Top 10 grossing films per country (Excluding US/Canada)

Recommended Posts

I can never find accurate numbers for the top grossing films by country.  I'm sure there is a way to do it on Mojo, but I thought it would be a good thread to pin.

Can we (no rush, just do it casually) do a top ten of each country, of all time?

The only way I know how to do it on Mojo is to go year by year.

So if we could fill in the gaps, list country by country, I think it would be a really valuable thread.

If this thread is not needed or the information is readily available here, please let me know and I'll close it.

I can start with Mexico, as of 14/Apr/2024.

Spain (Euros)

1. Avatar (2009) €77,032,767

2. 8 Apellidos Vascos (2014) €55,348,927

3. The Impossible (2012) €42,408,547

4. Titanic (1998) €41,615,692

5. The Return of the King (2003) €32,933,303

6. The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) €31,332,601

7. 8 Apellidos Catalanes (2015) €31,000,000 (provisional. It is locked to land over Return of the King. I will update the list with final results)

8. The Two Towers (2002) €29,793,649

9. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 (2006) €28,272,305

10. Shrek 2 (2004) €28,207,541

It is quite probable that TFA can enter in the top 10, probably over ROTK, and fighting with 8 Apellidos Catalanes for being #5. Until last Sunday, €18.8m.

Great initiative, Baumer. There are data of every movie (quite accurate) in terms of admissions and gross. If someone wants to know a longer list of unadjusted figures or an adjusted figure list, just ask for it :)

Amazing how popular the LOTR films were in Spain. They were also extremely successful in Scandinavia and Germany iirc. Which is reasonable, since they are partly based on Nordic mythology and imagery.

LOTR is the most beloved and successful franchise here. The 3 films are in the top 11 adjusted:

1. Titanic - 11,265,694 admissions

2. Avatar - 9,536,218

According BOM, Titanic did $139m (129+10), so it would rank 4th in the dollars list. Anyway, does anyone know some place to see the euros grosses? The dollars list is a bit misleading because of variable exchange rates.

Oh, you edited it to Euro. I just wanted to comment on the Dollar-list you had posted earlier, more exactly on how funny the result for the Hobbit-movies were, with 1 and 2 being at pretty much the same amount of 88 million Dollars, with the third being nowhere in sight. Power of drastic changes in exchange-rates at work. Hobbit 2 and 3 were pretty much identical in terms of admissions and Euro, yet the Dollar-amounts are completely different due to the Euro tumbling down like crazy between the two movies.

I think it would actually be quite nice if both alltime lists, Euro and Dollar, would be mentioned here, makes it easier for reference.

I think Mark from insidekino had a tweet lately in which he mentioned that TFA had passed Spectre with now 64.7 million Euro. With the way those two are going, both should enter the top 10, with TFA probably heading for third.

According BOM, Titanic did $139m (129+10), so it would rank 4th in the dollars list. Anyway, does anyone know some place to see the euros grosses? The dollars list is a bit misleading because of variable exchange rates.

Well, that's odd, BOM's list doesn't have it...

United Kingdom (£) - as of 30/12/15

1 Skyfall - £102.9m ($152.0m)

2 Avatar - £94.0m ($138.9m)

3 Spectre - £92.0m* ($135.9m)

4 Star Wars: The Force Awakens - £83.5m* ($123.4m)

5 Titanic - £80.1m ($118.4m)

6 Toy Story 3 - £74.0m ($109.3m)

7 Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows Part 2 - £73.1m ($108.0m)

8 Mamma Mia - £68.5m ($101.2m)

9 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - £66.1m ($97.7m)

10 Jurassic World - £64.1m ($94.7m)

* Still playing.

I put dollars in brackets based on what it translates to with today's exchange rate, not what it was at the time of release. Bit depressing that only 6 months ago Jurassic World's gross translated to about $100m...

TFA locked to become #1, maybe even after this weekend.

It has the re-release in the list, but not the original start.

Maybe they didn't have the numbers for Titanic's opening weekend. That list is the top opening weekends after all, not the alltime chart, it's just that you can also sort these movies by their final gross. BOM only has French numbers going back to 2001, so the exact numbers for Titanic may not have been available to them. If that is the reason, it's obvious why Titanic wouldn't be on the list. Though it would seem a bit odd, considering that they have a few very old (and very minor) starts listed.

Well, that list shows the top openings ever in France ordered by final gross. Probably, BOM has not the opening data of Titanic so it is not included on the list.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&country=FR&id=titanic.htm

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&country=FR&id=titanic3d.htm

And according jpbox-office, average ticket price in 1998 was €5.38. Since Titanic sold 21 million tickets, that would give us about €113m, what fits with the $129m original run figure that BOM says.

Hi everyone! Long-time lurker but I love the idea of this thread and wanted to expand on it if possible. Personally, I've always been more interested in admissions numbers than grosses as I think it is a fairer way to compare films released more

than a few years apart.

Would it be possible, along with the top grossers, to post the top 10/20 (or even more if you have the info) films of all time in each region based on admissions? I have lists for North America, UK, France and Germany that are exhaustive and go right back to the 30s but I'd like to do the same for Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, China, Korea, Australia, Russia and so on if possible - I've seen data for the last few years for most of these regions but not much that goes right back to the likes of Jaws, ET, Ben Hur etc...
