Stephen Chow’s comedy The Mermaid dominated Asian box office charts again this weekend taking in $58.6 million included $55.8 million in China. The Mermaid has grossed $419.4 million in just two weeks of release in China and is now the highest grossing movie of all-time there. Other top territories for the wacky eco-friendly rom-com are Malaysia ($5.8M), Vietnam ($3.3M), and Singapore ($2.3M). 

 

In the US, it opened with an estimated $1.02M this weekend from 35 locations

Forbes reports that it reached $501.7m in China $2.5M in the US, but still can't find updated figures for the rest of the world.

Since its made nearly all its money in China, there isn't much to talk about in the OS thread, considering there's already a separate sub-forum for China. There is (was, actually, its Zootopia's incredible WOM driven and Ip Man 3's annoyingly fudged up runs that are dominating it now) lots of excitement there, you should check it out.

The Mermaid is the first one to gross $500M in China…I am afraid no HLW movie could earn this number in North America this year...

Surprise! Mermaid has its own thread here. Wonder will any film in NA top it? CW is the biggest movie now and it has just grossed $400M, still $100M+ lower than Mermaid.
