DESPICABLE ME III | 770.2 M overseas ● 1034.8 M worldwide

Recommended Posts

Great news from Corpse (Japan box office expert)!

Despicable Me 3 should have faded some by now, but the lack of any family or children fare at the market at the moment is giving it a late boost as it managed an increase in its ninth weekend of release. It exceeded ¥7 billion on Monday (yesterday), setting another record by becoming the only non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film to ever reach the milestone. I also misreported the films' admissions last weekend in the Chart Updates, but that'll be corrected this week.

DM3 is also now #82 all time in Japan and #18 animated film of ALL TIME in Japan!

CARTOON BREW

Speaking of animation franchises, there’s at least one company that has figured out how to consistently entertain global audiences. Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 added $2.9M to its global take this weekend, lifting its worldwide total to nearly $1.02 billion.

DM3 is now just $4M shy of overtaking Zootopia to become the 5th highest-grossing animated feature of all time.

A couple countries in particular on the tail end of DM3s release schedule – Japan and Italy – have overperformed and driven the film’s continued strong performance at the global box office. In both countries, DM3 is the 2nd highest-grossing film to date of 2017, with over $64M in Japan and over $20M in Italy.

Earlier today I ran an interesting showdown to compare how similar the Despicable Me franchise is to the Fast and Furious franchise, two franchises with consecutive 1-billion grossing films in 2015 and 2017.

And the results are in, with the Despicable Me franchise boasting a better retention rate from Minions to DM3 than FF8 to FF7:

DM vs FF Showdown:

FAST AND FURIOUS FRANCHISE

FF8: 1,238,000,000 WW with 225m DOM and 1,010,000,000 OS. (OS-China: 622.6m)

FF7: 1,516,000,000 WW with 353m DOM and 1,163,000,000 OS (OS-China: 773m)

FF8 retention rate to FF7:

DOM retention rate: 63.7%

OS retention rate: 86.8%

OS-China retention rate: 80.54% *exactly identical to DM3!**

WW retention rate: 81.6%

DESPICABLE ME FRANCHISE

DM3: 1,022,000,000 WW with 262m DOM and 760m OS (OS-China: 607.7m)

Minions: 1,159,000,000 WW with 336m DOM and 823m OS (OS-China: 754.5m)

DM3 retention rate to Minions:

DOM retention rate: 78%

OS retention rate: 92.3%

OS-China retention rate: 80.54% *exactly identical to FF8!*

WW retention rate: 88.1%

Winner of this showdown: Despicable Me Franchise.
