Four if you count the Star Wars hangover. Pretty good stuff.

Not to mention, it will be the first time ever three films hit $300m released from the first quarter of the year.

Shame Zoo wasn't able to get there first - oh well.... Incredible to think that we are going into Summer already having 3-300m grossers

It's not incredible that only 4 new releases have crossed $100 million.

There were 7 in 2015 and 8 in 2014. Not including holdovers and wide expansions.

eh, it comes and goes - some years we didn't have any until May.... and the # of 100m grossers doesn't make or break a year either as 2014 and 2015 would tell you. I would think that 4 (going on 5) before May is pretty average and unremarkable - not terrible, not great - just middle of the road.

2016 - 5 +1 film over 90m

2015 - 7 + 1 film over 90m

2014 - 8 + 2 films over 90m

2013 - 4 + 2 films over 95m - etc

2012 - 6

2011 - 5

2010 - 5

So yeah - nothing unusual about this year - other than 2014/15 showing us that the scheduling of blockbusters has started to shift in a way thats noticeable.

Well, to make up for that, no other year has even come close to touching 2016's record of FOUR 300M+ grossers released in the 1st Quarter (let's face it, TJB is pretty much locked for this). Most 1st Quarters struggle to get as much as a single 300M maker, 2016 got four of them. Not to mention that 2016 has over 100M more in DOM revenue than 2015 had up until this point, despite the much stronger number of 100M makers.

Someone does have a club involving this. It's played at the Smithsonian still. They may switch it out for the new Jennifer Lawrence documentary that's coming out in a week or 2 so it probably won't get to $100m.

If BvS has similar release pattern, it just might outgross TA1.

More top tier performers usually means less middle tier, hence less $100m grossers.

However The Revenant is basically a 2016 release, and TFA made over $250m of it's gross in 2016.

A Beautiful Planet is about to come out. Will it take over those theaters?
