Romania box office update (December 16th):

"Second Act" opens at no.1 and scores a nice $169K / 697K RON on OW.

"Racetime" underperforms, as it barely made $43K / 181K RON on its first weekend in Romanian theaters.

"The Grinch" still strong at no.2, now having grossed a total of $880K.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" sits more than comfortable at exactly $1.7M. Will end up as one of the highest grossing movies of 2018 in Romania.

"Creed II" is still in the top 10. The movie has currently grossed $584K.

"Robin Hood" continues its mediocre-to-decent run as the movie currently stands at $330K.

Other holdovers: Mortal Engines $293K, The Nutcracker $358K, Fantastic Beasts 2 $1.19M, Venom $2.467M.

Next weekend sees the release date of "Aquaman" and "Mary Poppins Returns".

While the DC movie is expected to have a huge OW, "Mary Poppins" might underperform. Curious to see how it all goes down.

Romania box office update (December 23rd):

"Aquaman" vastly OVERPERFORMS. The movie grossed an enormous $741K / 3.01M RON on OW, thus becoming the third highest OW of 2018 in Romania. (Behind "Avengers 3"s $826K and "Fifty Shades Freed"s $792K.). The movie outgrossed the opening weekends of both "Deadpool 2" ($648K) and "Venom" ($628K).

"Mary Poppins Returns", as expected, underperforms. The critically acclaimed movie barely makes it to no.4, grossing $44K / 179K RON on OW.

"The Grinch" will pass the $1M-mark next weekend. The movie currently stands at $987K.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" starts slowing down after scoring a huge haul of $1.75M.

"Creed II" still maintains its spot in the top 10. It made $613K to date, a very nice haul for this kind of movie.

Other holdovers: Second Act $289K, Robin Hood $398K, Mortal Engines $338K, Fantastic Beasts 2 $1.22M.

Next weekend sees the release date of "Bumblebee" and "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse"

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

Aquaman at 1.9 million USD, after opening on the 21st. Top movies of the year are Venom and Infinity War - around 2.5 million USD, I think (I believe the exchange rate was better for IW than for Venom - Venom is higher in local currency, but IW might be higher in USD). Andreas might be able to confirm.

So, in the top 3 after 10 days. Unless it completely collapses, it should fight it out for the top spot.

Either way, MCU, DCEU and SONY's Spiderman-adjacent universe for the top 3. Can't argue with the superhero love.

As reddevil19 has already mentioned, "Aquaman" has shown incredible legs and has grossed $1.9M to date. The movie has a big chance to outperform "Avengers: Infinity War"s final cume of $2.57M and thus to become the highest grossing movie of the year (+the highest grossing superhero movie of all time). It's true that "Venom" has grossed more than "Infinity War" in local currency (10.02M RON vs 9.98M RON).

While "Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse"s OW numbers weren't announced yet, "Bumblebee" has opened to a rock-solid $324K/$1.3M RON on OW.

Top 10 highest grossing OPENING WEEKENDS of 2018 in Romania:

1. "Avengers: Infinity War" - $826K.

2. "Fifty Shades Freed" - $792K.

3. "Aquaman" - $741K.

4. "Deadpool 2" - $648K.

5. "Venom" - $628K.

6. "Black Panther" - $565K.

7. "Fantastic Beasts 2" - $474K.

8. "Mission Impossible Fallout" - $467K.

9. "The Nun" - $454K.

10."Hotel Transylvania 3" - $402K.

Indeed a very good year for superhero movies in Romania.

I will post "SpiderVerse"s numbers as soon as they are available. Also, as soon as "Aquaman" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" will end their runs, I will also post the list of the highest grossing movies of 2018 (totals).

Happy New Year!!!

Romania box office update (January 6th):

"Aquaman"s outstanding legs got the movie to $2.77M. Thus, "Aquaman" becomes 2018's highest grossing movie, dethroning "Avengers: Infinity War", and the highest grossing superhero movie of all time. The movie is now the 4th highest grossing movie of all time in Romania, and has chances to outgross F8 ($3.17M) and SW7 ($3.25M) in order to become the second highest grossing movie of all time, behind "Avatar".

"Ralph Breaks the Internet" has a good opening, scoring $226K / 928K RON on OW.

"The Mule" made an ok $189K / 775K RON on OW.

"Holmes & Watson" follows behind, making $149K / 612K RON on OW. A bit more was expected from this movie.

"Bumblebee" sits at no. 5, now having made $640K. The highly-praised Transformers movie could pass the $1M-mark in Romania.

"Spider-Man:Into The SpiderVerse" has made $364K to date, a good haul for such an animated movie.

Other holdovers: Bohemian Rhapsody $1.93M, Second Act $633K, Mary Poppins Returns $258K, The Grinch $1.21M.

Next weekend sees the release date of "The Snow Queen: Mirrorlands" and "The Upside".

What do you except for each of the superhero movies in Romania this year 2019 to potentially gross in LC?

I would be suprised if ''Avengers: Endgame'' doesn't outgross ''Infinity War'', making more than $2.57M / 10M RON in LC.

The other superhero movies are coin-tosses. ''Captain Marvel'' and ''Spider-Man: Far From Home'' should make considerably more than $1M, possibly thus passing 5M RON in LC.

My other bold predictions are that ''Joker'' and ''Shazam'' will overperform while ''Dark Phoenix'' underperforms.

One more question and that will be it is I read that in the 90s post-communism era their were one or two films that had one million admissions in Romania because ticket prices were lower, but is it possible in a few years their could be a another film that has one million admissions in Romania?

Don't worry, you can ask anything at any time. I really like it when people are interested in Romania's box office :)

You're right, the two films you're referring to are "Titanic" (1.2M adm.) and the local comedy "A doua cadere a Constantinopolului" / "The second fall of Constantinople" (1.32M adm.).

"Avatar", which is by far the highest grossing movie in Romania, having grossed more than $5M, came very close to that mark. The movie got 878K adm. in Romania. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Fate of the Furious" have also accumulated more than 600K adm. So yes, the possibility of a movie getting to 1M adm. is very real.

December blockbusters are usually huge in Romania, so my current bet is on "Avatar 2".

Aquaman with yet another great hold. 3.21 million USD now. So, yeah, only Avatar ahead of it. Seems like WOM has been truly great - it's the kind of visual experience audiences love in Romania, so not surprised it's a hit, but the sheer size of it is unexpected...

Romania box office update (January 13th):

"Aquaman" swims to $3.21M and is now locked to become the second highest grossing movie in Romania, behind "Avatar".

"The Snow Queen: Mirrorlands" opens to $105K, while "The Upside" makes a slightly disappointing $85K on its first weekend in theatres.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" has now passed the $2M-mark AND has exceeded "Black Panther"s total haul of $2.01, sitting at $2.03M.

"Bumblebee" got to a nice $800K and looks likely to pass the $1M-mark.

Other holdovers: The Mule $361K, Ralph Breaks The Internet $424K, Holmes & Watson $242K, SpiderVerse $442K.

Next weekend sees the release date of "Glass", "Instant Family", "Asterix & Obelix:Le secret de la potion magique", "The House that Jack built" and "Papillon".

*LATE* Romania box office update (January 20th):

"Glass" has a solid opening, making $213K / 879K RON on OW. It opened at the top of the chart.

"Instant Family" opens at no. 3, making $134K / 553K RON. "Papillon" at no. 4 with $83K / 344K RON and "Asterix" opens at no. 6 scoring $69K / 285K RON on OW. "The House That Jack Built" bombs, scoring a mere $6K / 26K RON on OW.

"Aquaman" has officially become the second highest grossing movie of all time in Romania, being a scratch away from $3.5M ($3.496M). In order to pass "Avatar" and to become the highest grossing movie of all time, "Aquaman" would have to pass the $5M-mark, which seems pretty unrealistic. Yet, the $4M-mark is still in play.

"Ralph Breaks The Internet" breaks the $500K-mark, having grossed $507K to date.

Other holdovers: The Snow Queen:Mirrorlands $175K, Bumblebee $873K, The Mule $433K, Bohemian Rhapsody $2.09M.

Next weekend sees the release date of "A Dog's Way Home", "Destroyer" and "Mary Queen of Scots".

Romania box office update (January 27th):

"A Dog's Way Home" has a solid opening. The movie made $143K / 602K RON on its OW in Romania.

"Destroyer" and "Mary Queen of Scots" disappoint, opening at no. 5 with $76K / 323K RON and at no. 6 with $51K / 215K RON, respectively.

"Glass" shows great legs, as it banked $436K to date.

"Aquaman" made $3.644M up until now and sits at no. 4, ahead of "Destroyer" and "Mary Queen of Scots". Chances to pass the $4M-mark look pretty slim right now. Still, nothing to be ashamed of, considering "Aquaman"s enormous run.

"Instant Family" stays strong. The movie sits at $279K after its second weekend in theaters.

Other holdovers: Papillon $174K, Ralph Breaks The Internet $578K, Bohemian Rhapsody $2.139M.

Next weekend sees the release date of "How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World", "Escape Room" and "Serenity".

Besides superhero movies, what other blockbusters @Andreas do you expect to be big at the Romanian box office this year?

"Hobbs and Shaw" and "The Lion King" should be huge. The race to no.1 will likely take place between "Endgame" and "TLK".

"Star Wars IX" should have a nice run, but could underperform due to the poor reception "The Last Jedi" got.

I also expect "Godzilla 2" and "Frozen" to become big hits.

As a side note, are you Romanian? 😃

Romania box office update (February 3rd):

"How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" opens at number 1 and scores a solid $182K / 754K RON on OW.

"Escape Room" fails to outperform the animated movie but still manages to take $150K / 625K RON on its first weekend in theaters.

"Serenity" slightly disappoints, opening at number 4 and grossing $66K / 276K RON in three days.

"A Dog's Way Home" shows strength. The movie has great legs, thus the movie has made it to $245K after its second weekend in Romanian theaters.

"Aquaman", with its current haul of $3.726M, doesn't want to leave the top 10.

Other holdovers: Instant Family $370K, Glass $541K, Mary Queen of Scots $94K.

Next weekend sees the release date of "Drunk Parents", "The Prodigy" and "Mia and the White Lion"
