2016 100M Films - 30 down, 6 to go! (Passengers Played The Long Game)

May-July will see kid focused movies grossing upwards of $1b combined DOM. I fail to see where there is room for another 100+ grosser in that market until mid August at the earliest, unless we were talking about a WDAS, Pixar, or Illumination release.

We shall see - obviously there is a first for everything but BlueSky has never had less than 107m as a gross across their 10 films - matter of fact outside of the ICE AGE films they are incredibly consistent in the 110-130 average range. I still think with the middle of July/Summer weekdays and what will at least be a decent opening (35m) it legs it to 100m. Obviously I can be wrong, been wrong a lot this summer.

The next ones absolutely 100% surefire not miss movies doing it should be Pets, Bourne and Suicide Squad. I guess 1-2 movies from September-October will do it as well (Storks and Magnificent Seven). November will give us Doctor Strange, Moana and Fantastic Beasts as surefire totally doing it with absolutely 100% no doubts and December only has Rogue One.

So we have 7 more for sure. Storks, Pete's Dragon, Magnificent Seven and Passengers seem to be the other contenders as well.

  1. ID:R
  2. BFG
  3. Pets
  4. Ghostbusters
  5. Star Trek Beyond
  6. Jason Bourne
  7. Ice Age
  8. Suicide Squad
  9. Fantastic Beast
  10. Moana
  11. Sully (Clint Eastwood+Tom Hanks)
  12. Magnificent 7
  13. Assassin's Creed
  14. Passengers (listed as "action?")
  15. Rogue One

2015 is not a record unless The Mechanic breaks out.

The difference I feel is release date. Angry Birds was surrounded by Jungle Book, Alice, TMNT, and Dory. For Storks, the last major kids movie will be Pete's Dragon, which likely won't be a huge moneymaker, and an entire month all to itself, outside of Miss Peregrine and Middle School, and neither seem like they'll cross $100M. Add in the studio's connection to Lego Movie, the next animated movie being in week 7, and the past success of other CG animated films in the same timeslot, and you've got something that seems destined for at least $100M.

I was kinda disappointed with Angry Birds' performance. It is one of the most downloaded games in history and it stalls at $327M WW. Those movies have different appeal: Jungle & Alice is  for traditionalist Disney fans and Turtles are for comic book fans. AB should have a wider appeal beyond Disney & comic book audience.

Conjuring 2, ID:R, Tarzan, Pets, Ghostbusters, Ice Age Collision, Star Trek Beyond, Jason Bourne, Suicide Squad would add to a combined total of 19 movies earning $100M or more in the period of Jan- August, matching 2015's 19. 2016 is not exactly doom and gloom. Don't Breathe, Pete's Dragon, Ben Hur may even break out.

You are right about Dr Strange.  I was thinking it was likely to be the lowest performing of the Marvel/DC films this year, but that is still probably guaranteed $100M.  I'm not sure about Girl on the Train.  I know Gone Girl did $167 M and this might do as well or better, but I just don't have a feel for it, and The Accountant seems to me to be aimed at about the same audience and is opening at the same time.  I'd put it in bold too.  So I guess there are still enough possibilities to break the record, but imho not enough 'pretty sure's.'

You forgot Conjuring 2. Allied, Sully, Deepwater Horizon, Inferno & Jack Reacher 2 may hit $100M. Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk & Birth of a Nation are so hyped, it may piqued interest beyond its demographics & target audience. Assassin's Creed should hit $100M confidently helped by the presence of built-in audience & those superb trailers. I agree with most of your list with the exception of La La Land & Space Between US. The last is the least likely to hit 100.
