I suspect cast availability was the main reason. WB does have a habit of shooting films 18 months to 2 years before release like Tarzan, BvS, Edge of Tomorrow etc or in the case of Jungle Books: Origins it'll be three years.

Gary Ross is a solid director and I wouldn't be surprised if Soderbergh ends up second unit directing like he did on The Hunger Games.

Yeah I read up on it.  It's not totally shocking...Soderbergh has played second unit on movies.  Just...did not know...mind slightly blown.

Soderbergh helped Ross for the Reaping scenes because Ross has never done scenes with that much of extras, he worked on THFG for about a week I think.
