Interesting fact before I get my analysis up:

Fast and Furious 8: OS - China: 616m

DM3: OS - China: 600m so far and counting. May beat FF8 OS-C!

If we make the all time OS-China list we can obtain extremely different results

Here’s my weekly analysis:

Excluding China, DM3 is now at almost 600m OS (+150 in China). In comparison, Fast and Furious 8 scored 616m by the end of its run OS minus China. DM3 can end up matching or exceeding Fast 8 overseas excluding China.

It is now only 2.1% behind Minions at the exact point in release, in the same markets and without even factoring in ER which was in Minions’ favor.

Overseas Results:

Minions: $764.36 million OS so far

(in exact same point of release as DM3 is now. This figure is in 2015 exchange rate and not adjusted to 2017 ER)

DM3$748.3 million OS so far (2 % below Minions OS total at the same point in run)

(latest figure after studio actuals came in. This figure in exact same point of release as Minions. Figures are in 2017 ER and not adjusted to match 2015 ER of Minions)

*Above grosses calculated as per numbers available on Box Office Mojo.

Mathematically most likely case based on DM3 vs Minions comps: Using Peludo’s 779m adjusted total for Minions, DM3 can then end up with 98% x 779 = 763m OS. Combined with around 264 domestic, that gives us: 264 + 763 = 1,027 Billion WW.

Worst case: if the film drops 50% week-on-week every week from now on, it gets to 1,022 Billion WW.

Realistic case: So far, the film has been dropping around 40% drop on average every week. If it keeps this pace, this gives it around 1,026 Billion WW.

Isn't the number better than the normal 40% drop this has been having?

If it increases (as it always does with actuals), it will be around a -37% or -38% drop. Around the same drop every weekend (which in itself is a great drop on any weekend of course).

If it keeps that pace, it should land around 1.025B or a bit more (maybe 1.030B

Japan is having a holiday starting Sunday, so it will get a boost there (its run there is simply incredible, one of the best runs along with China).

DEADLINE write-up is here

Illumination/Universal’s animated hit keeps on going, adding another $4.2M in 44 markets this session. That takes the overseas total to $753.8M and the global kitty to $1.015B. Italy was the top holdover this session with a total of $20M after four weekends, and Japan, where it was No. 3 in the 9th frame, is now at $63M. DM3 is the No. 6 animated movie ever at the worldwide box office. To top the No. 5 movie, Zootopia, it would need another $8.8M.

If it made $63.2M in Japan and $61.1M in the UK, then Japan is a distant second and not the UK.
