The way inflation is measured is just raw. To find the real equivalent you need to take into consideration many more angles, and way more data, from simple things like the compared size of the according market (quantity), to more complex ones like purchasing power in relation to other nations.

Theoretically, the longer you go back, the less complex the market looks, making the raw translation to today's value huge.

For example, the Dutch East India Company would be worth like 8 trillion if it existed today, in raw conversions.

I know we've had a couple spats in the past LE, but god are you a breath of fresh air around these parts.

What blockbusters are filming right now?

Top Gun, Terminator, WW84, SM:FFH, Dark Phoenix, Avatar, EP9. Did I miss any?

I think its most likely Dark Phoenix if it is at all true

So it could be a nostalgia movie, dceu movie, mcu movie, fox-men movie, Cameron movie, or star wars movie. No fan-base is safe.

Clearly Dora the Explorer should not be left out of this discussion.

This method ignores the existence of a market outside of the US...

No it doen't, all incomes are transferred to the parent company and converted to USD in the same year.

Exchange rates and other markets inflation do not need to be taken into account because they already have been.

The only thing that needs to be calculated is the compound US inflation rate.

GwtW made $400m the vast majority of it in 1939, in todays money that is $3.6bn,

Thats why every place you will look will put GwtW as the highest grossing movie of all time (inflation adjusted).

If its any consolation, GwtW is an outlier for its time.

Yes if we would be trying to find a real equivalent it would be really hard.

We were just talking about which movie made more money, going for much much simpler.

One could easily made an argument about being more impressive to do has much money 70 year,s ago because there was less people and less market to do it from, etc.... and if one would be ranking movie popularity would need to go through the exercise (and if he didn't had ticket admission but box office would need to look at individual market exchange rate and individual market inflation or individual market movie theater ticket inflation, etc.....)

The real answer we want to know is which movie was the most successful, the problem is it's hard to measure things from different era.

Titanic vs Gone with the Wind? Which is more impressive?

The population of America was much less when Gone With the Wind was released, ticket prices were different comparatively to dollar strength. Gone with the Wind was in a time before home video, the only way to rewatch would be go to the cinema again and to re-release the film. Also cinema could have been far more popular at one time than the other, making it numbers less or more impressive.

It's so tricky almost to the point of making trying to compare them pointless.

It's best just to compare films of the same era against each other.

It really is, thus my objection that it was clearly objective. It is not even easy to say which made more money between the 2, imagine talk about more successful, we would need to wait for Titanic to be 50-75 year's old probably to have a good vision, Gone With the Wind still being the favorite movie of Americans more than 70 year's after release and still selling well is quite impressive.

Yeah because comparing films of the same era would not be 100% pointless and not just for an 100% useless waste of time to do so ?

No, in first release, gwtw made $221m inflation adjusted. Bom don't show every re release.

Much like with Star Wars and other old movies, Box Office Mojo doesn't do a great job in breaking it down domestically (and for foreign re-releases it's even more difficult.)

I think its most likely Dark Phoenix if it is at all true

They're probably talking about MIB (the Men in Black reboot).  It's had bad buzz as the sequel that nobody demanded, and remakes in general tend fail a lot more often than they succeed.

Other movies that haven't been mentioned yet, from most to least likely:

It: Chapter 2 or Maleficent II - Both have been filming for a few months, but I haven't heard reports of any problems.

Mulan - Started filming little over a week ago, way too soon to call "shaping up" to be anything.

Lion King - Not sure if this is still filming.

Frozen 2 - Not sure if this has started filming, and does it count as "filming" since it's animated?

Hobbs & Shaw (Fast & Furious spinoff): Doesn't start filming until September, and it's the other Fast & Furious sequel that has the bad buzz.

Avengers 4 - Reshoots don't start until September, and although I think firing James Gunn will be a mistake for Disney in the long run, it's both too late and too soon for this movie to feel the effects.  Unless Drax was going to have a much larger role than anyone's been letting on ...

Is it usually big budget blockbuster that announce the current filming state and the rest of films keep it hidden?
