GHOSTBUSTERS | 100.8 M overseas | 229.1 M worldwide

Recommended Posts

So Spain and Mexico are opening this coming weekend.

Mexico could provide good numbers.

$230M WW is terrible for a movie that cost nearer $240M with marketing. Sony are getting about $130M of that back, thats a horrible loss that merchandising isnt going make up for. In fact if sales are bad there may be penalties to pay to the licensee. These merch deals usually have performance related clauses in them.

They are in partnership with GhostCorps. They're not going to have to pay anything to the license holders . Plus, Variety say merch is selling well. Then there's home market to cover the advertising costs. You might be forgetting partnerships, sponsors and product placement too, since you're looking into this films advertising costs so much.

It hasn't flopped in every major market, look at Australia and the U.K., it was number 1 in both and over $10m each.

Those Spain and France numbers are dire.

72 million overseas is pretty much a poor performance for a movie with a budget of 144 million + 100 million spent for P&A. That's beyond pathetic.

Remember, Fantastic Four made 111 million overseas. Yeah, that horrible FF reboot made 111 million overseas and it's basically confirmed that Ghostbusters won't be making 100 million overseas, unless it makes 40 million in Japan, which we both know it won't happen. That's a disaster.

Its domestic numbers aren't the worst thing ever, but the numbers are disappointing regardless.

It doesn't need 40m in Japan to get to 100m or more overseas. That's like saying it has stopped earning money in all the other markets it has been released. It probably has more than $10m or so left in its existing markets so It still has a chance in breaking 100m. After Japan, it still has Korea which could potentially add another $5m. If it makes more than 10m in Japan then 100m is already all but assured. The movie already made $1m(estimate) in previews in Japan.

Oh, is that $1m in Japan previews a good sign?

According to Corpse, it's decent considering it was shown in very limited screenings/showings. Not sure if it's enough to indicate anything for its performance in Japan.

@Purple Minion so it made $8.1m from holdovers this week.

Last weekends gross was $6.9m.

That seems like quite a decent hold, we don't know what midweek grosses were

This weekend's OS was $7.9M, that leaves just $3.6M outside Japan ... sizeable drop from last week's $7.2M weekend.

It was $6.9m, it's a 45% drop.

From Screen Daily

Ghostbusters captured $7.9m from its 4,700 screens for $84.2m overseas, propelled by a preview-boosted $4.3m opening in Japan from 694 screens.

Mexico led the holdovers with $1.1m for $5m after two weeks in play, while it posted second weekends of $765k and $415k in France and Spain, respectively, for $2.8m and $2.2m. Paul Feig’s reboot opens in South Korea next weekend.

Its a bomb. It grosses less than cost WW, merch isn't saving it, and there is no Sequel. Enough said really.

Usually a bomb wouldn't even match its production budget worldwide.

You need to save that term for actual bombs.
