MEH-MORIAL DAY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE | Abandon all hope, the box office is dead. 3 day weekend #s X-Men 65M, Alice 28.1M, Angry Birds 18.7M, Civil War 15.1M, Neighbors 9.1M. Bad openings, horrible holdovers.

I remember when Marvel was essentially SpiderMan and Xmen only, every other character was just pushed aside.

If you asked 10-year old me what the most popular Marvel characters were I would have put Storm and Magneto in the top tier. Though that may be because they were so overplayed in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

Definitely not the case anymore.

When I was a kid Storm used to be the most popular black superhero and female superhero at the same time. Back when Wonder Woman was doing nothing.

Black Panther and Wonder Woman snatched back both titles. I can't believe how under-utilised the character has been in the films.

I am expecting a solid jump for Alice 2 which should make around 11M today continuing his massive floppage.

FOX should be terrified. I am expecting 20M today for Apocalypse for a 46.2M 2 days total. Just brutal. They get lucky that the Depp scandal and the Alice 2 massive bombage will overshadow this awful performance. It will go below First Class's daily numbers on Tuesday and there is no way it does 24.1M on 2nd weekend after barely making 62-64M on this inflated 3 day weekend and with the competition of TMNT2. It will end below the 146M First Class made DOM.

You think that's a "solid jump"?

I do t understand why this X-Men isn't doing better? It's one of the best films.

People don't know that unless they go see it.   I'm hoping word of mouth gives it good legs but clearly the reviews hurt it.

Next week's harsh drop due to week after Memorial day. Generally you would expect a recovery in later weeks. BVS held -40% and -30% later on but there is competition and screen loss every weekend, and more pirates downloading, reducing repeat viewing. Get ready to see old time fudge in action.

Those Pirates, beating women and screwing up BO.

I think there are limitations to brand when it comes to popularity, and that execution and how things work on the screen matter a lot. Consider that BvS had a huge opening day and a big opening weekend. Ant-Man was small scale after Ultron and Thor were about the end of the world, and it was funny. After the Nolan phenomenon and "Man of Steel", the satirical element may have been refreshing.

Some of us love McAvoy and Fassbender and were impressed with the newbies. Considering say a 75M 4-day and a 140M gross, Fox is not going to do another mainline X-Men movie with this crew, and some of us are disappointed about that.

You still don't know that. Didn't Kinberg say the next movie would be set in 90s?

Are they going to try and convince us that Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan are 29 in the next movie.

Do you not buy the mutants age slow excuse ? If that's the case how do you explain Rose Byrne ?

I could see the next film combined into Josh Boone's New Mutants.

That seems like a very bad idea. Apocalypse had way too many characters and so it got like no meaningful and satisfying arc for any character.

I'm a huge fan of the series but I really think the critics got this right.  It's the most bloated film by far and I think the script is the weakest of the series (yes, weaker than Last Stand).  That being said, it's like the Half-Blood Prince of the saga for me as overall it's one of if not my least favorite overall but has some of the best moments to date (Last 15 minutes are really something).

The series needs to really play it smart with whatever the next entry is or I could see them doing a complete reboot in the next 5-7 years (especially with Jackman out and what I'm sure will be a MUCH higher salary from Lawrence).

Perhaps, but it's been hinted that a future X-Men movie will be set in the 90s, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that New Mutants could be that movie. And if it's not the one set in the 90s, if Fox ends up underwhelmed by Apocalypse's performance, they could make Simon Kinberg and Josh Boone fuse ideas so that they can use New Mutants as a potential reboot of X-Men with a new team.

Sometimes I wonder if it's even possible to have nostalgia for that decade.

Also, Avatar was only barely released in the 00s, so I don't know if it counts.

The EXACT same thing was said about the 80s (and 90s for that matter).  Like, in the middle of the 50s nostalgia fest that took hold in the 80s people actually said that no one will ever be nostalgic for the 80s.

Yeah that prediction proved to be real accurate. :D

Turns out some people are often far too dismissive of popular entertainment of their times. The trick is to figure out what is going to stand the test of time, what will be positively re-evaluated, and what will be assigned to the ashheaps of history (Shoulder pads?  Really?? :P).

Mystique is the only one I buy. Rose Byrne is a regular lady and looks the same 20 years later.
