watch weekend. I forgot to say earlier, but this Monday is a religious holiday in Greece (Dormition of the Virgin Mary). If it wasn't enough that August is a pretty slow month for the box office anyway, this three-day weekend everyone is guaranteed to be at some beach or visting relatives at their villages so expect box office receipts to plunge. I'm still not sure it can beat the yearly low of 20K admissions observed on Easter weekend, but it should get close, probably somewhere around last year's 33K admissions.

So how is Quo Vado going in Greece?

It had a great hold last weekend. As for this weekend, unfortunately we may have to wait til Tuesday for any news, since Monday is a public holiday. I won't rule out a first-place finish since no new films are likely to open big and 'Me Before You' could drop more than 'Quo Vado?'.

Sorry for posting last weekend's results late. As expected, this weekend was the lowest of the summer, with 44K admissions, and the second lowest of the year, after Easter's dismal 20.5K-admission total. Monday's holiday did nothing to reverse that trend, although I don't have enough information from previous summer Mondays to tell if this holiday made it worse or not. 'Quo Vado?' made it to the top this week! In the past year, we had 'Worlds Apart' open at #1 and then return to #1 on its 4th weekend, while 'Nice Guys' reached #1 only on its 2nd weekend. 'Quo Vado?' has definitely shown impressive holding power (undoubtably due to word of mouth) and has been incresing its screen count (from 13 to 20 to 24 screens) so far. I would remain fairly confident that it will have a long run, but there are so many new films coming out this weekend that I wouldn't be surprised if its distributor removed it from theaters to accommodate for whatever random flick they naively bought the rights to.

'Ice Age' finally had a decent hold, although the arrival of 'Secret Life of Pets' next weekend is likely to result in some collateral damage. In general, the holdovers either did horribly or very very well, but in any case, their totals are too disappointing for me to devote more than one line in this post. Same for this week's openers: completely boring, I have nothing to say.

Next week, expect 'Secret Life of Pets' to make some waves, although the degree of that is debatable as summer holidays are still in full force and 'Finding Dory' is coming out in two weeks.

'Pets' confirmed once more that its tremendous appeal is cross-cultural and near... universal (pun intended). Russia was the prime example that Eastern Europe would devour this film, but Greece has now provided further evidence of this trend. 'Pets' posted the second biggest animated weekend of 2016, only behind 'Ice Age 5', and higher than known brands such as 'Kung Fu Panda 3' and 'Angry Birds'. Of course, the opening is not exceptional for an animated film (ranks somewhere in the Top 30, but lower than #20). For a film opening in mid-August, though, the opening was satisfactory. It now hopes to garner as much box office gold as possible before 'Dory' strikes in one-and-a-half weeks. Regarding other newcomers, 'Queen of the Desert' achieved nothing particularly notable but it did finish ahead of the rest of the pack. 'Anime nere' achieved an 800+ admission screen average, besting all new movies.

As for holdovers, there were very decent holds across the board – not a surprise since last weekend hit rock bottom. 'Quo Vado?' continued its sensational run, significantly buoyed by the open-space summer theaters that sprout all around Greece, and has now surpassed 50K admissions. It remains to be seen if the Italian record-breaker can make it to 100K (very unlikely), but even having reached this far was totally unforeseeable. Well done. Other holdovers also held decently, with 'Ice Age 5' being a big exception. No doubt 'Pets' ate into its audience. If the fivequel follows its predecessor's trajectory (unlikely with 'Dory' in the horizon), it could reach 213K admissions, but every weekend the estimate falls lower and lower so don't hope for much.

New film released this weekend:

  • Suicide Squad
  • Mechanic: Ressurection
  • The Whole Truth
  • Café Society

Re-releases:

  • Death on the Nile
  • The Last Emperor [Chinese–British–Italian]

I expect 'SLOP' to remain in top with a small drop, before it gets obliterated next week by 'Dory'. Comparing to 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Ant-Man', I would expect 'Suicide Squad' to open around 20K admissions. However, I will give it an unlikely upper limit of 40K admissions, just because of the appeal this has had in many regions of the world at a signifcantly higher level than either of the previous two films I mentioned.

DC surprised once more this year, delivering the 11th biggest superhero opening (since 2003) and the 4th biggest for 2016. I think the film exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. It seems like DC is generally more popular in Greece, whereas Marvel has made quite an effort to expand its fan base, with mixed results. The MCU hasn't managed to open an original film higher than 'Suicide Squad', although 'Iron Man' opened to 61,400 admissions back in 2008. The only other original superhero film to have opened higher is 'Deadpool' (77,774 admissions), although I bet the first 'Spider-Man', for which we do not have any data, also opened higher than 'Suicide Squad'. It could just be that the marketing is better too – I won't rule that out. This opening is also the biggest opening for a DC film not featuring Batman. Its opening day brought in about 24K viewers, a much higher proportion of the weekend total than either 'BvS' or 'Civil War'. [UPDATE 2: Each day's tally dropped from the previous day – even Saturday] so I imagine this can't be good for the long-term prospects of the film, combined with the presumably mediocre word of mouth.

Then we had 'Café Society' earn second place and push last weekend's champion, 'Secret Life of Pets', to third place. The success can definitely be attributed to Woody Allen's popularity, to some extent, although a success of this magnitude was enabled by the good timing, since everyone is slowly returning back from their vacation and and indulging in their routine habits. I can't say I saw this coming in any way though... The film has potential to reach 100K admissions, but I am not aware about possible competition in the coming weeks. Last but not least, it achieved a 777-admission screen average, which we definitely haven't seen in a long time.

'Pets' dropped very little and under other circumstances, I would definitely expect a film like this to reach 200K admissions, although with the numbing effect of 'Dory', which arrives next weekend, anything can happen. Similarly with 'Ice Age 5'; after weeks of big drops, it finally stabilised in the past couple of weeks and now even increased, although whether that trajectory can be maintained is under severe doubt. 'Quo Vado?', on the other hand, has genuinely exceeded every expectation and I don't think it will slow down abruptly over the next few weeks. I still think 100K admissions is a bit too far away but there is no doubt that it has already been a huge sleeper hit.

'The Whole Truth' and 'Death on the Nile' both had respectable screen averages, whereas 'Mechanic 2' struggled significantly and actually opened lower than its predecessor (14,196 admissions in January 2011). 'Anime nere' and 'Me Before You' both found themselves in the Top 10, merely because of too many big drops across the board, but otherwise their totals are nothing to celebrate.

Can't wait for 'Dory', which arrives this Friday. I have literally been waiting for this moment all year. Anything lower than 350K admissions for me will be a disappointment and I think it is about a time an animated film crossed 400K admissions. The current record-holder is 'Ice Age 3' (381K admissions), followed by 'Ice Age 2' (350-360K admissions) and 'Finding Nemo' (334K admissions – up to 362K when including the 3D re-release). In the absence of an unlikely newsflash with 'Dory's opening day tally or a dollar figure for the opening weekend from Deadline, I will be back next Monday for the usual weekend results.

[UPDATE: With 2/3rds of the year behind us, 2016 has a comfortable lead of about 7.9% over the first 8 months of 2015 (when comparing only weekend admissions). I can see this lead being sustained through the rest of the year even if it potentially narrows by the year's end. Interestingly, we haven't seen cumulative weekend admissions as high as this one's (158,170) since late March, when DC's own 'BvS' opened (total weekend admissions were 208,613).]

How is Dory tracking in Greece?

I don't really have the time to track presales so I can't say. I also doubt they would indicate anything relevant for an animated film in a country where walk-ups make up a huge amount of the business. @Joel M do u have any input?
