I imagine a lot of people who are going to see Hail, Caesar! are doing so based entirely on the cast (I mean c'mon, who wouldn't say yes after reading that list of big names?) and expecting something much different than a quirky Coen Bros. 50s Hollywood farce.

That doesn't excuse the fact it has a lower CinemaScore than Fifty Shades of Black and Norm of the North.

Yes it does. Those films were more likely to meet the expectations of the viewer. The kind of person who saw the trailers for those films and said " I want to see that" likely left satisfied.

3RD UPDATE, 11:15PM: As much as distributors would love to blame Super Bowl for the sluggish weekend, it’s really about the lackluster offerings with two of the three entries — Lionsgate’s The Choice and Screen Gems’ Pride and Prejudice and Zombies — charting well below their estimates respectively with $5.5M and $5.2M and Universal’s Hail, Caesar! getting lambasted by audiences with both a C- CinemaScore and a lowly 66% ComScore PostTrak. Super Bowl weekend has shown that even the most male-heavy of titles such as American Sniper last year ($30.7M) and 2009’s Taken ($24.7M opening) can appeal to a wide audience. It doesn’t always have to be about counter-programming with under 25 and female flicks. What’s also slowing down this weekend’s turnstiles is that the masses are saving their money to blow at the B.O. next weekend when it’s a double whammy with Valentine’s Day and the Presidents’ Day four-day holiday.  That’s when 20th Century Fox will unleash its R-rated superhero Deadpool which is quite hot in tracking.

Congrats to SW7, hitting 900M plus a strong weekend hold. It should be able to leg it's way to 930M+.

How was it bad? I thought it was pretty decent.

While it was admittedly funny (Deniro and Efron were great) none of the actual jokes themselves have any intelligence to them. I kinda expected every joke and every punchline before they hit, and while their delivery by the actors was good, it was pretty much just "easy jokes".

In a way, I'd compare it to kids laughing in their grade 6 sex Ed class every time the teacher says the word penis. Like, yea, it's funny (for the audience) but there really isn't anything of substance you're laughing at. Just my take, but I'm glad you enjoyed the film as a whole :)

That Jane Got a Gun drop :kitschjob:

Also, I saw PPZ tonight. Not awful at all, but it did get held back quite a bit. Lily James was  as expected, and the first half hour are a solid 7.5/10, but the second/first half of third act really detract from the movie. It basically becomes a sloppy version of Pride & Prejudice.

lol that's a joke number for Panda.

Down 50% off a $40m OW, SuperBowl or not, is shameful.

It's a shame it had good reviews. If it had 0% RT like Norm  it would've held -40%
