Highest Grossing Films in India (₹200 Crores ~ $30 million plus)

Note: There is no official box office tracking system yet in India so numbers may be slightly up or down from something you found on internet.

These numbers may look a little low considering the population of country, but that's to the fact that ticket prices are lower in India, as low as $0.5, with average rate at just about ₹125 or $1.75-2. The biggest among these 27 films, Baahubali: The Conclusion has admissions over 105 million, more than Star Wars: The Force Awakens in US but gross is just $209mn.

The biggest grosser adjusted for inflation in India is Sholay (1975) selling over 200 million tickets, with some estimates popping as high as 300 million. There are many others like Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Mother India (1957), Hum Aapke Hai Kaun (1994), Gadar (2001), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mukkadar Ka Sikander (1978), etc which have sold tickets more than 100 million.

In next two months, there are 3 films which can/will enter the top 5 including 2.0, Thugs of Hindostan and Zero.

Avengers: Infinity War and The Jungle Book are only Foreign films to gross over ₹200 crore in India.

In case you don't know, "crore" is Indian unit of counting equivalent to 10 million.

200cr.jpg

Unreal how big BB 2 was. When I went to see it in it's 3rd weekend, I though there will be few people. It was housefull. Hindi version being the biggest was a shock too. Clear example of a sequel getting big due to first film's home media, mainly television, success.

Where does that rank all-time? In USD I only see Titanic ($29.7m) and Skyfall ($25.1m) higher.

Although the next list is not a box office result, but shows the popularity of the movie

It was the biggest movie hit from the last 20 years since the Titanic.

Especially last year (in 2018): Top 4 movies were ALL LOCAL MOVIES (based on admissions) over there. In the year of Avenger: Infinity War/Mamma mia/Bohemian Rapsody/Jurassic World 2.

Good for them!

Insidekino.com did a big update in top.... per country in admissions since Avatar (as that was then the top movie in so many countries)

More countries will follow, actual are 33 countries presented

Its style of presentation is very broad/wide stretched, I think its not viewable for a lot of users, so maybe some want to take a look instead

Countries with an * behind the term 'Besucher' = only calculated out of average ticket prices (which movies are known for a high 3D part... you will know), the most do not have that sign.

Besucher = visitor(s) = admissions

You will see (partly rather often) this titles very high up or included:

Ziemlich beste Freunde = Intouchables aka Untouchable aka The Intouchables aka...

Ich - Einfach unverbesserlich 3 = Despicable Me 3

Die Unglaublichen 2 = Incredibles 2

I think the other titles based on English spoken origin should be self explanatory, local movies.. a bit too much for an intro? I check those at IMDb often, to see what the international, German or ... version might be

A little flag before the title = local movie

Überblockbuster: x Besucher = x means the admissions amount/count considered per country as an 'Ueber' blockbuster, only those reaching / surpassing that are listed

http://www.insidekino.com/BO/Avatar.htm

= a kind of modern days admission chart (and a few surprising titles that overtook Avatar in some countries)

Okkkaaayyy now he did the same for Titanic and what happened later. Means Avatar is also included, but it goes more into the past now, its for now for 27 countries

Forgot the 'Einwohner' line, directly under the county's flag: means inhabitants/population figure in the country the number is listed in

Example first named country = Germany the population figure is 83,1 Mio. Einwohner = 83.1m people living in Germany
