"Avengers: Endgame" has made it PAST THE $3M-mark after just three weekends in theatres. It's now way past IW's final haul ($2.55M) and past "Furious 7" (approx. $2.75M), sitting at a gargantuan $3.015M. "Fate of the Furious" (approx. $3.2M) and "The Force Awakens" (approx. $3.3M) are also sure to be surpassed by next week. The only question that remains is if EG can surpass "Aquaman" ($3.8M) in order to become the second highest grossing movie of all time in Romania (behind "Avatar").

at least 200k adm. ow/500k adm. total

Right now I really don't think it's possible for "Hobbs & Shaw" to become the biggest movie of the year.

"John Wick 3" had an awesome opening weekend, bringing in $296K / 1.26M RON in three days. JW3 far outopened its predecessors.

In other news, "Avengers: Endgame" has made it to $3.2M / 13.67M RON and will soon enough pass both "The Fate of the Furious" AND "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in order to become the third highest grossing movie of all time in Romania. "Aquaman"'s $3.8M-haul might be a stretch too big for EG.

Other holdovers: The Hustle $343K, UglyDolls $46K, Brightburn $103K.

UPDATE on Romania's box office:

"The Lion King" opens at number 1 and scores a hefty $411K / 1.73M RON on OW. Comps: "Toy Story 4" $83K, "Incredibles 2" $210K, "The Jungle Book" $375K, "Beauty and the Beast" $518K. The movie is well-liked and should have very solid legs.

After opening at number 1 and making $418K on its OW (comps AMATW $238K, SM:H $281K, Black Panther ~ $500K), "Spider-Man: Far From Home" passed the $1M-mark after this weekend, now having grossed $1.02M. Movie needs $9K more to outgross its predecessor.

Holdovers: Toy Story 4 $334K, MIB $592K, Annabelle $409K, Stuber $97K.

Romania box office UPDATE:

"Hobbs and Shaw" has a great opening, scoring $670K / 2.86M RON on its first weekend in Romanian theaters. It's not as good as F7 or F8, yet the movie should have solid legs and make it as far as it goes. $2M should be easy.

"The Lion King" has shown great legs and made it to $1.28M, while "Spider-Man: Far From Home" made it to $1.21M, now $200K ahead of "Homecoming".

Holdovers: Crawl $118K, Annabelle Comes Home $566K, Toy Story 4 $422K, Aladdin $1.157M.

Update:

Angel Has Fallen opens at no. 1 and makes $178K / 764K RON on OW. Impressive for this kind of movie. The Big Trip makes $48K.

OUATIH has a nice run in Romania, it opened with $212K and has now made $637K.

Even more impressive is The Lion King. The movie has proven to be very leggy, having grossed $1.82M. Could pass $2M in Romania.

As expected, Hobbs & Shaw surpassed the $2M-mark in Romania. Currently sits at $2.006M. Even though it's a F&F movie (which is perhaps the most popular franchise in Romania), it doesn't have any chance at getting close to recent blockbusters Aquaman and Avengers:Endgame.

Holdovers: Scary Stories $154K, Angry Birds 2 $507K, Good Boys $133K.

IT 2 opens on Friday. Expect a huge opening for a horror movie.

Romania Box Office Update:

"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" makes $684K / 2.938M RON on its OW. "The Last Jedi" made $767K / 3.01M RON on its OW. TROS' reception is better than TLJ's in Romania, so legs should be pretty solid. $1M+ guaranteed by next weekend.

"Jumanji: The Next Level", the sequel to one of the most successful movies in Romania, opened to $512K and has made it to over $1.2M.

Holdovers: Frozen II $2.43M (will become the highest grossing animation in Romania), Charlie's Angels $221K, Last Christmas $405K.

Romania New Year's update:

Local Youtuber-movie "5GANG: Un altfel de Craciun"/ "5GANG: Another Christmas" opens at no. 1, making $657K / 2.8M RON on OW. The movie is received very poorly, so legs should be pretty bad. Still, it's the biggest opening for a local movie.

"Spies in Disguise" opens weak at no. 5, making just $92K / 398K RON on OW.

"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" makes it to $1.36M after two weekends in cinemas, while "Frozen II" sits at $2.71M, becoming, by far, the highest grossing animated movie ever in Romania.

"Jumanji: The Next Level" also continues to impress. It currently sits at $1.72M.

Top 10 of the year in Romania (as expected, poor year given the many lockdowns - the market is still at less than half of what it was before the pandemic):

1. Fast & Furious 9 - $2.2m

2. Spiderman - $1.3m (Spidey just had a slightly bigger second week than FF9, but with Christmas holidays that is normal; the BO will collapse during New Years though, when everything is closed, so as it stands I think FF9 will remain the No. 1 in the end)

3. Dune - $1.02m

4. Luca - $1.05m (slightly above Dune in USD but under Dune in local currency - USD fluctuations)

5. No Time to Die - $933k

6. Venom 2 - $867k

7. House of Gucci - $842

8. Jungle Cruise - $720k

9. Shang-Chi - $699k

10. Black Widow - $688k

The surprises of the year were definitely Dune and especially House of Gucci (it is currently no. 7, but it has a good shot at beating No Time to Die to claim a place in the Top 5, which is outstanding).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, here is the The Top 10 all Time in Romania in terms of admissions (from 2000s onward - there are a few movies pre 2000s that made over 1m admissions, but the ticket prices are not comparable - the average ticket price in 1994 for example was 10 cents or so, compared to around $7 now):

1. Avatar - 881.718

2. Fast and Furious 8 - 683.878

3. Aquaman - 679.617

4. Frozen 2 - 655.140 (no exact data for this one, but a very close aproximation)

5. Furious 7 - 651.232

6. Avengers: Endgame - 621.725 (no exact data for this one, but a very close aproximation)

7. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 601.242

8. Joker - 531.407

9. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - 526.702

10. Miami Bici - 525.238 (local movie)

As it stands right now, the only titles that have even a remote chance of unseating Avatar as the most attended movie ever in Romania in the near future are Avatar 2 (maybeeee) and Aquaman 2 (if it's as good as the first one).

But tbh, I doubt the market will be back to normal by this time next year, when both those movies come out and they will canibalize each other lol (as it stands right now, they are set to debut on the same weekend which will likely ensure the biggest month in Romanian cinema history - it would also mean that any movie opening close to them will bomb),  so probably Avatar will reign supreme for the foreseeable future).

I'd say it's quite debatable if Romania is part of the Balkan region (especially here in Transylvania, where I'm from), but I'll let that slide :sparta:glad to see you around here.

Avatar: The Way of Water has reached $2.5M in Romania by Sunday the 25th.

This is a great result, considering that:

- School holidays mostly started on 26th December

- People here don't go to the movies AT ALL on Christmas Eve

Thus, the movie should make a lot of money this week and the next.

As of SUN, Avatar: The Way of Water has reached 21M RON ($4.53M) in Romania, on its way to becoming at least the second highest grossing movie of all time (behind only Avatar 1).

On its 3rd week in Romania, the movie has grossed $2.03M (+78% vs week 2. It made $1.14M during its 2nd week here).

This week should also see a pretty decent hold, since schools are still closed.

Highly doubtful, Romania is not known for very good legs. For now I'd say 30m RON max.

Apparently I was wrong, 35M RON do look doable right now.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" had another INCREDIBLE week in Romania.

It has grossed $1.6M during its 4th week.

As of SUN (08.01.2023), ATWOW has grossed 28.47M RON ($6.13M).

The movie has now become:

The highest grossing movie of all time in LC.

The second highest grossing movie in USD in Romania (after Avatar 1)

Avatar 1 has grossed $6.64M in Romania, ATWOW should be able to exceed that number and become the highest grossing movie of all time in USD in Romania.

EDIT: Not sure if $6.64M is Avatar 1's total after or before re-releases. Perhaps Charlie does have that information. In case it's the total for the original run only, $7M-$7.2M should be the number to beat for ATWOW in order to become no. 1 in USD.
