It's nutty that we're now halfway through the year and only 9 movies have made $100M+. 6 $330M+ grossers and 3 other movies between $105M and $153M. Granted that list will soon grow but still. This is the year where "feast or famine" has come fully alive.

Do the goal posts change every time XA makes money? Previously it was $100K, then $150K, but when XA crosses that, it goes up to precisely what it would take to beat it.  Except XA is above $153,000,000.  Sorry.

$153,537,455 with $528,954,059 worldwide.  So you included it in your 'other movies', right?

Given that so much of a breakout smash's potential comes down to intangible factors (seriously, how else do we explain Jurassic World's performance?), it's an inexact science. That being said, more direct callbacks to the original film wouldn't have hurt. The ad campaign had little outside of the edited clips of President Pullman's speech, and the film itself had a few very half-hearted nods surrounded by poor attempts to get audiences invested in the characters of the next generation. I guess it's a case of the film not providing much for the marketers, but one would think that the studio bean-counters would have had enough influence over a financially-driven tentpole to force more nostalgic moments to use in the advertising.

As bad as the film is, I kinda feel bad for Emmerich. Bombing with a big sequel after bombing with a highly-budgeted non-sequel can't be good for his resume, which saddens me considering that I have such a soft spot for most of his dopey cinematic destruction.

I agree with you, but those are all creative decisions.

Perhaps I'm way more cynical than I should be, but I approach analyzing the quality of a film that has failed as greatly on artistic and financial levels as IDR under the (admittedly faulty) assumption that there wasn't any creativity invested in it at any point in its existence. ;)

Emmerich got a better resume than Zack Snyder even after this IDR flop, so if Snyder is getting his job, Emmerich won't be losing his.

I'm pretty sure everyone has chalked up Snyder's continued bankrolling at WB to the fact that he probably has some really incriminating things on the most powerful people at the studio at this point. ;)

It's fun to look at the release schedule from old summers.

25 years ago on the Fourth of July weekend: T2 opened, along with another sequel, PROBLEM CHILD 2. The top grosser of the year (to date) was SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, still pulling in almost 500k for the weekend, in its 21st week of release. ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES was about to cross 100m -- it reached $97m after this weekend. CITY SLICKERS was still going strong, and BACKDRAFT (which had opened over the Memorial Day weekend -- the start of the summer, back then) was still solid as well.

The rest of the top ten for the year was WHAT ABOUT BOB?, NAKED GUN 2½, THELMA AND LOUISE, THE ROCKETEER, and SOAPDISH.

Next week, three more major releases (BOYZ N THE HOOD, POINT BREAK, and REGARDING HENRY) along with a major re-release of 101 DALMATIANS.

It's pretty crazy how early in the year Lambs released.

Why are you talking about 1991? I wasn't even born then.

Freak.

As if you didn't already feel old enough, just remember that kids born between 2001 and 2002 (!) will begin to attend high school in the fall.

There are kids born in the 21'st century who are driving. I was born 10 months before the 21'st century and I'm of (legal) drinking age in 18 months.

"Oh yea, 1997, 3 years ago"

"uh no, more like 19 freaking years ago"

Completely OT but what the hell is Loki doing running around the beach with a I<3T.S. shirt on? Like do his pr people hate him or something? There can't be any other explanation.

He's just a temporary distraction. We're all waiting for Lesbian Swift to introduce herself to the world, it's only a matter of time.
