How good would TFA need to be to live up to the hype?

Recommended Posts

So you're saying fanboys are less politically active/aware than the average "grown up" who watches sports or reality shows?

Or are you saying the entire general public are distracted from complex and urgent issues?

Because if it's the latter then you have less of a problem with geeks and more of a problem with human nature and society in general.

Pegg examines the impact of SW craze and infantilization on his generation because it's prevalent in the generation X  but baby boomers actually started it (Lucas generation), what is called "nerdy pop culture" that is now Hollywood formulaic cash cow so saying "I'm a baby boomer and a SW fan so Pegg is wrong" is actually proving his point. Those pre-sales datas proves his point. Majority of people who felt the urge to scrap every advanced SW7 tickets are 34+.

Again you chose the generalizing. Nothing is 'proven', you have no idea how I see fandom and so on

I am aware about the 34y detail, correct would be: the average is ~ 34y old, not OVER 34y olds. Sloppy sloppy...

Btw, with so many family reunion / christmas.... ticket buys there is another reason for that too (as an additional reason): it's expensive to buy for the whole family, dad pays (especially with empty accounts via x-mas presents buys).

70% of ticket holders are men between the ages of 18 and 49....

= not the baby boomers! Baby boomers time ran out with the pill, means mid '60 = the youngest baby boomer is 50y, in the US the oldest are 70y old (not counting for my country).

Generation X, PARTLY o.K., but those don't know who really went to the cinemas then, who supported and who was against the movies and so on.

Still only a part of the buyers.

It's so simple to throw around terms and generalizing judgements, I do not see a proof for your reasonings, to me it looks like you pick a mosaic stone out of a picture, use a microspe to analyze it and conclude the whole picture out of it. Might work if the picture would be a uni-color 'picture', but as people aren't all the same = wrong conclusion as generalizing

Strangley the most 'geeks' / fanboys I know here are usually the ones still interested into helping out, the ones addicted to computer games (as in digital games) are the ones usually not interested in doing something active (according to my observations at the school I am working)

Not as general counting, but as in a stronger tendency....

Can't remember when was the last time I read such a strange construct of bias, is that typical for her/him, so I know if there is even any sense in discussing?

It has to bee good enough to make the GA role their eyes at those who will fight about whether the fandom wetdreams have been fulfilled or not.

There is a good chance this will happen.

There will be a massive amount of internet debate that probably won't have to do anything with how the GA reacts. If one hopes for a consensus among the internet fandom crowd - good luck.

It's the infantilization of society at work. Keeping people numb by maintaining them and indulging them into an artificial bubble of childhood nostalgia to never grow up and actually confront, challenge and tackle complex and real issues as an adult where things are not as black and white as their childhood fantasy. Jean Baudrillard described that phenomenon in his book "America" and SW's oral fixation by a whole generation of supposed adults is one of the culprits that crystallizes this global phenomenon. It annoys me to no end to see 30-45 grown-ups treating SW, a manichean Flash Gordon rip-off like the Alpha and Omega of moviemaking and storytelling. SW should be something you enjoy when you're young then move on to more complex material as you grow up but most never got past that phase and turn that into a religion kneeling into an arrested development. You will never relive the pure awe of being a child because you're not a child anymore, it will always be an ersatz, a taxidermist recreation, an artificial stimulus that lacked the genuine appreciation you once had but you're not exactly the same person anymore. Pursuing this "lost child awe" is a hopeless mirage like being stuck in Peter Pan syndrome longing for a Neverland that is no more.

It's interesting that Simon Pegg who is kind of a SW fanboy posterboy aptly described that phenomenon. What is vivid and imaginative about going back into something that was created in 1977? It's a regression to play in an old sandbox not an invitation to leap further into the unknown.

Dash seriously you need to shut the fuck up. Movies are made for entertainment and the majority of people that enjoyed star wars fans treat it as just entertainment. The fact that hard working adults who still enjoys Star Wars to this day actually annoys you is just really sad. The fact that you treat movies this seriously in which you use someone's film taste to judge that person really is quite pathetic and if anything just shows that you need to grow up and start learning to deal with real life issues. Jesus Christ Dash, get out a little.

Grown-ups that literally cling onto their childhood toys like it's the best thing that has ever happened to cinema while I got to put up with aggressive marketing for this childish nostalgia wankfest being shoved into my throat whenever I go to the mall and spams my mailbox when I got to check out my bank statement but it's me that have to fucking grow up? Seriously, I know you can spew some really ludicrous bullshit wrapped in a Joe Schmoe's anti-intellectual bro schtick but this has to take the fucking cake. Get the fuck out of my face online and go play with your Hasbros action figures made in China in "real life" with your hard earned cash if it's what adults are all supposed to do, right.

LOL, this is hilarious, you are the best hipster on this site. You're literally ranting about people's enjoyment over star wars, telling people they need to grow up and enjoy better movies whilst they get older, complaining about marketing (seriously wtf?). Movies are a form of entertainment, they aren't there to make people smarter, its called escapism. I mean WOW, you have it really hard Dash, it must be terrible seeing a star wars poster when you go to your local maul, or the spam in your mail box and those damn pop ups. People are literally starving around the world, getting shot daily but no-one has it as hard as you do they Dash? Your intellectual superiority is just such a burden on you that when you see people still getting excited for a Star Wars movie (a film you've probably and ironically already booked a ticket for) it just really cuts to the core. Maybe, just maybe you should let people enjoy what they want to enjoy, hows that? Its okay to disagree, and even place digs here and there, but the fact it actually annoys you just shows that there's seriously something wrong in your head. You frown upon adults playing with action toys or getting excited for this december but I'd argue a fully grown adult spending hours per day posting on a movie site is a much bigger time waste. Is that what we should all be doing then Dash? right?

Go out and socialise more, chill out a little and maybe get a girlfriend, it will do you good.

Is it wrong that I think both sides have an argument here? Dash is right about some people putting SW in an untouchable pedestal and never moving on as they grow up, but Jessie also has a point when he says that one shouldn't get so worked up over something like this.

Pedestal means putting something in a position where it's uncritically admired.

If I really put Star Wars on a pedestal I would love the prequels but instead I criticized the shit out of those movies.

I elevate the status of certain things (certain franchises, certain music, certain beliefs)  because they resonate with me and there's nothing wrong with that.

And you're the embodiment of this fact. If movies are so meaningless for you and just another corporate product to consume to escape your mundane existence, why the fuck are you spending any time on here and not going out to save people from starving (the argument that dumbs down every serious conversation to a rather fitting low)? So you like wasting your time here on something that isn't even worth a serious and adult conversation about Hollywood gearing and manufacturing its products to customers like the entire population are 10 years old snappers? You're even more of an idle lad then.

(And I'm not in a needy quest for validation, thank you friendly, I got past that adolescent phase of my life. One day, you will or not).

My reasoning of being on here is completely irrelevant, im not the one pretending to be some intellectual being and talking down to everyone for liking movies for what they are, entertainment. I own my own house, mortgage paid off, I have a great job in which I work taxing hours and whilst you treat movies like its a way of life and im the one that needs to get past the adolescent phase of my life? lol, think before you speak Dash, you're embarrassing yourself. You're a nerd that likes movies, don't pretend you're something else Dash.

How exactly do you define "growing up"?

Because if it's having a family/job/responsibilities, plenty of older Star Wars fans meet the criteria.

Having a family and a job are not signs of growing up. There are man children everywhere. People who fail to ever realise their social responsibilities never grow up.

Given your misogynistic and misanthropic attitude, I'd say, you have not grown up. You're petty, stuck in this cycle of the "bro", ultimately completely controlled by society's expectations of you. You are almost the perfect product of the failures of the system of governance. All you have to do is realise it and do something about it. Chances are you won't, given my experience of your posts, but there's always a first time. Assholes aren't above anything, they are stuck in a pathetic, self-affirming, delusional and hateful purgatory. Good luck.

What social responsibilities are you referring to?
