if you read interviews with the original bwp directors you'll realize they weren't actually big horror guys (ofc they've directed nothing but horror since bcos they were shoved in that box) and i think that's how they were able to create something totally unique because they didn't care what came before. adam wingard and simon barrett are obviously big horror guys and they go for every obvious play in the book here. there's only one moment where i was legitimately freaked out. and more to do with my own phobias than anything else at that. coulda put that in any movie and i'd be freaked out.

I'm disappointed because the movie could have been so much more. They do a lot of really good things in the movie but there's no pay off. It just ends up being a complete remake or rehash of the original. There were about three or four things I thought they were setting us up for and none of it materialized and the ending is just one big massive Downer. If the ending would have summed things up and if they would have done maybe two or three or four things differenrly it could have been a Fantastic film in my opinion. As it stands it's just a really big disappointment.

Me and the person I'm going with have never seen the original. Would that hurt our experience of the film or will that make her and I like it more?

I thought the first half was bland, mostly because the characters were blandly played by bland actors in a bland way (I do like the Lisa character though). Their performances lacked the compelling realism needed. But the second half was absolutely terrifying! It almost seems to be an experiment in terror, pulling out all the stops and combining elements and tactics and disorienting the viewer. Even when the camera pixelates it's in an aggressively jarring way, and some of the shots, even when blurry, seem meant to create this claustrophobic visceral blur. A similar feeling to what Wingard was going for in Pop Skull, though via different, more visceral means here. I don't expect that to work on everyone, much like the original Blair Witch didn't work for everyone, but I think that's what they were going for, and it really worked for me. I agree that the hype was blown out of proportion, but I actually agree with those initial reviews or comments from the screening in May stating how intensely scary it is. And I think the little additions to the lore were more than enough, especially when some were used to create such disorientation. As I said, for me the problem was simply the lack of compelling performers. Though, like @Baumer loves Oogieloves I did wish the film had a done a few things that it didn't that I actually expected it to do given some of the new additions to the mythology.

ok, now that i know this, I will probably like the movie more than you since I am expecting less from it now

I actually dug it. It isn't You're Next and it sure as hell isn't The Guest, but as far as found footage films go, I think it holds up better than most. Adam Wingard really directs the hell out of the movie--there's one moment about two-thirds of the way through with this extended, still close-up that was breathtaking. The acting by and large is serviceable if completely bland; Valorie Curry (who I dug in the otherwise terrible The Following) is very good, and I'd go so far as to call the female lead great. 

 

The real issue, it pains me to say, is Simon Barrett's script. It's hard to believe this is the same guy who wrote David Collins, the Peterson family, and Erin. The writing is never bad, it's just... nothing at all, usually. There were moments of self-awareness that I enjoyed but they were few and far between, as they should be in this type of film. But when they aren't there, and you're just watching the characters interact, it's just pretty trite found footage horror set-up. He clearly needs characters he can have fun with. 

 

But all in all I'd call it a good horror film and a serviceable film all-in-all. It's worth watching for Wingard's work. 

 

A caveat that I did not see the first Blair Witch, so I don't have a more original and intelligent version of the same movie to compare it to, which I have to imagine goes a long way.

The biggest thing to come out of this as it relates to box office is the overall marketing campaign.  I think it will rub a lot of people in the industry the wrong way that Lionsgate seemed to recruit friendly online critics and bloggers to give it these hyperbolic early reviews and pump up the expectations.  

 

Then when it ultimately is screened for everyone and you see the reviews go completely in the opposite direction and pretty much label it a rip off piece of garbage, that is going to make people really scrutinize limited early reviews.  

 

I thought this would happen and said it earlier in the thread that all of the word was way out of reality compared to what the movie actually was.  Now all they have done is bought themselves a lot of general public backlash and even makes a couple respected Director/Writers lose some credibility.

I actually do think that some of what they did in terms of the visceral aspects of the movie (via cinematography and sound design) as well as the enhancements of the mythology were quite smart and bold. It's all meant to disorient and I think it did its job.

A good rule for me to follow is don't get excited until one person absolutely hating the film wouldn't affect its overall reception too badly

Enjoyed it, the house scene with James was the best. Don't know why the witch was shown though. There was one scene in the woods which was so jarring and loud it was hard for me to be scared. Ultimate shaky cam mixed with ear rape, it was the scene where they all started screaming and the tent went flying.
