Great list, thanks for that! A lot of big names missing - Gone with the Wind, Ten Commandments, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Snow White - guess they didn't make the top 150?

Snow White:2,602,288

Return of the Jedi:2,378,453

Gone with the Wind:1,059,135

Great, how about the early Bond films like Dr No, From Russia, Goldfinger, Thunderball, and other classics like Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Cleopatra? Is there a database anywhere that can be searched?

Everything is here: https://www.mecd.gob.es/bbddpeliculas/cargarFiltro.do?layout=bbddpeliculas&cache=init&language=es

It is in Spanish, but you can insert the title in English of the film in the box that says "Título". The searcher uses to find the film with the info of admissions (item called "Espectadores") and gross in euros (item called "Recaudación"). Concerning the films you ask for, I have not found any info about Thunderball, but the others are there.

And Dr. No is in the top 150.

One curiosity about Gone with the wind: I have read it was released in 1950 in just 2 theaters, one in Madrid and other one in Barcelona. It was released during 1 year and it was able to sell 1 million admissions. When the film was showed on TV by the first time in 1986, it was seen by 20 million people, more than half of the population in that moment.

When dealing with the biggest films over time, one has to make a vital distinction first. One metric is admissions, which focuses on the raw quantity of tickets sold. The second metric, is the real value generated by a film at the box-office in terms of constant currency (usually USD)

This is a very important distinction, because the real value of tickets has varied between both time and between films released at the same time.

One elementary error I find on BO websites, is the direct translation of admissions to the current average ticket price. This is highly misleading, because it blindly assumes that any movie from the past would have been able to sell the same number of tickets regardless of the real price.

To give a real world example, ticket prices in the 90s were much lower in real terms than they are today. Adjusting the grosses of Jurassic Park, The Lion King, Forrest Gump, ID4, Titanic etc based on admissions achieved then and subsequently multiplied by the current (higher in real terms) average ticket lies on the misguided assumption that these films would have managed to sell the exact same number of tickets even at higher prices. The result is of course an inflated adjusted number that exaggerates the success of films from previous eras.

it is an interesting discussion which I'm sure has been debated numerous times. Personally I think admissions is fairest - I went to see Jurassic Park back in 1993 and would have paid £3, I saw Jurassic World last summer and paid £10. I was happy to pay £10 since inflation would mean the £3 ticket in 93 would be worth about £7 in today's money anyway and we are all happier to pay extra nowadays for bigger screens, 3D, more comfortable chairs and so on. I don't think we are that price-sensitive.

I didn't want to see World three times as much as I did Park or think that my one viewing of World in 2015 is "equal to" three people viewing Park in '93 as would be assumed if just comparing raw gross - in my mind one admission is equal to another.

10 Jurassic World - £64.1m ($94.7m)

* Still playing.

I put dollars in brackets based on what it translates to with today's exchange rate, not what it was at the time of release. Bit depressing that only 6 months ago Jurassic World's gross translated to about $100m...

TFA locked to become #1, maybe even after this weekend.

Update 4th Jan 2016

Screen Daily (UK FILM TRADE PUBLICATION), state the following figures:-

1/ Skyfall £103.2 mil (i always thought it was £102.9 mil, but who am i to argue with the UK film trade)

2/ SWTFA £97.25 mil

3/ Spectre £94.25 mil (007 inches ahead of the blue people)

4/ Avatar £94 mil

Next weekend SWTFA will pass 007 to take top spot.

This is all really good stuff guys.  Thanks for helping out.

I'll update the first post from time to time with the page number that each country is on.

Really cool that the Impossible is so high on Spain's list.  Makes sense of course, but still pretty cool. And that French comedy at number one in France...huge numbers.

Do you have anything outside of the top 10? I'm guessing the Mexican market has grown significantly in the last few years given the titles in the top 10...

So i just checked out Star Wars TFA in yen and it's only at about 4 billion yen.  So it isn't doing well at all in Japan.  Probably won't crack the top 100.

And thank you for this.
