MEH-MORIAL DAY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE | Abandon all hope, the box office is dead. 3 day weekend #s X-Men 65M, Alice 28.1M, Angry Birds 18.7M, Civil War 15.1M, Neighbors 9.1M. Bad openings, horrible holdovers.

Also, this movie relies on tropes and material we have seen before, and reviewers hit that very hard.

All superhero movies rely on tropes and material we have seen before. Yep...even the allegedly groundbreaking Deadpool.

It's official: 2016 is all opening weekend (record shattering 1st Quarter - Deadpool, Zootopia, Jungle Book, BVS), and and no legs (lamest Summer in a long time).

Yikes at that Apocalypse number.

YIKES at that Civil War drop (its run is quite baffling to say the least).

YIKES at Alice 2, I could've foreseen under 200M a mile away, but under Tomorrowland?  Well, at least there's justice.

So true. I think one thing that was especially tough on this one was that it relied heavily on specific things we had seen before.

Spoiler

Raven running hot and cold on her 'natural form'

Spoiler

Magneto experiencing tragedy and going back and forth

The experience of it was also very familiar. Set-up, the 3rd act battle, the end of the world.

Saw this coming with CW, these movies are going directly into SH fatigue. yeah I know, DP proves me wrong but only because it managed to deliver a fresh spectacle .BvS tanked, CW was overhyped and is doing less cash than AOU, now Apocalypse is underperforming.

You thought CW going to surpass Ultron? Lol

You need to keep your expectations on check.

Superhero fatigue? Yeah, keep telling yourself that. People have been telling this since 2000's. The train will keep rolling.

I know people are trying to act like the good copy leak of civil war just 3 days into its domestic release isn't a big deal, but come on. It's definitely affected it some, it's not the difference in it makin 500 million or 400 million or anything crazy like that, but it can't be dismissed. It definitely affected repeat views, I personally know 7 people that were planning on seeing it in theaters at least once more after opening night that ended up downloading or streaming it instead. It may not be the only factor in its run being more stunted than thought, but it's definitely a factor.

I think one other thing that's worth thinking about is that these estimates keep coming in lower and the game will cut into attendance monday night, so 77 is likely higher than what will actually happen. :(

Grim22, how much do you think game 7 hurts memorial day totals? like 2m off of XM:A on Monday?

Next week's harsh drop due to week after Memorial day. Generally you would expect a recovery in later weeks. BVS held -40% and -30% later on but there is competition and screen loss every weekend, and more pirates downloading, reducing repeat viewing. Get ready to see old time fudge in action.

Those Pirates, beating women and screwing up BO.

latest?cb=20110623080236

Made changes with the new update.

Week 5(next week) has a 61% drop due the prior weeks memorial  bump.

Week 6 has a 45% hold with summer days kicking in.

Even with 45% holds after week 7, July 4th bump and dollar theaters 395m is were it lands.

It won't be able to do an IMAX expansion with the summer schedule packed. Labor day will be too late. Double feature and drive ins a la spectre could help but 5m is a big fudge number.

Its disappointing that X-men is getting rejected, its a solid entry, does not deserve the hate from the critics, even Iron Man 2,3 and Ultron got a big pass from critics

That's because they were all MUCH better than apocalypse, well except IM 3 that is . Ultron is citizen Kane compared to apocalypse .

You're hilarious.  Apocalypse was a good flick.  Ultron was kind of shit.  Not sure why you hate Apocalypse so much.

I have written the reasons in another thread . I am hilarious, the critics are hilarious, the GA is hilarious and only the marvel studios Haters in this forum are correct .

Apocalypse is getting exactly what it deserves . The x- men franchise had a great chance for a reboot with FC and they blew it .

And the cinemascore is A-.

Look, you are entitled to your opinion.  You can hate it.  I disagree and I think a lot of others do as well.  It was entertaining fluff and it did a lot of things right....imo.

How am I entitled to my opinion when the response is a personal insult ? Cinemascores? Let's see its legs then ....

oh and the Xmen franchise has a ton of potential in the right hands, they are a listers even though you wouldn't be able to tell that based on the fox men movies .

They didn't blow shit in the wake of First Class. Regardless of Apocalypse sucking or not (I don't know since I haven't seen it), we got Days Of Future Past, one of the greatest SH movies ever made, and one that corrected the wrongs of Last Stand and Origins: Wolveshit. Even if Apocalypse is a disappointment, it cannot be as bad as the latter or miss the mark as much as the former, so all is forgiven for me.
