Star Trek Beyond and Ghostbusters box office: What Went Wrong

And if Ghostbusters was well liked it would have done that since it is a comedy and should be audience friendly. Instead it had over 50% drops in every week of release. Not good in any shape or form

You are aware that it saw sizeable theater drops each week after the second weekend due to screens being consumed by new movies, right? Its PTA dropped less than 40% in its third weekend as it lost nearly 1/4 of its theaters.

Third and fourth week still had more than enough theaters for people who had interest in it to find it

Fourth week pretty much hurt everything (except Bad Moms and Pets) due to Suicide Squad eating up so much attention.

I am not sure what is the problem to admit the WOM of GB was ok but nothing special.

There's nothing wrong with it at all. Just some people are acting like it had such putrid legs when it really didn't (its big drops could be chalked up more to theaters forcing it out to make way for the plethora of movies that arrived each week, especially when the PTA drops have been extremely light). You'd think it was Batman v Superman.

Both Ghostbusters and Star Trek were underperformers. Not flops. A flop is Ben-Hur.

Yeah, but they are both going to lose money. unless Star Trek goes bonkers in China at least.

Basically the worst of both worlds. Spy actually will end up with a higher OS take than GB surprisingly enough.

That is simply not a surprise because Spy had a different marketing approach OS.

Spy here was sold as a Jason Statham action comedy. Look at the TV spot they used lol:

It is by far her biggest hit here because it wasn't sold like a MM comedy vehicle.

So basically, Jason Statham > Chris Hemsworth in OS markets

At least in Portugal, sure lol. Mechanic 2 is doing blockbuster business here this weekend.

Statham is definitely a draw OS. One of the bigger ones, and even one of the biggest in some territories.

Statham and Dwayne are fucking huge here. Central Intelligence is the only Kevin Hart comedy to sell over 105000 tickets here. All the others sold like 30000 at most. Dwayne. His power.

Maybe there is confusion to how we use the terms. For me a flop is a movie losing serious money at the box office. A "bomb" is something so catastrophical one can't see any potential of regaining the investment over a decade.

Ghostbusters and Star Trek are both flops by that definition. The box office of Ghostbusters apparently made the studio cancel plans of a live action sequel. I have yet to hear one word of NuTrek IV after the initial drop hit.
