Snowpiercer | Now in Theaters and VOD

Not certain how all the financing went down. But, yeah, $86M WW on a $37M budget ain't all that bad. Did Harvey W. help finance or just pay for distribution rights in North America?

The bulk of the budget was financed by CJ Entertainment (a Korean company). Supposedly they licensed the movie to 167 territories (I have no idea how much they got in return for that). TWC acquired the English-language rights for a "seven figure amount" (which doesn't really help much) -- this means the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Sources: Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and press releases.

It was certainly profitable for Radius, maybe their most profitable movie - and more so than most if not all TWC releases this year but it most likely made far less for them than it would have with a traditional release. Also the almost year delay in the release probably cost them a nice chunk in DVD/Blu Ray sales since it was not only available elsewhere (Korea, Japan, Italy, Spain etc) but leaked online months ago.

I wonder what ever happened to that promised expansion in Australia?  It premiere to a huge PTA in two theaters and they said they were expanding and then it never showed up on any weekly chart.  And they still don't have a release date in the UK.  TWC really screwed over this movie.

It’s important to note that numbers for on-demand reportedly are calculated based on different time frames than theatrical, so updates aren’t available in the same way as weekly box office.

RADiUS’ Snowpiercer VOD cume for two months is now at $6.45M, while The One I Love, now in its 5th week on VOD is at $737K. Love also had a $104,610 theatrical gross this weekend ($1,453 PTA in 72 theaters) for a theatrical cume just over $309K.

Snowpiercer’s 11-week theatrical cume is now just over $4.5 million. Combining that with its VOD cume brings the title’s U.S. gross at $10,956,135, according to RADiUS-TWC. The film is directed by Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell.

overrated, though it was better on second viewing. It's amazing how low the budget was on this because those frozen city, boat shots were amazing. Goes to show how far CGI has gone in the last 10 years. Looked better than The Day After Tomorrows shots.

https://variety.com/2014/digital/news/apple-gets-two-week-exclusive-to-trip-to-italy-as-itunes-becomes-more-valuable-to-indie-filmmakers-1201377258/

This year, “Dallas Buyers Club” was the most purchased indie title on iTunes, according to Apple.

While the company doesn’t disclose specific numbers, the Matthew McConaughey vehicle topped “12 Years a Slave,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Snowpiercer,” “Chef,” “Blue Jasmine,” “Her,” “Enough Said,” “August: Osage County” and “Bad Words,” which rounded out the top 10.

Overall, “Snowpiercer” generated more than $8 million in sales from digital and VOD platforms, according to the Weinstein Co.’s Radius. Radius declined to break out just how much came from iTunes.

So far, its gross on iTunes is neck-and-neck with that of the comedy “Bachelorette,” Radius’ highest-grossing film on digital platforms, it said. “Bachelorette” was priced higher than “Snowpiercer,” meaning that the Evans vehicle generated more overall buys.

It's getting turned into a TV series. Josh Friedman is the showrunner. I'm stoked.

But not as stoked as he is.

I'm hoping HBO picks it up.
