I dunno if there’s really much to this empirically.

But I wouldn’t mind BW going to premium access if Mulan is successful, if that helps the rest of the MCU schedule more smoothly.

The issue with Black Widow is it delays the rest of the MCU content. Now they might be scrambling, because production has been shut down for six months. So they might be willing to wait out Widow. But by delaying BW, they delay the important things like Eternals, and Eternals, in Eternals...

So I fully support them dumping it on Disney+ at this time the hype was never really there to begin with for the movie.

Mulan skipping theaters is bad enough. This would be an even bigger slap in the face to diversity at the movies.

It's not going to digital because Mulan and Black Widow star women, it's going to digital because of a fucking worldwide outbreak keeping theaters from being fully open because thousands of people are dying every day

Clearly missed the ScarJo reference.

I definitely missed that reference. It’s easy to miss because BW actually was going to be one of the banner movies for 2020 being a diverse year at the box office.

How are they going to pay the high budget and marketing costs and still make a good profit?
Disney receives absolutely nothing from porn ads on torrent download sites and I doubt they would make enough money by launching this product directly on D +.
Trolls 2 died too fast domesticaly and piracy killed any potential overseas.
Also, Trolls 2 only did "well" on VOD (only domestically) because of the quarantine and people being at home. In a normal situation and competition, it probably would have done just over half of what it did.

It still shocks me how easily manipulated by the narrative of media some persons can be. There's a reason why the only high budget movies released via VOD were family movies (they usually do better in secondary markets than the others genres), but it seems that not even releasing a high profile family movie in the middle of a quarantine is enough to a studio generate profits via VOD:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/trolls-world-tour-stars-want-pay-but-will-studio-make-any-money-1293394

Despite breaking several records during the OW, Trolls 2 may not even generate any profits at all, and this coming from a movie that is the most successful in this format, I can't even imagina how much did Scoob lose considering that it decreased 40%:

https://deadline.com/2020/06/scoob-hbo-max-release-1202962985/

There's a reason why both Warner and Uni didn't release high profiles movies via VOD after these two experiments.

we're not in normal. normal won't come soon. that's the point..

and pretty much every film will struggle to make profit no matter what.

let's see how Tenet will do in theater, and Mulan will do in D+

anyway, here is new survey saying +80% don't mind watching big films at home.

Bingo. But it seems some people just want to stick their fingers in their ears and “la la la can’t hear you” so that they can pretend the financial situation on VOD vs theatrical is somehow anything close to normal :hahaha:

If people aren't going to the movies they aren't going to risk a huge bomb.

Like, obviously it conveys that Disney would like to theatrically release it on Nov 6 if conditions are such that they think it’s a good idea financially compared to the alternatives. But we already knew that. Disney has no control over whether those conditions will actually be in place then or not. They are at the mercy of reality, just as are all the other studios.

I don't think Disney did much for Mulan beyond the release date announcements since almost the movie's entire marketing budget was spent (any displays were likely from earlier this year since theaters have been closed since this and everything else was delayed). Not a whole lot of marketing money has been spent on this yet.

Obviously everything needs to be taken one day at a time but the chances of this going to VOD in any situation are slim given that the MCU is arguably the hottest ticket in theaters these days. Soul, on the other hand...
