Box Office Mojo list it's budget as 8.5 Million.  It's made 12.3 Million after 10 Days.   The "Flop" headlines were false and agenda driven as "Birth of a Nation" is performing just fine for an independent release and these numbers should not affect it's Oscar chances at all.   So 25 Million Domestic get's it 3x's it budget.

You tried.

What part of "Fox Searchlight bought this movie at Sundance for 17 Millions dollars" doesn't seem to register for you?

Once it cleans that bar, you're free to stand on your soapbox and claims conspiracy.

What part of None of the other movies are making their budget but aren't called a "Flop" doesn't register to you?  "Accountant" didn't make it's budget this weekend, is it a flop?   It's made 12.3 Million in 10 days. You make it like it's not going to make 20+ million.  Plus it hasn't been released overseas.   The reality is the reporting on this movie's box office has been false and bias period.

Post in a thread other than the Birth of a Nation thread and talk about some other movie.

No, I just wait before jumping to conclusions. Fact is Fox didn't recoup their investments yet and 69% drop week to week as Trifle stated, won't take it far.

You have to make multiples of the total of your budget and marketing costs before you break even, since the studios get half or less of the money from ticket sales.  This cost $17.5M plus marketing costs.  Trades are assuming it needs about $50M in DOM ticket sales to break even. BOAN made under $8M its OW and had a 69% drop to its second weekend.  It isn't making anything like $50M DOM.

movie is done. reviews are good but not great. audiences pretty much rejected it. no awards. nate parker has a DTV action movie career. blip on the radar. the only noteworthy thing that'll come out of it is studios remembering to think before they throw millions at a movie at sundance next year.

I don't know were to put this, but with Detroit release maybe the controversy didn't significantly affect Birth of a nation box office after all.

Detroit

Date(click to view chart) Rank WeekendGross %Change Theaters Change / Avg. Gross-to-Date Week#
Jul 28–30 16 $350,190 - 20 - $17,510 $350,190 1
Aug 4–6 8 $7,125,601 +1,935% 3,007 +2,987 $2,370 $7,641,083 2

Birth of a Nation

Date(click to view chart) Rank WeekendGross %Change Theaters Change / Avg. Gross-to-Date Week#
Oct 7–9 6 $7,004,254 - 2,105 - $3,327 $7,004,254 1

Almost the same, but Detroit had nearly 1000 more theater and was helped by a 20 theater first weekend to create awareness,

Detroit

TOMATOMETER :84%

Average Rating: 7.6/10

Reviews Counted: 158

Fresh: 133

Rotten: 25

Birth of a nation

TOMATOMETER :72%

Average Rating: 6.7/10

Reviews Counted: 223

Fresh: 161

Rotten: 62

Detroit had the bigger director, better reviews, bigger assemble cast, bigger promotion:

National Airings: 1,589

Networks: 42

Most Spend On: NBC, ESPN

Creative Versions: 18

Est. Lifetime TV Spend: $21.63M

Studio: Annapurna Pictures

Started Airing: 06/09/17

A bit like Ghost in a Shell having not much metric demonstrating any harm done by the whitewashing (apparently less than 1-2% of the total internet traffic about that movie was about that aspect), it will stay hard to know if Birth of Nation was affected significantly (more than doing 10% less that it would have without it) by the controversy.
