It was pretty fun when Star Wars opened and we had new members joining and everyone was talking about what Star Wars meant to them and being generally pleasant.

And then the Star Wars talk starts to die down a few weeks later and you reach the point where those same new members are calling The Danish Girl "The Danish Transexual", and you just want the run to end so they go away

People were talking about Star Wars when Star Wars opened? All I seem to remember is pages upon pages of people taking a dump on Avatar

Expecting around 140m total for Revenant with this opening.

Yes it will need ~3.6x to do 140m. I think it could happen due to the awards and nominations it is getting. Has a 135m budget + PA so needs a strong dom finish.

No, I don't like films aimed at women. At all. I don't watch crap like 50 Shades of Grey or Magic Mike and I'm not interested in love stories. I don't mind a love story in the context of a bigger better film. Not at all! It can be great. But that means like Casablanca not a crappy movie like Titanic with piss poor dialogue, 2D stereotypical characters, and a "love story" where the two just met and where the epic event of the sinking of the Titanic isn't enough. No, we need a poorly told lust story complete with a "bad evil rich guy" to make it compelling. Frankly Cameron and his anti-conservative ideals can kiss my ass. I'm sick of his liberal Hollywood bullshit. Stick to what you're good at and make more Terminator movies or action films. His political ideas suck.

PS: Even my girlfriend hates Titanic. It's cheesy melodrama. Girls with good taste don't like that crap. They watch quality movies. Just like guys with good taste don't just like any stupid action film but enjoy something that at least has some style.

yikes

Hahaha the idea of Titanic, a cheesy chick flick with an awful story, being better than anything up there is laughable. Almost as laughable as JW being better than TFA. Get real! One is a fun, dumb blockbuster that's entertaining enough but it's Dino mayhem that's it. The other is a great new entry to the best film franchise ever created. Really not close.

Then again having to read about how Hateful Eight and Carol will duke it out for awards I feel like I'm living in an alternate reality. Those two movies SUCKED badly. Zero star fucking trash. Right there with The Danish Boy as I call it. And barely above that absolute F level shit is Room and Joy, not without merit but still awards bait bullshit. Let's discuss real movies that real people want to see like The Big Short that's a great movie not total bullcrap that struggles to make any money because even your average moviegoer isn't stupid enough to waste their money seeing it.

While the last few years have had some terrible movies, 2015 takes the cake. Almost every "awards film" is so insufferably awful that it would take an entire bottle of hard alcohol to make it through without wanting to kill yourself. How anyone can like that trash, I won't ever know. But it sure makes me feel good 99.9% of people will never have to suffer through it like I did.

double yikes

LOL, no, I've been with my gf for nearly 4.5 years now, and thankfully she has very good taste in film, which means she HATES movies like Pitch Perfect even more than I do. She actually hates that crap, same with Titanic. I actually at least thought Titanic had merit for the historical elements alone, i.e. great production design, great costumes, etc. She wasn't even interested in that, just thought it sucked. We were both bored by how long the film drags on and on and on. I love James Cameron as a filmmaker, but that's his worst film by far. Not every girl has obnoxious girly taste in film. My GF was at a sleepover when her friends started playing Magic Mike and she actually left to come home. She decided better to sleep in our bed than suffer through some girl porn.

I WISH these threads were just about the numbers, but instead it's pages upon pages of how great Weinstein is about promoting stinkers like Carol or Hateful Eight or whatever. I think sticking to the topic is fantastic, but when I see people mentioning some of the worst movies I've ever seen crapped onto a DVD then I can't really just sit there and not say anything. I had to suffer through them, now I'm going to make sure whenever Carol or The Danish Transexual are mentioned, I'm going to let everyone know to AVOID. The vast majority of people would hate both of those movies, which is why they sucked at the box office. If they were films that people would enjoy, they'd have been promoted.

Enough of that, though, nice to see Rth check in and it'd be great if TFA hits $42M for the weekend, after that rough Friday. When I first saw Deadline mention $37-39M and losing to The Revenant I was definitely bummed out. But the declines for Saturday and Sunday from last week are pretty solid, it's only that Friday number that was so brutal also because last Friday was a holiday. It makes sense it was going to be tough to pull off a 40% weekend decline with that Friday not being a holiday. Still, hopefully it's a good week ahead, anyway.

this is disgusting lol triple yikes

LOL, well I agree with both. And I love pink -- on girls. It's my favorite. But I wouldn't be caught dead wearing anything pink. I don't know any guy who would except guys 70 and over. Like my dad has a pink sweater, but when you drive a Ferrari, you can get away with just about anything.

this boy's masculinity is so fragile

Nope, mods then said in such a case a short info post in the daylies is o.K..

I already started a thread in the Real World sub-forum, where such kind of themes belong to speak about.

Ha was an actor too, had a few ~ pop-culture making scenes as such...

(he has 'only' 452 soundtrack listings a IMDb - yet, 38 as an actor, 6 as a composer, and a couple of others)

Yes, because I was definitely not joking?

There was no ;) or ... and a gif I'd interpret as 'it's too much ... like after all the off-topic posts about awards)

As much shorter a post is as less chance I have recognising not seriously meant posts.

And me personally would never ever use the newly arrived report of a death for any joke anyway, so directly said: I had no idea it could even be seen as joking

more meant to show that cultural differences might hinder the meant intention, hence the reason I love such smileys, they help IMHO a great deal to avoid misunderstandings.

I had no idea he even said something in general, but even me have learned via explanations and quotes in thos very thread that that what you assume seems to be a tad bit wrong. maybe you should read up the whole conversation, with an open ear, prepared for the possibility of another meaning?

Could you guys explain this whole limited release thing ?

I was watching Carol numbers and it stayed in 16 theaters for 35 days !!! Before it was pushed to 180 theaters on the 36th day then 525 on the 50th !

Then I watched "I Origins" numbers and it never made it passed 122 theaters and it was never released internationnaly.

Why spend so much time and money on a movie to make a fake half release like that ? I don't understand.

What about Monsters (2010) what are these numbers ? Was it even released in the theaters ?

Cost.  Wide releases usually need to be propped up with a lot of marketing $$.   A low or mid sized budgeted film will still cost 10s of millions to market when it goes wide, and it can often cost as much or more than the film cost to make.   If a movie starts out in only a few markets they only have to pay to market it there at first and they can hope to build momentum via critical reviews (far more important in limited vs wide release) and word of mouth which will lead to a wider roll out or maybe just better numbers soon after on VOD, Streaming etc.

The reason so many award caliber (or wannabe) dramas now released at the end of the year is nor only because the voting bodies have amnesia when it concerns early releases because they hope that the buzz from Awards, nominations or wins will generate more WOM.  It's why we then see large expansions after Oscar nominations.   If Carol get a Best Picture, Best Actress etc nom it's screen count will jump to a 1,000+
