Oh hey turns out Saudi Arabia actually did allow movie theaters after all. In 2018 though.

Its all PR. The main Hollywood interest in Saudi Arabia is to have Saudi money flow into movies as investment. SA is never going to be a significant movie market because it has a relatively small population and they are also very conservative. There just isn't going to be a lot of demand for Hollywood movies there.

33 million people is nothing to sneeze at. And if they can get even just one movie in the market, it could be a good money maker.

But that says nothing about the ethics of doing business in Saudi Arabia.

Projections point to a $ 1.5 billion market by 2030!

With only eight theaters in the country, SA is already the third largest market in the Middle East.

Saudi cinephiles are hungry for movies! You can't ignore a $ 1.5 billion market!

Assuming, of course, that Saudi Arabia's definition of family-friendly is similar to ours. I can see the clerics that got cinemas banned in the first place going completely apeshit over a film like Zootopia, or even Frozen.

I heard a secondhand story of a mother who was offended at Judy's tight uniform.

Quote

That relationship between Saudi Arabia and Hollywood was threatened in October when journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by agents of the Saudi government. The CIA later concluded that Bin Salman had ordered his assassination. Against this backdrop, talk of Saudi Arabia was more muted at this year’s CinemaCon. AMC chief Adam Aron said the company had been shaken by Khashoggi’s murder, but ultimately decided to move forward with plans to build as many as 40 theaters in the country.

“It caused us to think and think hard about what was the right thing to do,” Aron told Variety. “And after a lot of thought we concluded that we’re there in that country for the benefit of the people. There are 33 million people in that country, 70% of whom are under the age of 30 and they like movies.”
