'Zootopia' Set to Threepeat as 'Allegiant' & 'Miracles from Heaven' Hit Theaters

by Brad Brevet

March 17, 2016

While Zootopia prepares for its third straight week atop the weekend box office, a fresh batch of new releases are hoping to stake their own claim among the top ten. Among said new releases we have The Divergent Series: Allegiant, Miracles from Heaven, which debuted in second place on Wednesday, and Sony Classics' R-rated gymnast comedy The Bronze.

For the third week in a row we'll start with Disney's Zootopia, which dropped only 31.6% last weekend and only 30% if you don't include the $1.7 million it took in from advanced preview screenings. More impressive is the fact the film actually performed significantly better over this past Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday than it did the week prior, as it is now just shy of $160 million domestically in 13 days of release. That said, it's adding another 132 theaters this weekend (3,959 in total) and a drop anywhere from 23-31% seems most likely for a third weekend haul anywhere from $35-39.5 million.

Discount theater expansion - normal for it's 13th w/e though that's an abnormally high number of theaters.

It has 41 theaters right now though, this is very unusual for a dollar theater expansion

This article makes me laugh  http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-et-ct-movie-projector-allegiant-zootopia-20160317-story.html

"Allegiant," starring Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller, may gross $40 million to $45 million Friday through Sunday in the U.S. and Canada, according to people who have reviewed pre-release audience surveys. More conservative estimates project an opening of $30 million to $40 million.

"Zootopia" should continue its impressive box-office run, adding about $25 million to its menagerie this weekend. Disney's well-reviewed computer-animated offering has already posted about $155 million in domestic ticket sales, and held the top spot on the charts for two straight weekends. It has also done robust business internationally, with $311 million overseas for a global total of $466 million in box-office receipts.

WTF? $25 million. Why would Zootopia fall 50%? And after adding 132 theaters and coming off of great daily holds. I just can't take it seriously. And I don't see how Allegiant can crack $40 million, let alone $45 million, without 3D.

If Zootopia and Allegiant are trending the same ITO weekend presales (as per Fandango) then that's a clear indicator that Zootopia will be going higher  given its a holdover.  I think >35M 3rd weekend is more likely than <35M.

Those numbers were definitely flipped!
