Alice floppage = TMNT2 IMAX release

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is getting a 1 week IMAX release    RazorHawk on May 31, 12:10

The Michael Bay-produced live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel hits theaters this week, and the early reviews say the film is better than the previous movie, if by just a little. Seems like Paramount Pictures might believe they have a box office hit on their hands, and today have announced that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows will be released in domestic IMAX Theaters for a one week special engagement beginning on Thursday June 2nd 2016 at 5pm.

IMAX dropped it like it's flop.

Not surprised. When I looked at some IMAX screens for Alice 2, only 8-15% of the seats were filled.

According to Deadline, Alice 2 earned 11% in IMAX which is around 3.8M for the 4 day. IMAX tickets cost 15-20$ at their cheapest and more in 3D. Even taking 15$, that means 260000 people saw it in IMAX over the weekend in the 450 (or more) IMAX theaters.

Average attendance of 600 people per IMAX screen for the entire 4 days, 150 per day, less than 50 per show. That is pretty horrible.

How do IMAX screenings work? Who decides which films are available for the branded screens?

Not sure if you're being sarcastic.

Are you serious lol? First it opened with 80M on the four day and it is a fanboy driven movie. Those always sell super well on IMAX. It would have greatly helped it.

It sold out the PLF shows, the same audience going to PLF would definitely prefer IMAX if available. Would have probably made a 5-7M difference in the end for sure.

@CJohn what do you consider a "fanboy driven movie"?

Really? If it makes any confusion just take that out.

It is a big scale action movie that just opened with 80M on a 4 day weekend. It would have made a ton fuck of money in IMAX.

Not all people who watched in PLF would have been willing to pay extra $$$ for IMAX. Furthermore, not all people who watched in regular 3D would have been willing to make the jump to PLF even though tickets had been available (IMAX availability would open up extra space for PLF)

Releasing in IMAX would have been good marketing push for Apocalypse, but I doubt that would have resulted in noticeably more people watching the movie.

Nobody is saying that lol.

But several of the people who watched it in PLF or even normal 2D would have seen it in IMAX and that would mean more money. Apocalypse was a hit in the IMAX format OS. it sold out tons and tons of shows in the format here.

How exactly does it work? Is IMAX choosing the films on its own or is it forced to show certain films by contract? It would sort of annoy me if Disney strong armed IMAX to show Alice2.

The discussion probably went like "You want Star Wars and Marvel movies? Then show Alice in IMAX goddamit!".

IMAX has contracts with WB and Disney covering almost all of their movies. So most WB and Disney movies will get an IMAX release, exceptions are when a WB or Disney movie releases close to another, like Tarzan getting IMAX over BFG and Suicide Squad over Pete's Dragon.

While Disney didn't exactly strong arm IMAX to release Alice over Apocalypse, the understanding is pretty clear - Alice is the price you pay to get Avengers and Star Wars on your IMAX screen in the same way Tarzan is the price you pay to get DC and Fantastic Beasts on your screen.

They should have CIVIL WAR and X-MEN share IMAX Screens.. Both would benefit since CIVIL WAR deserves the IMAX Treatment..

Civil war been out for month no body would be seeing it in IMAX anymore.
