Ultimately its audience reception that matters. Critics can say whatever they want (as @Jamiem pointed with 2 best examples), and hence my whole rant, stop feeding these guys. Let the audience/fans be first one to watch the movies, reviewers can watch just like all us do and then review (like it happens in India, and that is awesome).

Studio spend on screenings, give them gifts, boost their egos, for nothing. Sure arty and niche films can get help from these, not the films which already have audiences.

Its sad that we don't have a audience score metric in America as precise and accurate as Maoyan in China or CGV egg in Korea.

PS. The above has nothing to do with any of review of BW, good or bad. Its what I generally feel about studios going out to show their content to certain 100 people, which is waste.

In all serious I don't know why people are getting so worked up about reviews, there are plenty of poorly reviewed movies I like and plenty of well reviewed movies I dislike.

I also doubt that reviews have a major impact on box office in the modern day, fan reception is much more important, Greatest Showman and Aladdin are two of the leggiest films in recent history and both got middling (at best) critical reviews but audiences loved them.

It’s really strange for the MCU faithful to be up in arms considering today we have FOUR movies and 5-6 shows this year. One entry not exactly firing up the world won’t bust the machine.

But hey nature is clearly healing if we’re back to overreacting to social media reacts LOL

I doesn't mean there is at least some correlation between audience and critical reception though. You point out two films, but they are exceptions here.

I mean of course there are going to be films that both audiences and critics are in agreement that they like/hate, that isn't really what I'm arguing, I'm saying if the two are in disagreement audience reception is more important.

Some more recent examples include Venom, Aquaman, Passengers, The Lion King and Bohemian Rhapsody.

On the other side of things you have the opposite who are critically well received that audiences don't like such as mother! (which I personally loved), Hail, Caesar!, Ad Astra and so on underperforming.

I mean, sure, but it's rare that there's a massive disagreement between critics and audiences for major genre films.

Hell, even some of the ones you mentioned the audience reception isn't that far off from the critical reception (Passengers specifically).

I mean critics are people only, and now a days due to internet, critics are no longer largely old men they used to be.

I will be going on loop here so will just end at that.

It really baffles me that some people lose their shit over 'elitist' critics in the context of the MCU when in reality critics are massively kind to these movies. Captain Marvel has a 79% RT for gods sake. Critics are your unwavering allies here!

So what's the consensus on the reactions? I'm seeing people melting down because they are bad... but also people melting down because they are good? :qotd:

They’re predictably pretty good. Some people seemed to just be freaking out because there were two or three reactions that weren’t keen on it. Also, the general consensus seems to be that the villain isn’t that great.

They’re good, not like super crazy amazeballs good but that would have been a weird expectation to have to begin with imo. Anybody melting down for either reason is insane.

Might be insane, but the first Marvel movie in two years? I'd be surprised if there wasn't an OTT reaction toward "Good, not Great" social media reactions (if that's what one wants to call them).

Maybe even a little concerned, actually.

Reactions are solid and reviews aren't in yet but some people act like it's already a critical flop. The opposite of ITH where some people (media, social media) acted like it was already a giant hit...til it flopped.

ITH was a critical hit though? Don't understand the comparison.

The comparison is that in both cases, movies were considered to be something (BW a critical flop, ITH a boxoffice hit) that they weren't yet. ITH was threated as a big hit before the opening weekend. Like literally all media and social media believed in 25-30M OW nonsense. Likewise, some comments here sound as if BW is already a critical flop which it absolutely isn't because there are no reviews yet.
